Richard Kelly's 'The Box' Gets Halloween Release

Some good news comes in from Warner Bros. this evening as they've officially moved UP the release of Richard Kelly's The Box from its November date to a solid October 30th, 2009 Halloween release. Why they'd take on Saw VI in its second week of release is beyond me, but it's still nice to have something creepy arriving in theaters on our holiday. The Box is based upon the short story "Button, Button" by Richard Matheson, which was also an incredibly creepy episode of "The Twilight Zone".

Norma and Arthur Lewis are a suburban couple with a young child who receive an anonymous gift bearing fatal and irrevocable consequences. A simple wooden box, it promises to deliver its owner $1 million with the press of a button. However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world...someone they don't know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the crosshairs of a startling moral dilemma and face the true nature of their humanity.

FUCK SAW 20 or whatever part they are on. i'm SICK of every movie being "so afraid" to compete with SAW 40. some of us would LOVE to go see (around Halloween time) a movie option OTHER than SAW. i welcome this movie!!

I totally agree - this sounds great. It'll be creepy!!! I'm soooo done with the Saw franchise.

..well they tried The Haunting of Holly Martley.. or was it Molly Hartley? I can't remember since it BOMBED... I dunno, I think they should just wait for Saw to die down, since it obviously will. Just think, Saw it to the 2000's as what Friday the 13th was to the '80s, lol. Only I like Friday the 13th better, haha.

Well this is quite the moral dilemma. Would you press the button?

And what about Trick R Treat also set up at WB? Guess it'll be going straight to DVD then...

Already seen this on "TZ" back in the 80's. Great episode by the way.

Cameron Diaz??? Oh dear... I liked the idea better when Eli Roth was attached to it...

It does really suck that this movie has to worry about Saw 6 (!!!!). What does that say about American moviegoers?

Hopefully this will give Saw a run for it money. That franchise is becoming quite blunt.

With this big-name, mainstream cast and the diminishing fanbase of the Saw series, I think it will do fine. Unfortunately, I don't think it looks like a very Halloween-ish movie. Seems more like a psychological thriller in the vein of A Simple Plan than a true horror movie.

If it means anything, I'd try this over a Saw movie any day...

I will probably see both because I don't really care which one does better in the box office. I could careless who wins in the box office ranking just as long as I am entertained.

The average second weekend for the last 2 Saw movies was $10 million. If a decent horror flick opened up against Saw 6 on it's second weekend it would do just fine.

cant wait to see this. i also like cameron diaz. i hope that it does better than the never ending saw movies.

How is this simple idea expanded into a feature-length film? Sounds tough.

DudeoftheDead--First, your avatar is rocking Tom Atkins awesomeness, I salute you. Second, I too am watching the TZ fro the 80's with the lady-friend right now. Do you remember the episode 'The Elevator'? Very, very cool.

'Saw' movies are fucking lame. Sorry kids. One day you'll look back and say, "Now why did I ever think ANY of those flicks were good?" Shit. As for Cameron Diaz's 'Box'... I would see it because Dick Kelley made a good film once upon a time, and I laughed at James Marsden in 'Sex Drive'. Also, MiskatonicU & Dudeof the Dead... YES, 80's TZ is bad, bud awesome at the same time. I hate Cameron Diaz more than AIG bonus checks.

Looks decent. I might give it a view that weekend. If anything was to give Saw a run for the money it would be trick r treat.
