Horror Continues to Thrive at Box Office!

Early last week I wrote about the box office boom that has kicked off the New Year. After the success of THE UNBORN and MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D, things have yet to slow down as Sony Screen Gems' Underworld: Rise of the Lycans just missed out taking the top spot in this weekend's box office. The third entry in the franchise took in an estimated $20.7m just behind PAUL BLART's $21.5. It's quite possible when the actual numbers come in that UNDERWORLD will take the #1 spot, but either way this is a solid opening for a horror film released with minimal advertising and also being the third film in a franchise. I think it's safe to say a fourth is on the way... and for all of you who are quick to proclaim horror dead, think again. Don't forget to write your own review of the films and tell all of B-D what you think.

Add to this the respectable $10 mil MBV pulled in this weekend and the equally respectable $4 mil taken in by THE UNBORN and horror is off to a great start in 2009. THE UNINVITED figures to drop the ball a little, although the latest ad push (spots featuring crowd reactions and a lot of "You won't believe the ending!" comments) might generate enough buzz for decent numbers in what is normally a down weekend for box office. FRIDAY THE 13TH should, of course, kill in a few weeks. Justin, good horror is hardly dead. If a thousand bad or mediocre movies come out in a year and only one decent one, that decent one is no less effective or memorable. The only thing about horror that is apparently dead is the enthusiasm of many of the people who claim to love it. Sad, considering that the genre's recent box office success should open the door for a lot more horror films to get made and released.

I agree horror is hardly dead!! It's us faithful fans that keep it alive! I never write off a horror movie till I have seen it because I have been surprised alot. I just seen Underworld 3 and it was awesome not as good as 1 and 2 but still good. My bloody Valentine was one of the best slashers I have seen in a very long time! I CAN'T wait for Friday the 13th, it is going to kick ASS!!!

If anyone calls horror dead when last year or two brought us Rec, Cloverfield, The Mist and Ruins among others, you are at least semi-retarded.

Horror has just taken a nose-dive, that's all. Horror is just lacking an influx of creativity. There are a lot of cookie cutters out there. I was hoping that Cloverfield would bring us more (fresh) monster movies. I was hoping that Silent Hill would bring bring aesthetic beauty into horror. Since horror has grown so large over the past 6 or 7 years, companies are just trying to pump from the same well to ensure large pay days. Most of the great horror movie of he past few years have been Independent in my opinion. No one works harder than an independent with no budget. A movie like Zombie Diaries (no budget, no "names") should not be better than Resident Evil. The horror market just feels to monopolized and results in an environment that in not condusive to freethinking up-and-comers. B-D should do a little research project by comparing how many R horror films were released in theaters compared to PG-13.

I'm sorry, but I really don't feel that the 'Underworld' franchise belongs under the horror umbrella. Sure, it features vampires and werewolves, but it is a straight action franchise, with absolutely no effort made to elicit scares (which is something that even ham-fisted, PG-13 remakes attempt to do, albeit unsuccessfully).
