'Friday' Sequel Talk, 'Elm Street' Update and 'FvJ 2'

With Friday the 13th arriving in theaters everywhere on February 13th, we caught up with Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller who talked with Bloody-Disgusting exclusively about the film, its potential sequel, the status on A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and even touches on FREDDY VS JASON 2. You can read all of the juicy details beyond the break or click the title above for over 40 hi-res stills.

Friday the 13th (2009) Jason VoorheesIt’s the nature of the beast to talk sequel, but put it in the back of your head until the first film comes out. Obviously a flop means the end of what could have been a sweet franchise, while a box office massacre will get a sequel greenlit nearly immediately (unless of course you’re talking about FREDDY VS JASON). Fuller chatted with us about his ambitions for a sequel to FRIDAY THE 13TH.

I think that if the movie does well, we're all interested in going back to Camp Crystal Lake and making another one,” Fuller tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive interview. “We had a great time and we have Derek [Mears] (Jason Voorhees) for another movie. We would love to work with him again, but we won’t make any plans set in stone until we see if the fans respond well to the one we just did.

Assuming FRIDAY kills the box office competition, Fuller explains that their A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET reboot is a priority over a sequel to FRIDAY.

NIGHTMARE will come first, we're gearing up to start that movie [now],” explaining that a director announcement is forthcoming. “We’re hopeful to announce a director in the next two or three weeks. Once that happens, we’re going to try and move ahead and start to get that movie going first. I believe that NIGHTMARE is the next movie we're shooting and we're hoping to shoot that in April/May in Chicago.

The next FRIDAY film will in fact be the 13th of the franchise. So far quality control comes before gimmicks – and again, the success dictates how big they can go on a sequel.

We don’t know what it would be, because we don’t know the level to which this one will work. The most important thing is the story – it won’t be more epic because it’s the 13th one. It’s important to us to maintain the quality like we have in this one. We want to have great actors, a lot of fun and great scares, that’s what we set out to do.

In Sean Cunningham’s original FRIDAY THE 13TH, the ending is a dream sequence that may or may not have set up a sequel to the film (depends who you ask). Fuller explains that the reboot is a stand alone, but implies that Jason’s return is imminent.

The same way that we didn’t go into TEXAS CHAINSAW trying to have a sequel there, I don’t think were looking to the end of this movie to set up a sequel,” he explains. “We want the story to stand on its own and we want the audience to leave satisfied. Again, if it does well, we'll all come up with a great way to go back to Crystal Lake.

Now that Platinum Dunes is taking on FRIDAY THE 13TH and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, could they be thinking about a sequel to FREDDY VS JASON?

No, we haven’t really thought about doing FREDDY VS JASON,” he explains, “I just don’t have a handle on how we’d do that movie. I don’t know exactly what Freddy [Krueger] is going to be yet, and until I know what Freddy is, I can’t commit until I know who is playing Freddy and how that pans out. But we haven’t thought about that at all. This is the first time I’ve thought about it at all.

Anyone who walks outside and passes a bus or billboard can see how much New Line Cinema believes in this film. For those of you who are couch potatoes, it’s impossible to miss the TV Spots. This could be big, and assuming it is, you might want to mark your calendars as here are three of the next Friday the 13th dates New Line will want to lock down for Jason’s return to Crystal Lake.

-November 13, 2009 (highly doubtful)
-August 13, 2010 (if H2 does well in August, could be very likely)
-May 13, 2011 (if we wait this long, I’d be nervous it won’t happen).

Call me nuts, but I have a feeling this movie is gonna do really well. And I am sure the Friday the 13th release date will help them put up good numbers on the opening. Im not exactly hyped up to see this, mainly because its a remake, but I will check it out eventually. I know one thing is for sure, I have absolutely no interest at all in seeing a new Freddy Krueger. I love Robert Englund and just cant see anyone else taking over that role from him.

I think it's pretty funny to already be talking about a sequel to "13th"...there have been so many others. To me, it's all pretty lame, though the remake looks good. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" IS a film that should be redone. I love Englundh...but, well, he's made a lot of money from this and can continue on with other roles. If only they could REALLY get David Lynch to direct, as rumored a few years ago!

Friday will do well. There will be a sequel, no doubt. I think the new Elm Street will perform well also. There is a whole new generation of teens that were years from being born when the originals happened. They will show great interest if they market and promote as expected. NO to Jason vs. Freddy 2. Why bother ? That was still dealing with the old school characters, they are now being re-introduced in the remakes. I say keep it fresh, no going back. My opinion.

