Saturday, March 14, 2009

With all of the remake chatter that takes place on the horror forums across the board, a nerve was struck with Night of the Demons director Adam Gierasch who decided to respond to all of the negativity surrounding the remake world. Over at his official blog you can read about his thoughts, which I believe are dead-on. Go forth and check out what he has to say and then drop a comment below to let us know what you think about the matter. Night of the Demons is slated for release on October 9th from Seven Arts.

This gentleman offers some valid points, that's for sure. I look forward to both Autopsy and his Night of the Demons. I've already preordered Autopsy, sight unseen, which comes out at the end of this month.

He's Right. but money is not the only reason old horror is being remade. fact is most 80's horror had shit wrong with them. wether it was technical or story based. they could all use some tweaking. the original "chainsaw" was incredibly slow and boring at times. the original amytiville was edited very badly and it was just all around bad technically. Friday the 13th could be approached from many different angles based on the first few films in the series. anyone whos seen the original last house on the left can see whats wrong with that film. a nightmare on elm street had an original story but the dialogue was poorly written. the 80's were overall cheesy and the movies were no exception.

agreed. its true people complain about how much they hate remakes. the original is always gonan eb there dont watch it if u dont like it. i dont agreee with everything directors do on remakes but most of the time it still becomes a good movie. key is to look at it as a new movie and not a remake. just what i think

Another one who agrees with Adam is me. If I was a director and had a chance to remake an old horror movies, I'd friggin do it! Nomatter how good or bad the original was, remakes and sequals only make the original film better in my view, even if they are kick ass flicks. I understand how people can not want remakes, every world has its die hard fans, star wars, soccer, niptuck, poker ..whatever it may be there are going to be fans that are very critical and other fans who are gonna go with the flow in a "whatever" mindset. Being open minded is the type of person I am with horror movies. Remakes are good for the genre even if they suck like Prom Night, or kick ass like Friday the 13th.

Of course he'd say that because he's getting cash from them? I find it hilarious you stick up for all these second rate horror writers/directors yet trash Spielberg for daring to consider remaking Oldboy. The fact is you stick up for horror remakes because you get fed cash from Platinum Dunes. Before they came along you trashed remakes along with everyone else.

Horror Writer

To say his big break is a remake then he's bound to stick up for them. But regardless of what he says Hollywood has gotten out of control with having to remake EVERYTHING! And how come it's only Hollywood that feels it necessary to remake everything anyway? And so what if the original versions are flawed, sometimes that's part of their charm

He makes some good points. This however does not change the fact that most remakes simply are not good movies. Holding out hope for this one though.

I love remakes. I love seeing a story I like alot being made modern or redone with a larger budget.

Do agree with him for the most part, as I am actually starting to like some of these remakes. But it would be great for this to be said by someone who's not benefiting from the remake situation in any form. A fresh perspective, ya know?

Static, that's the point. It has nothing to do with the "act of remaking", but has everything to do with churning out a movie that is sub-par or mediocre. Movies like that are usually dismissed by casual horror fans by saying, "Well, so what if the acting was bad, or there was more tit than story?! That's how the older horror movies were! It's nothing worthy of an Oscar, but it's not Uwe Boll shit!". That's a very flawed way of thinking. Here you have more resources to make a BETTER movie, or at least take it to the next level in horror(just like Carpenter did with The Thing, and Cronenberg did with The Fly), but what do you do? You achieve to make it "at least" as good or around as good as the original(give or take a few steps up or down). It's like someone really STRIVING for that C-average. You could put some effort, and get Bs or As, but no, mediocrity, the mid-level of existence. But hey, at least you aren't getting Ds and Fs, and that's what REALLY matters, right?

I cant believe that this guy is feeding us the whole "I have bills to pay" excuse, as a defence to him re-making a movie. EVERYONE has bills to pay, and i dont feel the least bit sorry for the guy. I read and re-read this blog, and he pretty much is telling us that he is doing this for the money and to jump-start his career. He did have some valid points, but the bottom line is this: Horror fans have every right to be suspicious and guarded about people re-making films that they love. And to voice those opinions. The standard SHOULD be higher for people like this guy, and i personally will be MORE annoyed when fans stop complaining and become complacent to people re-making their favorite films. For every Rob Zombie out there who is a millionare already, and wants to make re-makes because he loves the source material, there are 5 guys like this who want publicity and money.

Remakes are really good most of the time... better effects, bigger budget, brings in a whole new audience, ect... Even if a movie DOESN'T need remade, it's still nice to get an updated version of some of your favorite movies. If you don't like the 'reimagined' version... You can always stick with the original... NO BIG DEAL. I think some people just like to bitch about remakes because they have nonething better to do... Except whine and moan on the internet ;)

I agree with Adam, Whats the point of making a origanal movie if no one wants to see it? (not that I dont like origanal movies) But look at the movies that are being made. MIRRORS That movie was so bad I fell asleep half way through it. BUG I got one word for it crazy. THE BROTHERHOOD OF BLOOD dumb, dumb, dumb. I would rather se a remake or a sequel any day of the week.

