Because it is so completely necessary, Hollywood Reporter... er, reports that Neil Moritz (producer of such classics as Stealth and Prom Night) is looking to put together a remake of Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall, which starred our governor, Michael Ironside, and a lady with three boobs. If this actually goes forward, I THINK this will be the first remake (not counting foreign to American translations like Let The Right One In) of a movie I saw during its initial run in theaters. Am I old or is the "It's time for a remake!" window just growing smaller? Read on for a few more details, and look for a remake of Paul Blart: Mall Cop to get announced any minute.
Per Hollywood Reporter:
Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner are in final negotiations to develop and produce for Columbia a contemporary version of "Total Recall," the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.
The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
The movie explores one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, as audiences never knew whether or not the story was a dream. Either way, the movie grossed a very real $261 million worldwide.
Carolco was behind the original movie, which was distributed by TriStar. Dimension picked up the rights for a reported $3.15 million with the aim of developing a sequel. Columbia secured the rights from Miramax, which retained them when Harvey and Bob Weinstein left to start their own company.
Calling Dick's story "prescient," Moritz said he hoped the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the "Recall" story in a fresh way.
How about he's not sure if what he's experiencing is a remake or not? That would be meta-cool.
Wow. Your first movie ever ? I feel real old. I don't exactly remember my first. But TOTAL RECALL is way to new to remake. There should be atleast a 20-25 wait to remake something. I can't wait for the remake of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.
Ok, now this is going too far. Remake madness is getting outta control. Wait for next weeks announcement of remakes of The Dark Knight, The Wrestler and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.
I think its a great idea to remake this. I mean think about it, with the advances in special effects, we may get a girl with FOUR breasts this time. Five if the budget's big enough.
20 years is not really a short time between original and remake. Some of the greatest remakes of all - CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HORROR OF DRACULA, THE THING, INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS - were made less than 30 years after the classic originals. Universal's original FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA were both made less than 20 years after silent versions of the same stories. The only difference is that now you can watch any movie you want any time you want, and there are websites and cable channels where 20+ year old films are running or being discussed at all times. 20 years doesn't feel as long as it did prior to the advent of the digital age. But if you honestly think that there's no way contemporary effects tech or a better director couldn't improve on the ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS ending of Verhoeven's version of this story, you're deluded.
They already have a remake for Paul Blart, it's Seth Rogan's Observe and Patrol. Fuck these remakes, maybe it't time to start protesting films until we see some creative thought going into it.
The Thing A. was not really a remake, but thats semantics and not as important as B. the fact that it was actually 31 years later. And Dracula and the others had the bonus of actually having SOUND for their remakes, and then later, color.
This was an awesome movie to pop my cherry with haha
I really think there's no way this can be good, I hope to god they don't cast The Rock as Quaid...
i really dont understand why they would remake this when the original still sells and is still very popular. i know a sequel was talked about for years and they should develop that, not a remake. I mean, who would replace Arnie? If they go forward with this i guarentee it will fail because todays kids are still discovering and loving the original. KM
You're all not so far off. They're remaking "The Orphanage" already. Yeah, you know, "The Orphanage" that was in theaters about 2 years ago? Its being remade. As for this, can you say CGI fake tits??
I love the original; one of my fav sci-fi action flicks ever. It's also one of the best Philip K. Dick adaptations. I saw it again recently and it really hasn't dated much at all; relevant to today as much as it was back then - because it was only fucking 1990!!!
Well, I guess everyone should just sit back and watch all the remakes that people are doing. That's what they get paid the big bucks for. This is a bunch of shit!!!!
Cohaagen, you got what you wanted; you must give those people air!
