Even after it's shocking 80% drop following a record breaking opening weekend, New Line Cinema already has Platinum Dunes thinking about Jason Voorhees' return from the dead. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who wrote the recently released the Friday the 13th reboot, have already started working on a script for a new picture. Read on for more details.
"Unlike the sophomore efforts of other franchises, the new “Friday” is expected to be not a sequel so much as a follow-up, those familiar with the project say," reorts Risky Business Blog "Jason Voorhees will be the villain, of course, but the new picture is expected to use elements of the original franchise more as a jumping-off point than as a template.
The reason? The reboot drew from the first four pictures in the “Friday” series, and producers are said not to be keen on the plot elements of the half-dozen movies that followed. And Marcus Nispel, who directed the latest film, is a possible but unlikely candidate to helm the “Friday” follow-up; the director is believed to be fielding offers for movies across other genres."
We're being told that there will almost definitely be a new director at the helm, which I'm OK with. I think they need to really find a way to make this franchise FEEL more like a Friday the 13th movie and not a Texas Chainsaw Massacre flick.
"The wild cards are stars Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti; though both survive in the latest film and are considered rising young stars, they also are on hit TV shows (“Supernatural” and “The Mentalist,” respectively) and their schedules could be too packed."
An interesting thought I had was - what if the end of the film is actually a dream in an homage to the original Friday? This could set up an interesting opening for the sequel...
"Insiders caution that there is no green light and Platinum Dunes and New Line are actively working together on another franchise reboot, “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” which is set to start shooting in two months.
Still, the “Friday” property is a desirable one, and in a best-case scenario the next film could be ready as early as the second half of 2010."
We're being told August 13, 2010 is the likely date, not that it's obvious or anything...
"The first reboot, which brought a group of attractive young victims nack to get slashed at Camp Crystal Lake, was one of the surprise hits of the winter, earning $70 million worldwide. New Line and Paramount split domestic and international rights on the recent release and likely would do so again on a new picture."
VERY Excited about this! I really hope Jared returns as Clay and becomes basically the new Tommy Jarvis. I feel with these types of movies you HAVE to have that kind of character, someone who has survived and moved on to the next film. Nancy from Nightmare, Laurie from Halloween, Sidney from Scream, ect...you NEED those type of characters and Jared's character Clay is the perfect representation of that.
i'm sorry, did i read that right? Did that actually say that it hasn't been green lit in the same article saying that it was officially announced? I'm ok with shannon and swift returning, but they need better direction this time, what they had to say about what they wanted to do with the remake was a bit underwhelming to the fans of the old series who had hoped too much wouldn't be changed. And we DEF need a new director, the shaky cam, quick shots of Jason weren't cutting it for me, it was distracting and annoying.
I don't think the huge drop off mattered because it did so well opening weekend and is a profitable movie. Obviously people still want to see Jason, including myself.
Awesome news!!!! The sequel will probably be even better, which will be tough to do. The new one was awesome! Glad to see Shannon and Swift will write this one too, that way they can build off the first.
I agree with Static- councillors and an up and running camp this time.
I enjoyed the 'reboot' although I agree with Tex and the crew on their podcast that it was more of a 12th film than a 'reboot'. I kind of started the film expecting a reboot, but then accepted it was more of a sequeal after around 30 mins. I forgive it some of the changes to the story as it was planned as a reboot. I hope for this that they just go full hog and embrace the Friday world fully rather than mix in Texas Chainsaw elements.
whats with booting out sequels every year, SAW, TWILIGHT and Jason, cant think of any other series at the moment
TAKE TIME and find an awesome director (nispel was good) not dude from star wars (george lucas) though he fucked up indian jones
The huge opening weekend pretty much greenlit the next two in the series as far as i'm concern. It's probably going to make over 100 million with worldwide grosses.Plus expect the DVD to be a big seller. The friday the 13th series is a cash cow right now.I saw the movie twice and it was just plain fun and a good time at the movies.
One thing I forgot to say in my first comment: If the sequel gets made I really, really hope Derek Mears returns as Jason. He was great, probably the most aggressive Jason we've gotten since Kane Hodder first put on the mask in Part VII.
