Bloody-Disgusting learned this evening that Starz! has officially acquired the rights to Rob Zombie's animated flick The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, which means the film could go theatrical through Anchor Bay Entertainment before getting a DVD/Blu-ray release. Directed by Mr. Lawrence and Carey Yost, the film features voices by Paul Giamatti, Tom Papa, Sheri Moon Zombie, Brian Posehn, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Danny Trejo, Geoffrey Lewis and Tom Kenny. The 2-D animated comedy follows the exploits of a washed-up Mexican wrestler, El Superbeasto, in the mythic world of Monsterland.

They should do a (limited? or wide if they advertise well enough)theatrical release so they can get good reviews so they can then use quotes on the dvd box so people will take it seriously when they see it on the wall at blockbuster...

I don't understand the Starz! and theatrical release connection... Starz! is a cable channel that only airs movies, but what does that have to do with theatrical releases?

Actually, Starz LLC is a conglomerate that is owned by Liberty Media. It owns Starz Entertainment (which produces television programs and operates their numerous pay-tv channel) and Starz Media (which produces and releases mostly films and owns companies such as Anchor Bay). So if Starz has bought this, they are most likely going to release it via Anchor Bay Entertainment. The whole thing is very similar to say Viacom. Viacom is a mega corporation that owns such subsidiaries like Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks SKG, while it also owns channels such as MTV, The N and Spike. It's all kinda complicated, but in the end, Starz obtaining this movie definitely connects to it getting a theatrical release. I hope I cleared it up at least a little...
