Some interesting news comes courtesy of Eli Roth MySpace blog. According to the writer/director, Showtime will be playing a brand new transfer of Hostel: Part II, which hit theaters back in June of 2007. Beyond the break you can read all about it from Berlin where Roth is starring in Quentin Tarantino's INGLORIOUS BASTARDS.
Eli writes:
"Tonight on Showtime at 7:00 (PST, check local listings), at long last, is Hostel Part II. I have kept quiet about this, but I was heartbroken about the DVD transfer. Something happened somewhere down the technical chain of command that made the film look much darker and contrasty than the film was ever supposed to look. The skin tones are off, and the blood looks too black. It somehow got "double lutted" or something, it's the only way to explain it technically, and this happened while I was overseas, so it never got caught. It's not how it looked in cinemas, and it's been torturing me that this is the only version out there. It was just a technical error and Sony was very apologetic and and let me re-transfer the film so that you can see the background, with corrected skin color and most importantly, corrected blood color.
As of right now there's no plans to re-issue the DVD or Blu Ray, perhaps at some point in the future, but right now this is the best way to see the film. Sony Home Video did reassure me that if they do reissue the film that fans will be able to swap out their DVDs and Blu Rays for a new one. I was adamant about that, and they agreed fans should not have to buy the film twice. It was just human error in the manufacturing. But as I said, right now there are no plans for a new one. Hopefully that will change, and I will certainly keep you posted if it does.
Now, since I'm in Berlin I can't actually be there in the U.S. to watch it and make sure that the corrected version is the one that made it to cable,( although Sony Home Video assured me it was.) So if you guys see it please let me know if there's a difference between what runs on cable and the version you have on DVD.
well I didn't get the dvd because in Germany there is no Uncut version of the movie itself. It's cool that Sony will give US buyers a replacemeant whenever they will bring another release of the film.
What a strange situation. Glad to hear it's being cleared up, couldn't stand the first Hostel but found part II to be a fairly good time.
Every news story should be accompanied by a naked woman soaked in gore. Even stock market reports.
I didn't even like Hostel. I was so excited when it came out. It sucked!! The ending was the best part. So I just had no interest in seeing the second one.
Whatever, I liked the Hostel movies. I watched it last night on Showtime with a friend whom never saw it. He is also a horror fan and thought Hostel was more gore than horror. He may be right, but still good movies.
I can understand disliking Hostel 2, but alot of these comments I see about Eli Roth, and the first Hostel, and Cabin Fever... Either alot of the people on this site are TERRIFIED to be associated with mainstream media(your opinion of it anyway) or you have HORRIBLE taste in horror flicks.
You can stroke your dvd's of "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Zombi" all you want, but theyre as mainstream as Hostel is, sorry to burst your bubble.
To this day the hate for Cabin Fever and both Hostel films baffles the fuck out of me. Great horror films IMO.
I noticed the dark transfer on my Hostel Part II DVD. I hope they reissue it soon.
People complain about remakes, Directors, Storylines, Acting..etc. Did everybody forget these are Horror movies were talking about, We should ALL be happy they still make as many as they do!
I would rather they make none if this is the best they can do.
