13 Days of F13: Day Ten - Jason Goes To Hell

Man, remember the first time you saw Jason Goes To Hell? Or, more specifically, the last 10 seconds? It was every horror fan's biggest wet dream come (almost) true. But what about the 90 minutes before that memorable shot, did it satisfy Jason fans like BC? Read on to find out as we start to wind down on our epic 13 part retrospective on this beloved series.

13 Days of Friday the 13th

For a horror fan, there is no escaping Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th. Even if you have never seen a single movie (for shame!), you know who he is, what he does, and what he looks like. But that's from my perspective. I grew up in the 80s, played the video game on a system known simply as Nintendo (now referred to as "The 8 Bit"), and suffered the indignity of that comic where he fought a talking Leatherface.

But what about those who grew up in the Jason-starved 90s? The only Jason films they might remember in theaters are the ones where he fights Freddy or goes off into space. The remake may be their first real introduction to the hockey masked behemoth that stalks teenagers at a place known as Crystal Lake. So for them, Bloody Disgusting and Horror Movie A Day would like to present this retrospective series: 13 Days Of Jason. Each day leading up to the remake's theatrical release, BC will be showcasing one of the original films, with trivia, factoids, thoughts, and his own full blown review.

Bloody will also be presenting a few other articles that highlight some of the series' traditions, such as the lovesick nerd character and Jason's habit of using unique weapons. Because even if you don't agree with BC's assessment of each film, there's one thing we can all agree on: Jason fucking rules.

JASON GOES TO HELL write your own review

AKA: “The one without Jason”
RELEASE: August 13, 1993 (1,355 theaters)
GROSS: $15,935,068

PLOT: Sometime after the events of a few movies that we never got to see (which would detail how Jason grew back up and made his way back to Crystal Lake from New York), Jason is blown up by a bunch of SWAT guys. But some doctor eats his heart (just go with it) and becomes possessed by Jason’s soul. The movie then rips off The Hidden for a while before Jason is finally reborn (complete with all of his wounds and half-mangled hockey mask), only to be killed a few minutes later by a magic dagger and some giant puppet arms. An in-joke then frustrates fans for a decade.

THOUGHTS: Nonsensical “mythology” aside, it’s actually not too bad of a movie as a stand alone thing... but where the fuck is Jason? Come on, guys! At that point it had been 4 years since his last adventure, and they send him off (pfft) in a movie that he only actually appears in for like 10 minutes? Fuck that. At least his makeup is pretty great when you see it, and it’s also the most “quality” movie of the entire series (at that point), with actual production value and established actors and things like that (it certainly looks like it cost more than it did - the budget was actually lower than that of a few other entries).

(Read BC's full review at Horror Movie A Day)

BEST KILL: The whole diner massacre is pretty awesome. Not-Jason breaks a dude’s arm in half, smashes a fat woman’s face in, and tosses another guy on a grill. Then he squeezes a girl’s head until her brain shoots out. If it was actually Jason in the scene, it would probably be his best mini-spree in the entire series.

MOST "HUH?" MOMENT: Homoerotic shaving, anyone? Actually the whole movie’s kind of like that: Kane Hodder’s guard character takes an awful long time to pat down everyone that comes into the morgue (why is it so high security anyway?), and Creighton Duke’s jail cell scene with John LeMay has probably raised a few eyebrows as well. Say what you will about the movie, but you gotta admit it has a wonderfully quirky personality.

FUTURE STARS: Nothing earth-shattering, but a couple minor folks you may recognize pop up; including Leslie Jordan (who was a frequent guest star on Will & Grace), Steven Culp (Desperate Housewives), and Rusty Schwimmer (Perfect Storm).

TRIVIA: There’s a deleted bit that has never appeared on the DVD or anything. During the (awesome) opening sequence, the girl was going to spin around and shoot Jason with a small gun right before the SWAT guys show up. It would have been a way more awesome moment had they left it in (you can actually see the gun in her right hand as she runs for cover). Also - Crystal Lake is moved from New Jersey (more or less the accepted locale) to Connecticut.

This whole movie is worth watching just for that opening scene. Plus this one Isn't Jason Takes A Dump In Manhattan which is a huge bonus in my eyes.

Great opening, but man do I get discouraged after that guy eats jasons heart. Alot better then the most recent ones, with better acting and more serious tone......oh yea except for the plot of a jasonless storyline. Its worth dusting off for a F13 movie marathon once every halloween. As A Friday the 13th sequal, I give it a C+, as a stand alone, B-

i liked it. the freddy ending is amazing and i like the necronomicon connection too.

The beginning and the end of the movie were the only good parts of the movie to me. Like I've said before though, it's at least better than Jason Takes Manhattan! Too bad they couldn't think of something better to do with everything in-between the beginning and end.

