I have listened to Rob's music for a long time, and really enjoyed it. Then when he did the animation for Beavis and Butthead Do America, I thought it was pretty neat. I read the screenplay for the Crow: 2037 and thought, well in a Vandamme Cyborg kinda way it seemed to be a no-brainer thriller, but I felt he should stick with song lyrics. Then he did House of 1000 Corpses, which I was with him on it, until the film went underground in the house, and then I became overwhelmed with too much going and not enough really pretaining to the paper thin plot. While he did seem to rip off movies like the original Chainsaw and Chainsaw 2 with it, it had potential, so I hung on. Reject's was a staunch improvement in everyway, so when Halloween was announced, I thought (being the hardcore Carpenter fan, hey I love Village of the Damned) this was the way to go! One major thing that bothered me about the illfated film was that to me it became a "look who is in my movie", and too many wink wink, nudge nudge moments, and not enough just telling the story and building atmosphere. This picture, and the whole "Chainsaw 2 reunion" is further proof of his resultant behavior of not letting go, and making the most of some no names or some people that could become genre legends in their own right. And I still want an explanation that is good for the return of Michael and Loomis, because his need to keep it "real, and gritty" are starting to wane. Don't say those things, and then resort to the slasher gimmicry. if you wanna make a slasher and use the gimmicry then that is fine, just don't say you won't and then write such. So I hope he has an ace up his sleeve, and doesn't use the Patrick Duffy method of resolving things. And then story wise already, I am not sure why he wants us to connect to Michael. So what if he is a white-trash child, and nurture wins out over nature (as Nature was John Carpenter's choice of evil), I really wanted to have the average build, force of nature that haunted me as a child back from the original. Nick Castle is not a 6'5", 350lb nightmare, he is a nightmare because no matter what, he can not be stopped. He was evil incarnate. And for the record, I found that a 6 year old middle-upper class child snapping with no instigation a lot more disturbing. I will still give Rob a chance to make an enjoyable piece, but I have some serious reservations thanks to H1. Try hard Rob, you are a very creative person and I think you can strike gold twice.
