Rumor: 'Machete' a Priority For Weinstein Company

Although we can't confirm the news, it is nice to hear rumblings around town. We're being told that Weinstein Co. has serious plans on shooting Robert Rodriguez's highly anticipated Machete later this year. Starring Danny Trejo, Machete was introduced to us as a faux trailer in Dimension Films' GRINDHOUSE, which bombed at the box office back in April of '07. In the trailer it was revealed that after being betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale (Trejo) launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss. No word on if this would go theatrical or direct-to-DVD.

Haha I almost forgot about that! If they seem that interested in producing it, they might consider theatrical...Couldn't imagine news breaking about a DTV project...Grindhouse bombed? I remember it making top 10 that weekend with 7 mil..Sure, it's not amazing but Grindhouse wasn't a complete failure...

A priority? I would love to believe that but time will tell. I've been waiting for this since I saw the trailer in the middle of Grindhouse then heard buzz that they actually greenlit it.

This would be awesome. I liked Grindhouse. I'm not sure why it bombed. The mainstream people just didn't seem to be into it. MACHETE might do better as a DVD release. I don't really know how many people would support this style of action flick.

This would still be pretty sweet to see. I can't bring myself to buy "Grindhouse" on Blu-ray or DVD unless it's the 3-hour version. Does anybody know what happened to the "Cowgirls from Sweden" trailer QT was said to make for the movie?

SWEEt, pretty sad that something started as a joke is actually better than most stupid ass movies out there today

Machete as a "priority?" Are they really that desparate?

Would love to see Machete go theatrical. DVD would work too as long as it is done by RR & Danny. Can't really see Rodriguez involved in a direct to dvd project, though. Loved Grindhouse & would certainly hope the theatrical version w/ all ads and trailers will see dvd release as well. For that matter, would love to see a full length Werewolf Women of the SS.

Machinegunrap, I don't think Cowgirls was actually filmed; didn't get beyond the idea stage. Like you, I eagerly await the Grindhouse 3 hr version on dvd, though Death Proof in particular is awesome to see in extended version as well.

I don't think people actually are thinking about it when they say this will be great...see the faux trailer is great, as were all the grindhouse trailers. However, as Planet Terror proved, an intentionally bad full length film is still a bad, full length film. The grindhouse concept works in trailers and short burts, but not as full on films.

I am glad to hear something good about this. Last I heard was that it was cancelled.

first off Grindhouse bombed because of tarantino's movie, it was a joke. Honestly i think they both should be criticized for their efforts, both movies were not close to "real" grindhouse flicks, but i would be super pumped if they did Machete. the trailer looked badass

Sadly, "Zodiac" and "Grindhouse" came out around the same time and BOTH of them ended up bombing domestically. I can't remember what did well during the first quarter of 2007, but if it was "Epic Movie" that broke #1 over "Grindhouse" and "Zodiac", it wouldn't really surprise me.

Grindhouse only bombed because it was terribly marketed and was released on Easter weekend. Most movie audiences had no idea what to expect of the movie and kept thinking the wrong things about it.

dont forget that the grindhouse brand has been all over cable and the the dvd's did well. this can be done cheap and will clean up among Latinos. I can't wait to see it. I am curious to see if they market this as Grindhouse Presents: Machete or just Machete. They could have a great recurring stream of income if they kept the Grindhouse brand going.

Obviously Grindhouse did not fail to break through due to Death Proof, though it is quite fashionable to trash that film at this point. Rather, it did not do what they had hoped it would do, financially, due to its ground-breaking & unique approach. Most people do not recall the double feature motif and were confused by the whole concept. Once again, Americans have trouble with the unusual and daring when it comes to movies. Grindhouse goes down while Paul Blart Mall Cop is seen as a huge success. Go figure. But I really believe that Grindhouse is the kind of film that will stick around & be viewed and talked about for years to come.

Hope this actually comes out. I would rather want to see thanksgiving or werewolf women of the S.S turned into feature films though

No doubt, that THANKSGIVING trailer was awesome. My other fav was MACHETE. Back to Grindhouse, I thought PLANET TERROR was alot better than DEATH PROOF. DP had some great scenes, but it really had a long drag space with nothing going on. I would agree that poor marketing and release time probably did it in. But also, it's such an old school 70's vibe that has a really narrow core audience that thinks that style is awesome.

best news i've ever heard today!!robert rodriguez is great!, but he has to stop doing that crappy kid films, and start doing the films he's good at, and Machete is going to be BADASS!!

This news is very telling. It tells me there's still room for H-wood to sink below the remake-o-rama. Pure suckage this will be.

Just my opinion, which carries no more weight than any other, but I found Death Proof to be so much better than Planet Terror, which I also loved. I could never think of periods during which QT is developing awesome characters through dialogue that is so perfectly pitched it is almost like listening to music as drag time. For me Stuntman Mike is one of the all-time greats. QT acting as his own DP couldn't have been more impressive. Again, I don't think the film's release was mishandled so much as the audience was not open to the presentation. That would seem to be why the next move was to split them in two. In any event, hope to see the theatrical version released soon.

Hey Jonny Horror, know what you mean about Death Proof; many people I know found it pretty heavy on the talk, but I dug that. It's all just personal taste, right? Have you seen the expanded DP or just the one in Grindhouse? You might give extended version a try; it was pretty cool, though still heavy on the dialogue.
