Variety just confirmed our exclusive news (without credit of course) that Matthijs Van Heijningen will be directing Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment's The Thing prequel, which comes from a screenplay by Ron Moore. Fingers crossed they run with the prequel plan and avoid turning this into a remake. Beyond the break you can read the official announcement.

The Thing 1982 John Carpenter and Kurt RussellUniversal will add a new chapter to "The Thing," lining up another take on the paranoid horror classic most recently brought to the screen by John Carpenter in 1982.

Studio has set "Battlestar Galactica" exec producer Ron Moore to write the script and commercials director Matthijs Van Heijningen to direct the re-imagining.

New project borrows heavily from the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There," the basis of the Carpenter film and 1951 Howard Hawks original "The Thing From Another World."

It is set in a Norwegian camp and chronicles how the shape-shifting alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp. Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. David Foster will be exec producer.

Van Heijningen has shot blurbs for brands including Toyota, Pepsi, Heineken, Bud Light and Visa. He is also developing "Army of the Dead" at Warner Bros. with producer Zack Snyder, who also crossed from commercials to features by directing the Strike-produced "Dawn of the Dead" remake.

Below is our exclusive look at the synopsis:

In the screenplay by Ronald D. Moore, the prequel takes place from the Norwegian camps point of view. An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realize that an alien life-form with the ability to take over bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

"Who Goes There" was a terrific story and both film versions were awesome. By the way, Hawks produced the first film with his protege Christian Nyby directing, though many postulate that Hawks had a hand in directing, since it bears so many of his trademarks. Anyway, can only hope this new rendering can live up to the standards already set.

I have very mixed feelings about this film. I like the idea of re-visiting the story in prequel form, but on the other hand, I can't help but feel that the isolation and alienation that the first film was filled with, will be all but gone with this film. I hope this isn't going to be over-stylized, and that it is deliberately paced. I also hope that it isn't just a gore fest. Carpenter's film certainly had it's share of carnage, but it was measured and balanced by a well crafted story, and precise, patient direction. I will hope for the best, but expect the worst.

It actually is about time for some more The Thing stuff to hit theaters. Carpenter's The Thing really is a masterpiece. Hopefully this prequel can live up to it.

Norwegian camps point of view? Norwegian camp is dead. I hope they mean the Norwegian camps story of discovering the craft and the resulting terror. Don't redo the remake. They'll screw it up with computer graphics for sure. The only way this can be good is, Norwegian camps story with awesome practical effects. Period. www.impfx.com

If the synopsis didn't include a blow by blow synopsis of the first film as well, maybe I'd be okay with this.

This synopsis is the same as the Carpenter remake ? That would make this a remake , not a prequel. Am I missing something ??

BRILLIANT WRITING!!! TOTALLY ORIGINAL!! An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. I think their synopsis is of JC's 'The Thing', ZOMBIERAPEBONANZA. But it does say "Exclusive Synopsis", so that's confusing. I'm glad they're going with the prequel plot of the "Swede's" POV. The only thing that scares me is that this will become a CGI-fest and look really bad like that cartoon werewolf in 'An American Werewolf in Paris.' And, if they include any nods to Carpenter's version, I hope they keep them subtle. By the way, I just saw JC's 'The Thing' at a private screening in an old one-screen theater last week. Awesome print! I thought I would add that to make all of you jealous!

Great! I love the originality of this. Because watching the events that destroyed the Norwegian camp will be sooo interesting. Oh, wait, among the Norwegians will be McReady's brother! How about that!!! Personally I suggest they take this a step further and bring McReady's sexy sister!!! Come on Hollywood you can screw this better than that!

A Norwegian storyline, practical effects and a tripod - that's all I ask for.

we don't need a prequel

hmm I also have mixed feelings about this prequel...it's an interesting concept to take on the norwegian perspective but could that mean the film will be plagued with subtitles or fake accents? John Carpenters The Thing was awesome because all the effects were done practically...if the use cgi...this film could be really bad but who knows as of now how good or bad i will look

They still don't seem to be able to decide what this movie is going to be. The synopsis is literally the first 20 minutes of the original, but they keep saying how its from the Norwegians point of view. You would think someone from the project would end the madness with a definitive answer.

there are actually three film versions, the great Horror Express starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee was also loosely based on the same story. Not to mention the episode of the X-files

I'm soooo glad John Carpenter's The Thing is now widely regarded as a horror masterpiece, because it sure didn't get any love during its initial run. I know. I was there! Anyway, I welcome a prequel. If it sucks, we still have the original and the remake. No biggie.

This is sounding like a remake . Oh well had to happen.

That's interesting. If they ever made a sequel it would be more interesting cause would it be a sequel to the game that was a sequel to the movie or would it be a sequel to the movie and just forget about the game which was the sequel to the movie in the first place. At any rate,I like to see what their gonna do with it and maybe Kurt could have a cameo part in the prequel.

I still don't get what the high buzz is for a prequel of "The Thing". For me, there would be no fear factor - everyone dies, I'd know that. So what's there to look forward to? Yes, there would be amazing special effects, but it's not like I'm watching the prequel to "how Darth Vader became Darth Vader"... I'd just be watching a story of how many individuals die very expectedly. Wow, yay for that one, can't wait for that predictable mess...
