Vampire, Werewolves.... the TWILIGHT franchise is in fact horror, no debate necessary. So thus continues our coverage of the second adaptation, New Moon, which is aiming for release November 20, 2009. Today the first official casting news came in for the film, which will now be helmed by Chris Weitz (replacing Catherine Hardwicke). Read on to see who will be in search of virgin blood.
Fans can rejoice as the werewolf will not morph (into a new actor) as after much speculation and consternation among online fans of "Twilight," Summit and director Chris Weitz said Wednesday they will bring back Taylor Lautner to play the werewolf Jacob Black in "Twilight" sequel "New Moon."
The character has a relatively minor role in the first pic but a significantly larger one in the second, as he develops a romantic relationship with female protagonist Bella (Kristen Stewart).
With the Jacob character looking older and bulkier in "New Moon" as he goes through physiological changes, there had been reports that Lautner may be replaced. The actor was said to be gaining weight as part of his bid to keep the part.
Coincidentally, Robert Pattinson himself also faced some backlash from the fan community when he was first brought on to play Edward, with some saying he was actually too bulky for the part.
Still, it's unclear how big Lautner's role will be in the new movie, which is being fast-tracked to come out in November. While the role of Edward is considerably smaller in the "New Moon" novel, the script is expected to boost his role to allow for more screentime for Pattinson, who is seen as key to the success of "Twilight."
Weitz, who came on to helm the second pic after Summit and Catherine Hardwicke could not reach an agreement, acknowledged the size issue but said Lautner was ultimately the best choice.
"The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series," Weitz wrote in a letter posted on author Stephenie Meyer's Web site. "But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob."
Here's the official synopsis: In NEW MOON, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.
Okay I can pass this piece of information to my younger sis, she is all about Twilight these days and she was angry at all the talks that he was going to be replaced. LOL
"Excited beyond belief" about Tom Cruise in a horror movie and now more Twilight love? It is becoming abundantly clear that Mr. D likes a dick firmly and repeatedly placed in his pg-13 asshole.
I don't care what anyone says. Twilight IS NOT horror! The Twilight I saw had no blood (except for a cut hand) , gore, suspense, terror, or anything horror related in it except that the characters were vampires. The 'vampires' didn't even have fangs for fucks sake.
HOW IN THE BLUE FUCK IS TWILIGHT HORROR? WHAT THE FUCK HORRIFYING HAPPENS IN THE BOOKS? NOT A FUCKING THING!!!!! BY MR D'S DIPSHIT EMOLOGIC THE OLD LIVE ACTION GHOST BUSTERS TV SHOW WITH LARRY STORCH IS HORROR, IT HAD VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES, GHOSTS, THE FRANKENSTIEN MONSTER, ECT.. MUST HAVE BEEN BALLS TO THE WALL HORROR...
"Twilight" is NOT horror. I have plenty of friends who enjoyed the books and film and even agreed "Twilight" is NOT horror in the slightest. You have to be kidding...
I'm sorry, twighlight is part of the horror genre.
The problem you guys are having is that it's not an 18 rated gorefest- it's rooted in the very foundations of the horror genre.
And as for the guy who said horror is ''intense and profound fear'- sure thats the definition of the word but NOT the genre. if that was the case, how many films are truly intense and profoundly scary? Not many- if thats your only measuring stick, there's about ten true horror movies in the whole world!
You guys are just two narrow in your thinking- it's not scary but its roots are in the very myths and traditions of the horror genre. It doesn't go for the scares, but that doesn't mean its not part of the genre- you just need to have more common sense and think about it.
And cathedral: well you are good at twisting the truth. Mr D said he is excited the the prospect of Joss Whedon (who most genre fans know is a brilliant writer who added much to the genre with Buffy and Angel) teaming with the writer of the excellent cloverfield, drew goddard.
But don't let the fact he's excited abotu two of the best talents in the genre today get in the way of your silly little rant.
saying this is horror is like saying "goosebumps" is right up there with "tales from the crypt." just because it has vampires, doesnt make it horror. i dont care how many cheesey, "rooted" themes its had, it was a teen vampire love story. and i agree with mr. willson, ask anyone over the age of 15 and they will tell you its not horror.
I wanna know, when they released the direct to DVD movies of The Chipmunks Meet The Wolfman and The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein, did Bloody-Disgusting cover that, as well. I mean, those movies, despite being cartoons(like El Superbeasto, which is covered whenever new tidbits are released), have horror roots not unlike Twilight. I mean, BD DID report about Coralline and Where The Wild Things Are. Just wondering. :)
As for Twilight itself, I think girls like it because it mirrors their own horrible fanfics. Y'know, the ones they write about them being wisked away one of the Jonas Brothers. Unicorn dreams and sparkle moments. All that fairy farting crap. Though after giving Twilight a read out of curiosity to WHY so many girls like it, it just came off as a REALLY bad vampire myth inspired fanfic. REALLY bad one. I think there are some 14-year old girls with High School Musical bed sheets that actually could write better tripe than all the Twilight books put together!
This thread wouldn't have started so much vitriol if Mr. D wasn't so clearly self conscious about posting it in the first place. By saying "no debate necessary" he is making it clear that he knows the debate is going on, and that's his lame attempt at quashing it.
Look, guys. We all understand this site, along with the other big horror sites, is just a corporate shill looking to squeeze every last hit out of Google so they can continue to churn out a mediocre site on a day to day basis. If you don't like it, don't visit and give them hits. That's the only way to change things.
Twlight is a teen movie. NOT HORROR!!! I guess they wanted to make a movie for younger viewers. The bad thing is they have been doing that a lot lately. I'll stick to my rated R's thank you very much!!
I agree that Twilight is like Chicken soup for the teen emo soul. Not really what BD is catering to is it? Leave the Twilight bull for the "Teen beat" sites.
If having a vampire and a werewolf in your story is enough for it to be automatically classed as horror, BD should also try keeping us up to date with 'Being Human', which features a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost. Oh, except it's a sitcom, of course.
With a name like Bloody Disgusting you expect it to live up to it, not lose it's balls for this tweeny booper crapola. Should change the name of this site to Mildly Distasteful.
Twilight is half and half cuz vampires is part of the horror genre. But in this movies its towards teenie boppers so they wont go towards blood, guts and everything else that has to do with horror.
It just didnt show the "horror" in it.
So whateves.
Ok so let me get this straight...
If LAGUNA BEACH introduced a Vampire character and then a Werewolf and they both were working the same job but didnt like each other, would that be horror? Seems like a YES to some people.
the word HORROR is fading away.
theres what you can call Twilight.. "LIKE OMG HORROR"
JSPOOLE, I agree with you. I cannot take any of you nagging old farts into serious account when you think Twilight is crap but Repo is brilliant. UGH. Have you all lost your fucking way? I did not see twilight, I have no desire to, but not every movie on earth has to be made for the ppl in YOUR age group. You were 15 once too, and as we all know how fast time flies by, it wasn't THAT long ago either. You ppl, society in general, need to stop trying to pick on the younger generation because all you do is prove your own ignorance and end up looking and acting just like the horrid adults did when you were younger. Why would anyone want that? Pick on the kids of today right, because we all know the kids of yesterday and the day before were soooooooo much better. Remember, those are the ppl running our country now, not so impressive. You want things to change in this world, change your fucking train of thought and wake up, you'll be able to appreciate a range of other things in life.
