Last July, Sonny Mallhi, an exec VP at Vertigo, passed around a screenplay he wrote under a pseudonym so it would be given fair consideration in the marketplace. The script, The Roommate, was quickly acquired by Sony Screen Gems. Today casting has officially begin for the film, which is set to be directed by Christian E. Christiansen. You can read all of the juice inside.
Leighton Meester, one of the stars of "Gossip Girl," is getting ready for some late-night whispering sessions on the big screen.
The actress is in negotiations to star in the Sony Screen Gems thriller "The Roommate." Christian E. Christiansen is directing, and Roy Lee and Doug Davison's Vertigo Entertainment is producing.
The story follows Sara (Meester), a college student who is randomly assigned to a freshman dorm with a stranger named Rebecca. Things turn deadly when Rebecca becomes obsessed and begins targeting people in Sara's life.
The role of Rebecca has not been cast.
Sonny Mallhi, an exec vp at Vertigo, wrote the script and is also serving as an exec producer.
The project was brought in by Screen Gems creative executive John Graham.
On the CW's buzzworthy "Gossip Girl," Meester plays Blair Waldorf, a snobby rich girl at the top of the social chain. Meester has ap¬peared in a several indies, but "Roommate" marks Meester's biggest studio production to date.
She is repped by Endeavor and Leverage Management.
Another CW star in a Screen Gems flick...actually, this makes the third star of "Gossip Girl" to star in a Screen Gems flick. Weird. But I love Leighton Meester and this film sounds pretty interesting. I hope it's not PG-13...
