13 Days of F13: Day Seven - Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives

We're at the halfway mark for our retrospective series recapping all 12 Friday the 13th movies as we chug along toward next Friday's release of the Platinum Dunes reboot. Today we look at Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, in which Jason begins his 2nd life as an undead zombie monster. Did BC shine to the "new" Jason? Read after the break and find out!

13 Days of Friday the 13th

For a horror fan, there is no escaping Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th. Even if you have never seen a single movie (for shame!), you know who he is, what he does, and what he looks like. But that's from my perspective. I grew up in the 80s, played the video game on a system known simply as Nintendo (now referred to as "The 8 Bit"), and suffered the indignity of that comic where he fought a talking Leatherface.

But what about those who grew up in the Jason-starved 90s? The only Jason films they might remember in theaters are the ones where he fights Freddy or goes off into space. The remake may be their first real introduction to the hockey masked behemoth that stalks teenagers at a place known as Crystal Lake. So for them, Bloody Disgusting and Horror Movie A Day would like to present this retrospective series: 13 Days Of Jason. Each day leading up to the remake's theatrical release, BC will be showcasing one of the original films, with trivia, factoids, thoughts, and his own full blown review.

Bloody will also be presenting a few other articles that highlight some of the series' traditions, such as the lovesick nerd character and Jason's habit of using unique weapons. Because even if you don't agree with BC's assessment of each film, there's one thing we can all agree on: Jason fucking rules.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES write your own review

AKA: "The one that's just Jason killing people" or "The one with Horshack"
RELEASE: August 1, 1986 (1,610 theaters)
GROSS: $19,472,057

PLOT: Understanding that it's not the hockey mask that people like, Tom McLaughlin has Tommy Jarvis resurrect the real Jason, who sets his sights on the first group of camp counselors who actually counsel campers. Meanwhile, Tommy (who is actually responsible for everything that happens in this and all future movies, since it seems Jason was really dead until he had to go mucking about) eludes Sheriff Garris while trying to stop Jason once and for all (again). And Jason comes thisclose to killing a little girl.

THOUGHTS: My favorite entry, precisely due to the fact that there's nothing gimmicky about it (not counting the humor, which is largely ditched after the first half hour). It’s just a straight up Jason movie, with one of the best Jasons ever (CJ Graham) and some really great kills. Also, it was the last time the MPAA would go relatively easy on an F13 movie - it wouldn’t be until Freddy vs Jason that we'd see some serious splatter again in the theater.

(Read BC's full review at Horror Movie A Day)

BEST KILL: The triple decap would be the best if it wasn’t in a superfluous scene that went a bit too far in the "let's make it kind of funny" direction. So let's go with one that’s equally impressive: Jason literally breaking a guy in half.

MOST "HUH?" MOMENT: Sheriff Garris' inexplicable instant hatred of Tommy always puzzled me. He never even considers listening to him; instead he jumps down his throat as soon as Tommy walks into the room. Though it pays off with this howler: "If I had you where I wanted you they’d be pumping your ass full of formaldehyde!" There are some words that should never go together when you’re trying to sound tough to another dude, and one such example is "pumping your ass", regardless of the rest of the phrase.

FUTURE STARS: The girl who plays Megan went on to invent Celestial Seasonings tea, so there’s something. But the real surprise is Tony Goldwyn, best known as the guy who killed Patrick Swayze in Ghost (and the dad in the upcoming Last House on the Left remake) playing one of the film's first victims, a guy in the Steve Christy role of being in charge of re-opening the camp. Also, we have a Friday rarity - a FORMER star (Ron Palillo) as the film's first victim.

TRIVIA: Despite having the smallest core group of kids (four) of any of the films, Jason racks up his highest body count - 18 confirmed kills! - of all the Paramount entries (unless you count all of the anonymous students who presumably drowned in Jason Takes Manhattan). It's also the first time that the film’s director was solely responsible for the script.

Not as good as Parts 2 -4 but a huge step up after 5. It was great to have Jason , and Tommy back at Crystal Lake for another showdown. One thing I didn't like in this was the humor but other scenes made up for it , noteably the resurrection scene and the scene with Jason leering over the little girl in bed. Good kills throughout also make this a good one.

maybe my fav.

this one is one of the three best friday films right behind part 1 and part 4. It would have been much better without the humor and the kids that screams jay! when tommy defeats jason.

