Co-Creators Want Extended Cut of 'Blair Witch'

It is no secret that before Ed Sanchez and Dan Myrick's THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was sold, the film made its rounds through Hollywood as a massive two-and-a-half hour cut (some even said it surpassed three hours). Now on the film's 10th anniversary, the co-creators have opened up about their desire to have Lionsgate release the film in its entirety. Will anyone watch?

There’s plenty of fan interest, though not so much from Lionsgate, but I really would love to put out a two-and-a-half hour version of the movie on DVD; like a Criterion edition with a bunch of extra footage,” Sanchez tells Rotten Tomatoes on the film’s 10th anniversary. “The first time we cut the movie, we knew it was too long — it was about two and a half hours. There’s a lot of good stuff that didn’t make the film. I’m really happy with the film and I think we cut it as well as we could.

So what might we see if an extended cut ever got released?

There’s a great confessional with Mike that didn’t make the movie. He also had this great scene in the woods where he lost his mind, started punching trees, it was really hardcore,” says Myrick. “There’s a really cool poetry reading scene in the hotel they spend the night in where Josh and Mike are duelling with their own poetry. At that point in the film we just had to get them into the woods, so as cool as it was it had to go. They shot so much cool stuff and they rolled on everything. I think we could put together at least another hour of really, really solid footage.

I like the Blair Witch Project. I don't love it, but I like it. An extra hour would be cool if it was hardcore scary stuff that couldn't be shown in theaters.

I'd be down for an extra hour. It is by no means a perfect film, but it is a film that fooled a lot of people and became very popular extremely quick. In the end it was the hype that killed this film for a lot of viewers. I just was not one of them. Release it!

I would watch it.

I liked it quite a bit. I can still remember watching the film when it came out in the theaters and getting freaked out by it. The only thing I hope ISN'T part of this is an extended ending. I really liked the abrupt ending that left you hanging!

BWP is one of the most boring horror movies I've ever seen. An extra hour would just be painful.

I'd watch it. I thought it was well done, and I'd like to see more. Part 2 was an atrocious peice of cow shit. I know no one mentioned it, but every time I think of Blair Witch I remember how stinky awful part 2 was. Really, really bad. Ugh. Bad.

I think this is a pretty cool idea. I haven't seen the film since it first came out and I'd love an excuse to watch it again. They had like 10+ hours of footage before they cut together the theatrical version so... yeah, totally interested.

I actually liked the sequel, so I'm sure my vote doesn't count. I was disappointed by the abrupt ending... not initially, though. I thought it was a great film for a few years, until I saw more effectively filmed faux-documentaries. A whole extra hour - I'm sure there are many folks who will enjoy that but I won't be one of them.

This movie could've been one of the coolest movies ever, but they f'd up by letting the cat out of the bag that it was a mock film. Made it boring once you found out. I remeber watching the scifi special thinking..,.. holy shit, that's scary. Next day I saw the the actors on good morning america or some shite, trying to get work.... wankers.

I love this film, it was very original (Don't bother with the "Cannibal Holocaust" referneces, they were both completely different and both very brilliant films), and I've been waiting for an extended cut since I first heard there was one. I don't know about a 150 minute version, I think they might want to scale it down a little bit (I could stand a 2 hour cut, but any more would be redundant.) I'd be really jazzed about an extended new DVD, but I'd rather the extra footage either be pared down, or presented as an optional alternate version. (Like release a two disc edition, one disc with the theatrical cut, the other with the extended cut.) Either way, a 10th Anniversary re-release would be pretty freakin' awesome.