It's hard to believe that 29 years later, we're talking a new Friday, possible sequels and a NOES reboot. Absolutely nothing can keep these films down. I'll bet Sean Cunningham and those producers in Boston had no clue what a monster they were creating way back when. Why anyone would want to see another Freddy vs. Jason is beyond me though. That movie nearly killed all the good will remaining that I had for either of these franchises -- nearly. I'll still turn out for this remake and probably buy the DVD cause I'm a sucker for it but wouldn't it be great if all this energy and time were going toward some fresh ideas. This year looks to be such a calvacade of horror remakes and sequels (Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween 2, Final Destination 4, House on Sorority Row, The Uninvited, The Stepfather, Last House on The Left, Underworld, Terminator Salvation, etc.) it makes me wonder if originality has gone out of fashion.

that is the problem with having the same producing team produce all the franchise remakes, now were going to get these things one at a time, when Freddy and Friday movies would come out the same year with regularity.

Nice interview. I'd actually thought the same thing about FvJ. Now Platinum is reinventing both characters you can almost see a remake of FvJ happening somewhere down the line. I'm looking forward to more news on the NIGHTMARE remake.

The fact is the "creative" people involved at the studios are not genre fans. Most hate or don't even understand horror. That's why they don't care about original horror. Just give me what worked before and we'll remake it and sucker you fools into forking over the cash. Michael Bay had never seen a Friday the 13th until AFTER he got involved and once he did see them, he responded, "Why are we remaking these pieces of shit?" True story. But you know what? I think the new F13 looks good. Marcus is a good director and I thought Texas was well done. If a remake will give the original some love then where's the hurt? Hatchet calls itself ORIGINAL horror but it's nothing more than F13 in cheap clothing.

This "implied" set up for s sequel...it has me wondering if the "new Jason" will ever have actual supernatural traits, or if he'll be handled like some lucky survivor that somehow keeps licking his wounds and rebounding.

Why do you keep saying 'beyond the break'? The other month it was 'read on fo the skinny'. Wonder what it will be next month

Call me crazy - but if they do a new Nightmare and won't bring back Robert England as Freddy - then I want to see Johnny Depp as Freddy...

I am glad to hear that they will still do freddy vs jason 2 someday and how about this for a storyline. What if freddy found out that elias voorhees was his dad. When elias was in the the nut house for a short time he was one of the 100 maniacs who raped amanda kruger and made her pregnet. Now this would make freddy and jason half-brothers. But the two still hate each other very much and still want to kill each other. Also pamela voorhees has come back from the dead too some how! Just about everyone has there own agenda. The teens, elias, freedy and even pamela! What will happend,How will it end and who will be left standing?

There wont be another Freddy Vs Jason for a long long time. PD wont ruin the characters or sequel chances by remaking a bullshit "let's see who's dick is bigger" fight between them hell if they wanted to they could toss leatherface in there as well. I can't believe one studio now owns the rights to leatherface, jason, and krueger. The only reason they don't have michael and chucky is because the private owners of those characters have kept them in the family. Maybe PD will seek out the Leprechaun next or Candyman or Pumpkinhead.. Unfucking believable. The trailers for this film have moments that mirror alot of the previous sequels in the F13 sega mostly part 4. I'm over my hate for this remake. I hope it's entertaining. I just hope that Nightmare makes the Child Killer Freddy, that wes always implied but never gave us. That and no BEN "goddamn he had a huge fucking head, his temples look like tits" Foster... Depp would be cool but then again how could he play it. Hi voice doesnt sound right for it, but he's a good actor and god only knows how he would find his inner freddy if they gave it to him but he's really tied up right now in other films. Steve Buscemi would be my out there choice, he has a history with Bay, he can play creepy pretty well. I could so buy into him being a child killer/toucher.

I'm reasonably certain that Friday the 13th will do rather well. It actually looks to be a pretty decent film by F13 standards. So I think it will do well. A Nightmare on Elm Street is going to be very tricky though. I really hope they take this seriously and approach it like the psychological, supernatural, suspense, slasher that it is.

Maybe because Illinois is close to Ohio, which is where "Springwood" is located. Though, the look of "Springwood" in the old series will ALWAYS be southern California. ALL the NOES movies were filmed here(with the exception of FvJ, which was in Canada) and they LOOK like they were filmed here! It will be interesting to see what a "Chicago-looking NOES" will look like because despite being set elsewhere, it's a VERY Californian-looking franchise down to the valley layouts and the frequently seen palm trees.

I have always loved the friday the 13th movies, I like the cheeeze, sorry. So I am looking foward to this movie. The one I am looking foward to the most this year though is drag me to hell. I think sam is going to hit it out of the park. Another NOES I am sure is going to be awsome whomever they decide to play freddy though and FVJ2, with the new actors would just be a bonus:) I love this genre and the big movie houses will always fall back on it. Bring on 2009 the year horror makes its big turn!!!!

I am going to see Friday the 13th on opening day and hope it does very well. I would love to see a sequel and the franchise to start up again. We do NOT need another Freddy vs Jason at all! One was one too many. Stick with standalone films.

Lets hope Friday the 13th gets number 1 at the box office. Lets hope. I thought My Bloody Valentine would but it didn't. Was pretty upset about that, lol. Gore needs to get number 1.
