This afternoon we were among the first press ever to witness footage from McG's Terminator Salvation, which arrives in theaters May 22. While a full report is forthcoming, we did get our hands on some important information about the film, including the direction of the franchise and whether or not we might see the return of Linda Hamilton to the fight. You can read all about it beyond the break.
After an impressive taste of what's to come in the fourth TERMINATOR film, McG took to the audience for questions.
One reporter drilled the director about the rumor that Linda Hamilton was approached to return as Sarah Connor (the mother of John Connor, the future leader of the human survivors) in SALVATION.
After chuckling to himself a bit, he asked the audience to show hands if they'd like to hear old tape recordings of Sarah Connor in the opening and ending of the film, keeping to the tradition of the TERMINATOR spirit. When the majority raised their hands, he literally flicked off the producer (in a joking manner). He did tease that it could be something we see in the final cut of the film...
On the exclusive news front, our questions wasn't answered so we hit up McG in the lobby of the DGA, where the event took place.
Something that has been bugging this journalist for years is that the TERMINATOR franchise appears to have no end. Like many time travel films before it, the situation appears to loop over and over again. The Terminators will keep sending back more robots to kill John or Sarah, while in the future they'll keep fighting to stop it.
When originally announced, it was said that SALVATION would kick off a brand new trilogy, meaning that there are three films planned. We asked McG that while working out the timeline and story for SALVATION if they also figured out how to tie it all together and end the franchise... for good.
His response, "Yes, we have. The films will all button up at the end of three."
He also explained that obviously he can't guarantee all three films will ever get made, or that he'll return, but that in the end it'll all come together and end the franchise once and for all.
I told him if it never gets made, we'll have to hunt him down to find out the finale. Can you imagine if "Lost" got canceled? Yikes...
Arriving in theaters May 22, SALVATION is about John Connor (Christian Bale), now in his 30s and soon to be wife Kate Brewster realize they must create a resistance organization with Earth's remaining survivors against the army of robots slowly being built up by Skynet. As they are building this resistance, one survivor happens to be a traitor in disguise, and has a secret that nobody would ever come to suspect.
What's to tie up? We've already seen the future, where Skynet's final gamble is to send a bunch of Terminators into the past at various points in the Connors' lives and we've already seen how John Connor finally defeats Skynet and sends a few good guys into the past to counteract them. Judgement Day happens, but humanity finally prevails. Everything else is just part of what is essentially one big Grandfather Paradox, isn't it?
I would have to respectfully disagree on Lost. While Season 2 was a big meandering mess of plot contrivances that nearly made me stop watching. And Season 3 part 1 was 8 episodes of FAIL. The show course corrected with Season 3 part 2. That was when the show aired for the first time Non Stop (ala 24) in January. It was faster paced, more interesting, and ended with a game changing finale. Season 4 came a year later and continued the trend. The reason "Lost" lost it's way in Season 2 was ABC's fault. They wanted to drag the show out while the creators wanted to nail down an end date. No that the show has a definite end date (in 2 16 episode seasons) it's been on a roll. And with the elimination of flashbacks for Season 5, expect an even better show. I'm no obsessed fan like Doc Jensen, but I enjoy it for it's entertainment (and high production values for a television program). As for Terminator, I don't care that it's Joseph McGinty Nichol directing this thing, I'm still going to see it. It looks better than that stupid Wolverine trailer.
I think they should completely fuck up the series by having Bale play Patrick Bateman as this mass chaos breaks out around him. "That's a very nice chardonay you're not drinking" then he rapes and kills a robot.
I'm all up for a new Terminator trilogy, everything I've heard and seen looks great. I'm not a fan of the series though. I'm also not a fan of LOST at all, it's gross the way it's been churned out to make money despite the fact its writers clearly had no idea where it was going. There are incredible scripts out there waiting to be realised, it is criminal that so much time, talent and money has gone into creating that messy overdrawn show.
It's evident the people bashing Lost have only seen a few episodes and then gave up on it. People who watch it regularly and know the storyline say much of the opposite. The show has fun mystery, Sci-Fi twists, and the best cast of characters seen in years. And who said it HAS to "know where it was going"? It's Gilligan's Island meets Fantasy Island! Part of the fun is just watching to see what happens next...not dwelling on how it's all going to end.
I really hope the movies have nothing to do with the show, what a piece of crap, even while I thought it was bad I watched it up to a few episodes into season 2 and it just got so bad and dramatic (if i wanted a soap opera i'd watch days of our lives) that I couldn't watch anymore, such embarrassing garbage.
So we can expect more of bale shouting at crew members..AWESOME!
