Just last night I watched the original Ghostbusters at a theater here in Los Angeles. It's still one of my all-time favorite movies and I couldn't help but wonder why the franchise hasn't continued on. Is it really that hard to get a new Ghostbusters film back in theaters? Hopefully the trigger is about to be pulled, and some new developments have hit the web that are pretty encouraging. Read on for the skinny.
"In Boston to promote a new House of Blues, Dan Aykroyd answered some online questions for the Boston Globe - as is typical, the first question asked was about Ghostbusters 3
[Comment From Tom] Dan, I'm extremely excited for the HOB to be back in its birth-city!! I will be attending many shows. On a side note, and I'm sure you get these questions a lot, so I apologize in advance…Ghostbusters 3? I've heard that the writers of the Office are currently penning a script? How is this coming along, and should we look forward to this movie seeing the light of day? Thanks Dan!
Dan Aykroyd: Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009
What's it mean? Well, it doesn't mean a Ghostbusters 3 is a sure thing. It means that if all goes well, the script commissioned last year will hopefully get the green light by around June, and if that happens, then hopefully the movie will go into production in the Fall. So, excellent to hear Dan is still pushing forward with the film, but it's still not a done deal yet."
It was officially announced this past September by Columbia Pictures that the third Ghostbusters film was being scripted by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. It was also revealed that the four original busters, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, were all in talks to return. My personal hope is that the four make a small cameo to pass the torch onto a new group of protonpack-wearing mofos who ain't afraid of no ghosts.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the original film that kicked off a sequel, a theme-park attraction at Universal Studios and one of the best kids cartoons of all-time. The official video game is set for release this June, along with Blu-ray releases of the first two films.
I'd hope the original cast would make more than just a small cameo in the new movie, but agree with the idea of passing the torch to some newer, younger Ghostbusters.
I don't see Bill Murray signing on for a cameo. I could imagine a movie where younger recruits play a minor role and then maybe have that lead to a part 4.
...why on earth would you only want the 4 of them to make a small cameo when they could be in the duration of the movie? Passing the torch onto younger ghostbusters is a stupid idea, it's like Rambo passing his torch onto a younger Rambo or James Bond...yea, you know James Bond Junior? SUCKED...Young Indianna Jones? SUCKED! So let's keep it real here...I don't care if they're busting ghosts in wheelchairs...
Wow ... no offence, but that plot idea is friggin' awful. Absolutely typical of a lack of real ideas. The 'passing the torch' idea would be a disgrace. If they do that I'll be very very upset. Ghostbusters is about 4 guys busting ghosts. Against the odds. Jeez!
Actually... the more I think about the last words in this article the more I realise I just lost a little respect. What fan of Ghostbusters would want the packs passed on? NO true fan. I'm all for development but that's like slapping the real fans in the face. I heard rumours that George Lucas had said that he wanted to have Indy pass the torch to Shia! Luckily he retratced that statement later ... but I could HEAR the gasps from the real fans from around the world! Think this will be any different? No way. Don't do it!!!!
this just kicks all kinds of ass!
i just hope they actually try and don't just pump it out to make money.
and i'm looking for more than just a cameo. maybe they try to "pass the torch", but the new guys just can't cut it so the originals come back and come to the rescue (from the city in peril).
"My personal hope is that the four make a small cameo to pass the torch onto a new group of protonpack-wearing mofos who ain't afraid of no ghosts." That's an absolutely dreadful idea. The appeal of seeing GB3 is to see all four of these guys together again.
Mr. Disgusting, how could you call yourself a Ghostbusters fan and then say you hope this movie passes the torch onto a new team? With only small cameos by the originals? Sounds more like your a fan of proton packs than you are of the Ghostbusters. Let me guess, you want Seth Rogen to be a Ghostbuster, right? And then 10 years before that you probably wanted Adam Sandler...then 5 years before that you wanted Will Smith...how about we just have the original and ONLY Ghostbusters, and not try to replace them with whoever is currently popular.
Pass the torch to who?Who the hell could follow Murray and Aykroyd?Either make a sequel with the original line up or leave well alone.Im having horrible thoughts of Jack Black and Ben Stiller wearing proton packs.
Actually, Jack Black and Ben Stiller being the "Next Gen" Ghostbusters isn't as bad as having Dane Cook as one of the Next Gen Ghostbusters. THAT would be horrible!
Yeah passing the torch is the dumbest idea imaginable. Watching that movie would be about as enjoyable as passing a kidney stone.
Honestly who here went to see ghostbusters because they were interested in seeing actual ghost catching? I went because it looked funny and the cast was great. If you want younger ghostbusters then make a movie called the spirit catchers. Don't wipe your #%$ with a good franchise. Hollywoods been doing to much of that lately.
Let's hope they go for the original Ghostbusters vibe and not the lame sequel. In order for the comedy to work, the threats must be real! The ghosts must look scary, not cartoon-like! You can have great looking scary ghosts and still sell toys.

If this doesnt happen at least by summer 2010 i dont see a part 3 hapenning at all and the project will eventually turn into a remake if a 3rd is not made by then.