'Whats the point of making a origanal movie if no one wants to see it?' What a bullshit statement! Of course people want to see original movies. It's Hollywood's dumb thinking that says we don't, all because non-horror fans are rushing out to watch the likes of Friday the 13th. Just because YOU don't want to see anything original that does not mean NO ONE else wants to, like your statement claims

Actually, people would see what ever the hell interests them, be it a remake or original. It's just that there aren't as many originals around, hence more remakes being made, that's all anybody's going to see. "Oh, people are paying big money to see remakes, cause, DUH, that's all that's out there in terms of horror!". Remember, back in the old days(well, they did it up to the 90s) when there was actually original content, and they showed commercials and people became excited because of the commericals. "Wow, that looked interesting! I think I might watch it!". There WERE times when the majority of horror releases weren't big name Hollywood flicks, and big name horror were few. I think that might be the problem. Sure, it's a business. But, the soul of the horror genre has always been about the indie flicks. All the great franchises started out as indie horror flicks. Don't with sticks and stones, with blood, sweat and tears. The good old school craft. I really don't care for Hollywood gaining a foothold over the Indie horror market. It's like, Hollywood saw that horror had it's own fanbases, and they started to suck up all the big franchises and pimp them out(then later, remake them). It's alright to love money, but like I say, if you want to be a film director and money is your number one love over the art of horror, you should've seriously thought about what genre you wanted to work in. Drama is does pretty damn good with the earnings. Action and Family films as well. Comedy, well, it's a craft(like Horror, actually), but if you can make the laugh, you'll most likely get MORE out of them than a horror film will. You're in the right business, wrong genre, pal!

at the end of the day, ITS JUST A FU%$ING MOVIE. Horror fans take shit waaaaaaaay too seriously. some nerds act like its a fu%$ing crime against humanity that they would dare remake an old horror movie. The movie industry is a business first people! GET OVER IT, ya know there is a war going on don't ya?

Big Bad Wolf

The thing about horror movies is that the flaws in them make their good points stand out more. If a film were perfect in every technical manner, and in every broad stroke, I'm sure it'd be pretty dull to watch. Besides, horror moves in cycles anyways. Dracula was made in 1931, then 27 years later, it's remade. And then it's done again...and again...and again...now, people just don't care. It should be considered an honor that these characters are even thought of so fondly that they'd be kept alive for so long, like Dracula has.

I guess I have to say that although I complain about remakes, they really don't affect me that much once I step away from my hatred of ignorance (and fear that someone out there is dumb enough to think that the Friday the 13th out now is the first one.) I mean, nobody's that dumb, right? Right? So, like the article said, we all need to focus on lesser-known movies, which is why I started my own blog to review movies that aren't necessarily what nerds (one of which I admit to being) consider the absolute classics.

I likke remakes, but i hate bad yet overly-hyped remakes. And Adam makes points. I kinda see his side of the world. But how come new original movies are straight to dvd and nver heard of? Because all these reamkes are pushing them off, that is why!!! And some films need to be remade, like mav07 said. And FYI:Night of the Demons needed to be remade badly! But Adams says that he's doing it to jumpstart his career and for bills. I find that kinda bullshit! Yet if someone gave me 12 mill and some fancy filming equipment, and said, "Remake any movie you want!", I would do it in a heartbeat!

Horror Writer, I did not say I did not want to see any origanal movies, what I did say was the origanal movies today ARE CRAP. The reson why is the older movies were alot better thats why there is a part 1, part 2, so on and thats why they live on today. They are some good origanal movies today like THE STRANGERS and some are even good enough to have seuqels like WRONG TURN, WHITE NOISE, JOY RIDE, and so on. But for the most part are junk and thats why REMAKES and SEQUELS out sell them. I diliked the new FRIDAY THE 13TH, but lets face facts JASON is a legend, so is MICHAEL MYERS, FREEDY KRUGER, CHUCKY, so on. Thats why people want to see them and because THEY ARE AWESOME!!! Iam not trying to be a punk about all of this, but I still say I would rather see a REMAKE or SEQUEL any day of the week.

There's a big difference between remaking a 5 year old movie (Oldboy) and a 20+ year old movie (Night of the Demons). The only reason to remake Oldboy is to do it in English, which I consider insulting to my intelligence. Plus, you honestly think a Steven Spielberg version is going to have the guy fuck his daughter? Granted, his movies always have daddy issue themes, but I don't quite think he's got the balls to do that.

showtime1976

listen grayboy, you dont know much about movies, The (NIGHT OF THE DEMONS) I saw was in english. As far as your intelligence, you cant insult someone who goes by grayland and does not know what they are talking about.

depecheanix

Well that's not the issue. Spielberg is doing another adaption of the manga. Which runs at 8 volumes. The stuff taken from it for the Korean version of Oldboy would barely take up two of the volumes. So really who cares. It's a not a straight up remake of the Korean Oldboy. Is it being remade because of the Korean film? Of course it is, but he's going back to teh source to make a variation on the theme. Overall who cares. 5 years, 20 years it doesn't matter.
