UPDATE: Huge 'Cabin in the Woods' Casting News!

Update: Interesting update regarding this story beyond the break. Bloody-Disgusting was tipped off this evening that genre fav Jena Malone (Donnie Darko, The Ruins) has been tapped to topline MGM's "top secret" horror project, The Cabin in the Woods, which was co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, with Goddard set to also direct. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford were the first announced to star last week. Much like CLOVERFIELD, which Goddard scripted, the CABIN story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario -- in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. The film is said to be the horror movie to end all horror movies. CABIN IN THE WOODS is slated for release on February 05, 2010.

Joss Whedon posted the following on his official website, claiming our tipster was sent "misinformation" because of sites like B-D. In a story over at the NY Times, it reported that Bill Nighy was also attached. Whedon claims it's all a load of BS, so I guess only time will tell if this misinformation is misinformation...

"Turns out that the New York Times’s info about the plot summary and the casting of Jena Malone and Bill Nighy is completely wrong.

"This is misinformation. While we are fans of both those actors, neither is attached to the movie. Just FYI."

"However, they ARE attached to the Serenity sequel."

"Oh. Also, they got the plot wrong."

"In order to protect the story from spoilerization, we’ve been sending out our OWN misinformation, including fake sides for the actors, fake summeries, different names... So there’s gonna be a lot of ’information’ leaked that will lead to excited speculation about things you will not see. Sorry. But here’s some stuff you CAN look forward to, my word on it:

1) A person will have an emotion.

2) two people speaking, or "dialogue", may occur.

3) A bunch of different people will play the part of Bob Dylan.

Hope that clears everything up. More updates soon!"

WHY oh WHY do you guys always post that this is "said to be the horror movie to end all horror movies"?? I haven't read that anywhere but here, and not only that but that is a sure fire way to make sure that everyone is dissapointed when they see it. How can ANY movie live up to hype like that? I must say, this website hyped up the movie Hatchet so much when it came out that I was seriously underwhelmed by it because you guys talked about it like it was the best movie EVER on the face of the planet.

They can't tell you, otherwise it will END ALL OTHER HORROR MOVIES FOR YOU! That's how amazing the plot is!

Of course, this was directly denied by Whedon a week ago when the rumor originally surfaced. Nice research. (Meanwhile, "the horror movie to end of horror movies, literally" was Joss' tease line when he first announced the existence of the script, back in 2007.)

Also, it opens Feb 5, 2010. Not Feb 10.

Malone is a hottie and, unlike many young actors and actresses today, can actually act. She was fantastic in "Into the Wild," I might add (great film, though not horror-- see it if you haven't). This is nothing but good news!

New layout is bogus. I understand that you have to monetize the site in some way, but the overabundance of adesense is really damaging your user interface. Personally I think the site is getting a little too crowded. If anything, hire a marketing guy. I'm up for it if you need it. I mean, removing the latest reviews and trailers from the left rail? Bad move.

There are plenty of horror sites. Why don't you clowns who are always pissing and moaning about Mr. D's coverage find them and go away? Seriously. You're boils on the ass of horror fandom, and your scathing critiques of a guy who actually works hard to maintain his site (as opposed to sitting around bitching about other people's pages) aren't likely to solve your chronic virginity problems. At any rate, I'm still decidedly underwhelmed by the talk of this movie. Malone's cute, but having her in CABIN IN THE WOODS is only slightly more thrilling than the announcement that Bradley "THE WEST WING" Whitford is onboard - which is to say, not very.

id rather watch a sitcom, then listen to this garbage about how its going to end all horror movies, first of all. leprachaun is probably going to me scarier then this crap, and leprachauns not even scary. so quit the bullshit and get on with horror movie making, not this garbage.

That is a tall statement to make and very ballsy. But I say anybody that goes out on a limb to say it, should be given the chance to prove it. Perhaps they have a really cool unique twist for the plot or direction. Once there is a trailer, we should get a little idea. If it sucks, they will take a royal verbal beating, that's for sure.

If they start playing games with us, I'll write a full synopsis for the script and tell everyone what it's about.... no reason to screw with our lively hood. JOSSSSSSSSSSSS, cut it outttttttttt

Strange they would be sending out misinformation about who's cast in the movie. It's not like knowing who is in it gives aways ANY of the plot. I love Joss though!

@jkrouskop: Have you not seen "Into the Wild?"

Damn you!!!...This is why horror movies end up sucking...because of all the hype, and then we are let down...I mean, the horror movie that will end all horro movies kind of gets you pretty pumped up and excited, but then the movie sucks n u ruin it for us...I mean, we probably could have enjoyed it if it wasn't all hyped up....damn..

Whedon shouldnt go pissing off the ticket-buying audience by playing games with them. He hasnt exactly had a hit movie in like............................... a while.

B-D is reporting Jena Malone of The Ruins is in line to take a leading role in The Cabin in the Woods, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's horror film which turns the genre upside down. With a little digging, however, one will find that The New York Times has already reported this...and it's been debunked by Whedon himself. Times's original piece paired the Malone casting with the addition of Bill Nighy. "This is misinformation. While we are fans of both those actors, neither is attached to the movie. Just FYI," said Whedon in response to the Times article. "In order to protect the story from spoilerization, we've been sending out our OWN misinformation, including fake sides for the actors, fake summeries, different names... So there's gonna be a lot of information leaked that will lead to excited speculation about things you will not see. Sorry. Why can't they just say it's gonna be "Really Fucking Scary" & leave it at that?? That way everybody will be waiting for it with a lot of anticipation. To call it the "Horror Movie To End All Horror Movies" is putting everyone involved with it at a MAJOR disadvantage.....
