An Update on 'The Thing' Prequel!

It has been a few months since we broke the news that Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. has been tapped to direct The Thing prequel for Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment. A new interviewed was posted online today with "Battlestar Gallactica" show-runner Ronald D. Moore, who penned the screenplay for the prequel, where he updates us on the status of the project.

The Thing 1982 John Carpenter and Kurt Russell"I was working on The Thing. I finished. I did my last draft a few weeks ago and turned it in," Moore tells Sci Fi Wire "They [Universal Pictures] seem happy. They have a director [Matthijs Van Heijningen] assigned, and we'll wait to see when and if they green-light it."

"Well, the idea was to make a companion piece to Carpenter's," explaining how this is a prequel and not a remake. "I started on the project with the feeling that Carpenter's version is just an amazing piece of work. It's a great film, and we really wanted to honor that version.

"We wanted a piece that would link up to [the Carpenter film] and not supplant it. So we didn't try to sort of completely reinvent what it was. We wanted a movie that would sort of live alongside it."

Here's the synopsis we were exclusively provided a few months ago: The prequel takes place from the Norwegian camps point of view. An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realize that an alien life-form with the ability to take over bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

I like the idea of a movie that will "live alongside it" but am slightly disheartened to hear Moore explain that Universal simply "seem happy" about the project. This film could and should be a fantastic opportunity for something really special!

the synopsis makes it sound like a remake

if this is a prequel, it better have a damn interesting explanation of where The Thing came from. however, i am interested in the development of this.

That plot is exactly the same as Carpenter's version, right down to the Norwegians chasing the dog. Do these people think we're stupid. I bet it's going to be called The Thing as well, not The Thing 2 or anything to seperate it from the 1982 film. Why don't they just admit it instead of bullshitting us all the time?

EVERYONE IS RIGHT. This is totally how the Carpenter version is. What is so different ? Just call it a re-imagining like everyone else does today and leave the companion piece bullshit alone. People are not that stupid that know this movie. Quit insulting us.

There's a lot of remakes I really want to see but not as bad as the 'Curse of the Demon' remake! Kenneth Brannagh said in an interview he wants to remake this magnificent movie. This is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Dana Andrews is one of the greatest actors of our time, epic and riveting!!!

When is 'The Thing' prequel starts production? I hope they chose a hip cast.

"Here's the synopsis we were exclusively provided a few months ago: The prequel takes place from the Norwegian camps point of view." thats the synopsis for the new film, the rest of that paragraph should have a break to summarize the first flim. And pertaining to the new film it better have PRACTICAL EFFECTS not CGI or this will blow. Everyone knows that the practical effects are what made that movie head and shoulders over anything at the time.

i cant believe they are feeding us this garbage and trying to disguise it as a prequel. if they really wanted to do a prequel there should be no americans in it at all. i would almost rather them remake jaws than this... at least they can make the shark more badass; i dont think they can improve on anything from the first movie, unless kurt russell were cast as 2 characters lol

Everyone needs to stop jumping to conclusions, read what Skcumfuvker25 said. thats how i thought of this news and i'm sure thats how it is. What else do you think "from the Norwegian camps point of view" means?

companion piece, prequel, sequel, reboot, reimagining. Call it what you will but we all know its NOT an original and exciting new film filled with fresh ideas. More shameless lets make a quick buck from greedy Hollywood.

This will not succed the 1982 version! No way in hell! Brittany spears tried the same thing, she rebooted herself but shes still CRAP, LOL

They need to alter that synopsis they keep posting because it's confusing and making people think it's more of a remake than a prequel. I hope that it isn't a remake because I think the story from the Norwegian's point of view would be intersting seeing how they dug up the thing from the ice.

I'll still watch it. Showing them unearth it, meaning we'll get to see the inside of that massive ufo it arrived in. Could be pretty cool!

As long as they don't go and f*** it up...I am totally there.

Is this guy on crack? i was interested when i read "The prequel takes place from the Norwegian camps point of view." then came the....plot for..the....original? yea. I feel like they are insulting our intelligence. i dont see this REMAKE being good, especially when we already have someone telling us that its something its not.

Reading this article, I don't think they're saying it's going to continue to retread the original movie at all (I'd hope Ronald Moore would deliver something pretty decent, after all). I came away from this synopsis as they're saying it's going to follow the Norwegian team all the way UP TO the point where they came into the original movie shooting at the dog. You know, like... why they're shooting at the dog. C'mon, guys, they've even made a critically acclaimed video game sequel as well as a decent comic book series set after Carpenter's movie. I know that in this day and age of the remake, you're all terrified of Hollywood butchering the way you remember your favorite movies (and for the life of me, I don't see the issues some of you have with F13, TCM, Halloween, etcetera)... but I really don't think this is just another remake for the pile.

Prequel or re-imagining?? One of my favorite movies is up for a Ronald Moore treatment. Based on his awful so called re-imagining of one of my fav series (1979) Battlestar Gallactica I hope he doesn't blow this one as well! I hope it truly is a prequel, following the Norwegian Scientific team and not just a bad remake of the American team. Especially since the 1982 movie is already a remake, and a great one, I hope Universal learns from the past. It was the actual special effects by magician Rob Bottin that made this Thing so good. If they CGI it up, it will suck. Plus, Carpenter's Thing had some pretty funny dialogue, just plain deadpan. I would hope they would retain the humor in a new one. I'll expect the worst and hope for the best, sigh...