Always been my favourite F13 movie coz it's so fast paced and fun. Pretty much agree with everything you said on this one.I think the sheriff's hatred for Tommy is because he sees him as a threat to his daughter. But Tommy was a cool hero and Thom Matthews was far better than he was in Return of the Living Dead movies. Class!

Zombie Jason is awesome. Just a little less creepy to me than when he was alive.

This one is my fav. easily

Just a minor quibble: Jennifer Cooke went on to marry the guy who founded Celestial Seasonings, not to invent the stuff.

After the disaterously horrible part 5 this one is great. To bad 7 went back to shit land. Besides the stupid "Carrie" angle part of the blame lands on the censors as it was the most butchered entry in the series.

I think, aside from my nostalgic love of the original, this is my favorite Jason film. Is a great, fun, slasher pic and, to me, is the epitome of a "Jason movie". Love it, even if Tommy undid the good he did in part four by stupidly digging up Jason. If it weren't for him, where would we be today? >:)

I'm way off topic here, but I looked up that Celestial Seasonings factoid about "Megan" and it appears (courtesy of the sometimes not-100% accurate Wikipedia), that she is only married to one of the founders (Mo Siegel) of Celestial Seasonings. The company was founded in 1970, she married Mo in 1989. Interesting factoid, but not entirely correct. And also, heIIz yea it's cool when Jason breaks dat fool in half!

this was when jason became a wwe wrestler.

This one is okay, zombie Jason is cool, but it feels more clean and slick compared to the first five. A solid entry in the series, and the last decent one until Jason X.

Screamer

I really don't like the guy who played Tommy in this one. The actor was terrible. But it doesn't lower the film in any way, because it is a Jason movie and you can't expect epic acting. Best kill -- the girl's face smashed into the wall of the trailer for sure.

Def one of the best ones

I can't believe they didn't mention the NOES easter egg... When the little girl "Nancy" talks about the "monster" she saw in her dread, and how real he was.

One of my fav Friday Films. Though it is relatively mild in the gore dept, the humor, and Jason's sudden super strength goes a long way. I always like the guy who plays Tommy in this one as well. He is of course from another fav horror comedy of mine "Return of the Living Dead".

We may not all like this movie but that doesn't mean we gotta be pumping each other in the ass full of formaldehyde!

The last decent one since Jason X? Jason X was awful! I stopped enjoying them when it became less real and more hokey. Even though I prefer the man-like Jason and the idea of a "final girl" the best, part 6 and 7 were still fun rides. I felt from part 8 on they were bad. Taking Jason out of Crystal Lake completely disregards the fact that he killed anyone who entered his territory and because he saw his mother killed. I agree that CJ Graham was an awesome Jason. His build, the way he fast-walked, everything was great. And Jennifer Cooke and her orange Camero were sexy! To this day I still say to people "So what's it to ya?" because of her line at the police station before she breaks Tommy out.

I think "Part 6" and "Part 8" are probably the best Jason movies. In Part 6, we get to see Jason killing people all along of the movie. In Part 8, I thought the killings were great, and overall both movies are awesome.

I absolutely LOVE this movie! It has some of the most ridiculous dialogue, but done tongue-in-cheek enough to actually be fun instead of just cheezy. And the Sheriff is the best! I was also perplexed by his unexplained insta-hate of Tommy Jarvis. "Hey, you're that kid who's mom and friends were killed by that psycho, right? Well, that sucks, but FUCK YOU anyway!" pretty much haha. and how he's constantly threatening him ("I won't hesitate to re-paint this office with your brains!") but then when Tommy steers them off-course to look at Jason's grave, he still just drives him to the edge of town and is like "Okay, now get on outta here ya crazy kid". Fantastic Jason flick.

Anybody ever hear anything about Jennifer Cooke lately? Recent pics ect... She was really good. Shame she quit acting.

My favorite thing is that after the sherriff drops off tommy at the highway he turns around and goes the wrong way up an exit ramp.
