Craven's Idea for 'The Hills Have Eyes 3'

Even though Fox Atomic's The Hills Have Eyes sequel didn't destroy at the box office (37m worldwide), there is already talk of a third installment in the franchise, which began once again with Alex Aja's reboot back in 2006. After a screening of The Last House on the Left this evening we chatted with Wes Craven about the Hills franchise and where it could go.

The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007)Another well known Wes Craven film that was remade was The Hills Have Eyes (1977), which was remade by Fox Atomic back in 2006. Three years later, there is new talk of a third film in the franchise and Craven knows exactly where he wants to take it...

There's discussion about a possible Hills 3 and we’ll take it in a totally different direction,” while also explaining that the film will not go straight-to-disc, “I'm not interested in doing straight-to-video. If it can't make it in theaters then…"

He continues talking about his ideas for a third film in the franchise that focuses on a mutant civilization living on through the ages after being radiated by atomic tests in the nearby desert.

"There are a lot of good movies still in that concept," he explains, "you know The Outsiders and I’d like to flip it actually and have them integrated a little into our society and run into prejudice or something…because they have this ability to survive anything, maybe be recruited by the society that’s about to throw them out.

Part 2 was so awful, just really poorly made.

The remake is the 6th best film of all time, 2nd was allright, but in the third they should make it more hardcore than the remake.

yeah, part 2 was truly an insult to what Aja had just done (part 1) AND just a lame and "what-were-they-thinking" movie. and maybe it's just me but the storyline Wes touched on for part 3 sounds kinda lame (at least judging by those few sketchy ideas) but maybe it's come together in the movie.

I would like to see what they do with a #3. This was a rare remake that I thought was better than the original. #2 I agree was not that good. Bring Aja back.

The remake was incredible. Aja is a freakin horror genius. But the sequel was so incredibly bad that I don't see this franchise surviving even if part 3 ends up being great. People are going to be so reluctant to see it after watching the 2nd one. Sorry if I'm being too pessimistic but I just finished watching the Grudge 3. If you see that movie, you'll understand my cynicism ;)

This could work. Part 2 was god awful but the first was fantastic. Just spend time on a decent script this time, Wes.

Let's all hope that Wes remembers to use the Dog-Flashback this time!

ive only met one person who liked the second film, she's 56 years old and was scared witless. at least she got her £7 worth LMAO! id like to see a third film so we can truly put the devils abortion that was hills 2 behind us. KM

The first one is one of the scariest and best horror movies I've seen in the past few years. The second film was like a slap in the face to that, but it was very entertaining and fun to watch. I can't wait for the third film (if it does make it to theaters, as Wes Craven said).

Lets just hope its not like the original Hills Have Eyes 3 that the title was changed to Mind Ripper. That was total garbage and I am really bummed that it came in my Hills Have Eyes Box Set.

At the second Hills Have Eyes was better than the original second. (Does that make sense?)

Unfortunately Craven got heavily involved in 'Hills 2' and we all saw how that turned out. What's funny is after seeing the box office take of the 2nd one coupled with the fact that mutant hillbillies are yesterday's news--A 'Hill's 3' feels destined to be on DIMENSION EXTREME straight-to-DVD label.

theres nowt wrong with the DIMENSION EXTREME label my friend ;) KM

I really dug THE HILLS HAVE EYES, but the second was AWFUL! It was like drunk frat guys wrote the script. Could the dialogue have been worse? Just ridiculous! Yet, I'm still game for a third. Not sure how many people would bother with one though after how bad the second one was. Still, why not? It should at least make back its budget after DVD, and it could be good. Though Craven's idea sounds stupid.

I thought Hills 2 was really silly and fun and I'm not sure where they would be going with this idea for a sequel but I think a new addition would be cool as look as it sticks to its simplistic factor

Sounds like we'll have a mutated Ponyboy next time around. Aja won't be involved, so I'm not getting excited. Hills 2 was even worse than the original sequel.

The biggest problem with HILLS 2 was the military angle. This COULD have been good, had they bothered to avoid the usual cliches that plague this type of character. Perhaps if screenwriters spent less time watching ALIENS and more time with real military units, they'd have some idea how to portray them believably on-screen.
