When was the last time you've seen The Crow, Dimension Films' adaptation of the incredible comic book created by James O'Barr? Sure it only came out 14 years ago (holy crap time flies), but as shocking as it might sound, this Brandon Lee thriller is already extremely dated (in my humble opinion). Should it be remade? Probably not, but there's nothing we can do about it, so it's time to get over it and read on for the details (nothing surprises me anymore) and to see what the exact visual plans are for this remake. Tell us all what you think by commenting below, good or bad remake idea?
THE CROW will fly again as Stephen Norrington, who directed "Blade", has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of “The Crow,” based on the comic created by James O’Barr.
Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.
Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.
For Norrington, “The Crow” deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero “Blade,” Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since.
Norrington said he felt demoralized by that experience, and the accomplished sculptor spent the next five years writing and working on his art. He made a deal to direct “Clash of the Titans” for Warner Bros., but left the project, he said, because he was “unable to excite Warner Bros. with my take, or influence the screenplay to any comfortable extent.” That pic goes into production early next year with Louis Leterrier at the helm.
Norrington resolved to focus on independent projects, and sparked to an approach on “The Crow” from Relativity production chief Tucker Tooley and Pressman. Norrington had a relationship with Pressman when they came close to making “Mutant Chronicles” several years ago. Both embraced Norrington’s vision of the antihero, which Norrington said will be different than the film Proyas made.
“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,” Norrington told Daily Variety.
I love 'The Crow' and I don't think it needs a remake. The movie is still very effective. But this sounds like Norrington is planning a Batman Begins-like reinvention. The sequels to the first movie never did it justice, so... much like in the story Eric Draven is getting a second chance to live again, and I'm certainly interested to witness the resurrection.
I liked the crow series, until wicked prayer came out and that pretty much killed the franchise for me.
I would like to see a remake, I hope Norrington's vision will spark a new cult classic.
I was never a big fan of the original.
Not that it was bad, it just did not do much for me. RIP Brandon Lee. A terrible tragedy. Maybe a remake can make it more edgy, who knows. I hope they mention Brandon in some sort of tribute at the end and pay some respect.
Loved the original but I dont think it's dated, it still rocks , hard. Don't want to see a direct remake but a fresh new story would be good. Let's not forget how awful the sequels are and Norrington is a good choice for director. His Blade was a great movie so we know he can handle comic book material. My only worry is the "documentary style ". The Crow is GOTH!
freaked out man. I just picked up The Crow on blu ray the other day (sweet by the way) and was seriously thinking, "bet this get's remade soon!"...and here it is. I'm keen to see a new crow flick...it's a series that has not seen full potential yet. Big fan of BLADE...so here is hoping Norrington rocks it!
In my opionion i don't think it should be remade. There's only one person who actually played the part perfectly and that was brandon lee. It would be a shame if they remade it. Never asked the fans if they will like a remake. they always just go ahead and do it. What a slap in a face. I guess its just the industry way of doing things.
This really confuses me. I love The Crow [comic / movie], but all the sequels just re-used the plot. If another movie has to be made it has to be a re-make, but not sure where they are trying to go [Guy who made ‘Blade’ doing “almost documentary-style”?] Will Jason Statham be playing ‘The Crow’? That should destroy almost any connection to the original.
They are letting the same asshole who ruined "The League Of Extrodinary Gentlemen" do this? BIG MISTAKE! And will someone please tell him that documentary-styled movies tend to blow.
It doesn't matter at this point. It's going to be done and more importantly, if you read the commentary, the director seems to feel some remorse about how "League..." went.
He's going to do the movie, so let's just deal with it and see what happens....
Hollywood is so lame and can't be original. Now it's "reboot the franchise" and "re-imagine". That's all I hear. Besides, The Crow is untouchable! Foreign horror!!!
I hope that when it gets remade Brandon Lee REALLY does come back from the dead and exacts revenge upon everyone involved with this stupid dumb-fuck idea.
Oh dear. This is NOT a good idea, and this is coming from someone who even enjoys City of Angels and Salvation quite a bit. But the original film is almost hallowed ground to many people. The idea of remaking that, especially "documentary" style?! It hurts to think about it, a lot. When I hear about a remake that I'm against, it usually just makes me angry. This genuinely hurts to even think about.
no--- to the crow!...it has a following and a memory attached. the ONLY other sequel that I actually ENJOYED and was glad they made it..was the one that most people probably didnt like at all.. The 4th one with Edward Furlong. I really liked that story and visual look at it.
YES-- to the Clash of the Titans..that will be awesome. its old enough, that its due a good remake..
the crow does not need a remake. it was good as it was.
The original Crow was a great but flawed film that will be forever remembered more for the tragic death of Brandon Lee than for the movie itself. The sequels have all been on the shoddy side. Why not start over and explore this great story again? It's no more disrespectful of Brandon Lee than Curse Of Frankenstein was to Boris Karloff- just another take on the story.
.......really......really....a remake of the crow. come on now. isn't anything sacred anymore? The crow is one of the best movies of all time, in my opinion. Brandon Lee, can not ever be replaced. I really think it should be left alone. All I have to say is that they better now mess this up, or there are going to be alot of depressed and angry fans out there.
