A film that everyone should be excited for is Lars von Trier's Antichrist, a very interesting project that is set to make its debut at the forthcoming Cannes market. Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the English language pic is set in nature and based on the theory that it was Satan, not God, who created the world. In the psychological thriller that evolves into a horror film, Dafoe and Gainsbourg will play a couple who retreat to an isolated cabin in the woods following the death of their child. The first official image was posted online (albeit a bit cropped) and can be viewed inside.

Willem Defoe is always good for strange roles. This should be a classic in the making.

using religion in horror films is a pretty desperate and cheesy idea, it's something personal and something everybody has different opinions about, which is why it's better left untouched, but oh well, idiots will always get to make movies and idiots will always watch something stupid like this, but theres always a dumb audience who actually think an idea of satan creating the world and not God is a good idea...ugh

OMG!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH PROTECIOUS!!!!! I FREAKING LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! I really like horror movies, but I do have a strong faith in God.

Is it ok to use religion in non-horror movies, say comedy for example? Religion based horror films are often the most effective, in my opinion. It's not gospel, just entertainment. Having some degree of faith can intensify the experience in horror flicks that deal with religioius elements, 'The Exorcist' being the best example of course. But if a movie can shatter one's faith in God, then there couldn't have been much real faith there to begin with.

Hey Pretentious, why do you go on every thread just to call people 'idiots?' Lighten up, for Fuck's sake!

That's a pretty creepy looking pic I might add.

phuck the religion. why is it that religious people are always full of hatred towards everyone who dares to think different to what the 'good book' says... "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" btw. the movie looks like fun :)

What will people do when Atheists take over and reason returns? There is no magical space daddy sitting on a cloud watching over your life that you will teleport to when this mortal coil is shed. The chance of some horned , pitchfork carrying douchebag that wants to make your afterlife miserable in a hot pit of despair doesn't sound all that real to us folks who moved past fairy tales as a kid. Religion doesn't scare me. Just the unfortunate people who believe in it. THOSE people scare me.

I can't wait, sounds like The Fountain through a Crowley opium dream. More evidence of right wing influence on cinema, I see. lulz

Religion is always something that will be debated in books and movies, because it is supernatural it lends its self to the horror genre very well....But forgive my girlishness for one moment as I say "I want to see more of Willem Defoe's tush, why is the picture cropped gosh darn it"?

Pretentious your the idiot, to not make a movie because some people find it to be "personal" is ridiculous. Some people find a lot of horror movies to be "personal" such as for example movies that are based on true events, does that mean that the rest of us can't get the pleasure of watching a kick ass movie all because some dumb ass doesn't want it to be made??? Here's a brilliant idea.......DON'T WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!. I may not be religious but fuck man, get over it, its just a movie!

Hey, blackchristmas777: Your little 12-year-old-fangirl scream of "OMG!!!!!!!" is taking your lord's name in vain, so your faith in God ain't that fuckin' strong, you hypocrite. And Protecious (pretentious, heh), until the goddamned United States constitution tells me otherwise, God's as fair game in art as Satan is, and it's all well protected from people (dare I say, hypocrites) like you.

Sound like an interesting premise. Interesting how freedom of expression is tossed aside when it conflicts with someone else's beliefs. Not everyone agrees as to the validity of christian precepts. I certainly can't accept the notion that someone is an "idiot" because his art touches upon a controversial subject. As others have observed, it is just a movie. Lighten up, and don't be so quick to judge. I thought only god had the wisdom to do that.

True so this just made it into my top 5 most anticipated films this year...I hope it plays at toronto film fest in september.

Protecious i disagree. I think putting religion in a horror movie can really fuck with people's heads and scare the shit out of them (The Exorcist anyone?)

ZombiePaul

Do the people who are knocking this for using religion as a topic and calling it desperate and cheesy think that Dante's Inferno (The Literature, not the films) is lame as well?

Fantasm

Surely such films like The Exorcist, Se7en, Poltergeist and Hellraiser, which all use religious iconography to some degree haven proven to us that Religion can be used within the horror genre? This isn't a means to tread on your faith, that's personal to you and you alone but you can't say it shouldn't be used for horror considering most biblical texts have horror within them, albeit to put the 'Fear of God' into you. ;)

I think using religion is highly effective tool for amping up the terror in a horror film. I'm Roman Catholic myself, and the scariest movie I've ever seen is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It's the only movie that gives me nightmares anymore. Why? Because I believe that those types of things do happen, and it's utterly terrifying to me. And, I agree with Undeath; if you can't watch a movie like this or a movie like Stigmata and not keep your faith, there wasn't much there to begin with.

Oh, and, also, this movie looks like it's going to be awesome. The concept itself will make for a very surreal and different experience, and Willem Dafoe is seriously one of the best actors out there, especially in strange or odd roles.

Rollstuhlwolf- Totally agree with everything you just said. This movie looks/sounds promising...I tend to find movies with a religious theme to be some of the most terrifying so this concept sounds pretty good. Willem Dafoe is also an awesome actor. Does anybody know when the film is set to be released?