The SWAT team opening is great then...nothing until a very weak ending . Much like Freddy's Dead I was expecting a huge fuck off climax but no. Instead we get Jason being stabbed! with a magical dagger ! then dragged underground by hands outta the Muppet Show. Pathetic!! And then as noted above we get cockteased for more than a decade waiting for FVJ. A piss poor 'ending' to another great Horror series. Pfft

I loved this movie when it was in theaters, but that's probably because I was FINALLY old enough to actually see a Friday the 13th at the cinemas. The movie has so many crazy moments and scenarios, love it! The whole dagger and "Vorhees" mythology was so out of left field I laugh every time. The diner scene kicks ass though, loved the waitress as she really puts up a fight!

This film has some cheesy goodness that I like about it. Sure it could have been a lot better and actually have Jason in it, but for what it is it's fun.

The final 90 seconds is just as bad as the previous 90 minutes. It all stinks.

Homoerotic? Can't say I ever picked up on that. But I guess you see wwat you want to see

When it was released you have to admit for a horror fan seeing the Necronomicon and Freddy's glove was sorta worth the whole missing Jason part!!!!!

I agree with a lot of you that the opening is good, and Jason looks cool as hell when we see him. I also agree that the movie is more polished and better acted than the last couple entries. What I think everyone is missing (probably because of our natural resistance to any F13 stuff sans Jason) is that this movie has one of the coolest kills of all time. When the chick in the tent gets split in half mid-coitus and her shocked boyfriend gets a blood shower, I think to myself "You know what? This isn't so bad!" Granted, you have to see the unrated DVD print to see the scene in its full gory glory, but still. If you just turn off your brain and accept the ripped off "body-jumping" premise at face value, that is Jason making his most pointed statement about premarital sex. That scene alone makes it much easier to forgive the movie's other problems.

I've got a few issues with this movie, though oddly none of them involved how Jason got back from New York without a boat to ride on or the fact that he grew up a second time and still ended up looking like such a badass. I saw this flick as a teenager, so I guess most of my complaints just rolled off like water while in the theater, I was as jazzed up as the audience was around me at the time. But alas, I got my grubby hands on a copy of this on VHS when it dropped by paying a shitload to my local video store, and that's when the seams started to show. Little things, like, well, where the fuck is Jason? Why did the doctor feel this strange urge to eat Jason's heart? Why was the Necronomicon in the movie when this wasn't The Evil Dead? Why was a dagger lifted directly from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (television, not the crap movie) in the finale? Why DID "Jason" feel the need to shave the deputy (what, he hates the feel of stubble like most women do? Does he kiss a lot of guys to know what that's like, exactly?) before he did the body swap? And why (beside them both now being owned by New Line) the ending with Freddy Krueger before they even had the slightest hint that there would actually be a Freddy vs. Jason? (For me, upon repeated viewings, that felt like Pinhead showing up in an Alien film. WTF?!) I still enjoyed the ride, in a not really a Friday the 13th kinda way, but this attempt to explain Jason's "mythology" (which truly, if we hadn't gotten it down by part 9, we were never meant to get it anyway: kid dies tragically (?), kid sees mom buy it hard (!), kid hates teens having fun of any kind and kills them brutally whenever he finds the time) was truly pointless and unnecessary.

The Jason meets "Shocker" idea was interesting but failed miserably as this, "Jason...Manhatten" and Part 5" battle it out to be the worst. I'll never watch it again even if it comes out in a director's cut with all the censored KNB gore. It's a beating I don't care to repeat.

I must agree the Opening sequence was very good...shame about the rest of the film...utter rubbish....hate it with a passion....tried watching it all the way through still can't manage it.....it's not the Friday the 13th we all love and know :(

This movie tears at me because it's actually not a bad movie for the individual storyline. What pisses me, and most others off, is the complete ignorance of the previous entries and the fact that there is no Jsaon. I can't believe Cunningham wanted a movie without him wearing the mask...what was he thinking?!?! The whole Jason has a sister was too Michael Myers for me.

Slipknot611: How could they use a "dagger lifted directly from Buffy the Vampire Slayer" when that show wasn't even on at the time? The "crap movie" was, though. This film does have it's share of dumb moments, but it was still fun to watch.

jkrouskop

The dagger may have been inspired by BUFFY, but more likely it came from THE OMEN series.

jason goes to hell is good..and actually..one of the true definitions of "directors cut" the r rated version is WEAK!!! the kills in this movie are damn near awesome!

Oh, damn, Coffinjoe... maybe I did see that dagger in the Buffy movie. Or was that The Shadow I'm thinking of..? I'd really hate to think Joss lifted that particular dagger from this movie...

movie should of been called. The Hidden 3.With a guest apperance by JASON VOORHEES.

DBlock

Yea, this one was bad too. I'd say the second worst. I thought 5 was but now I think it was 9. "Manhattan" being the absolute worst film in the franchise.

11ZOMBIES

How can anyone say Jason looks good in this? They made him into a bloated mushroom villain. This one is part three in the "Horrible Friday the 13th Trilogy", and is deserved of all the hate. I applaud the filmmakers for attempting something different, but they failed miserably. When I saw this in the theater I couldn't believe what I was watching, and it does not hold up well. A serious misstep, no wonder the series died for a few years after. Terrible.
