UPDATE: Catherine Hardwicke Fired From 'Twilight' Sequel

UPDATE: Click here for the official "PC" announcement... B-D reader 'Garret' just sent us in a breaking story over at Deadline Hollywood, who reports that Catherine Hardwicke won't return to direct New Moon, the second adaptation in the four book Twilight series. In fact, they report that Hardwicke was fired by Summit Entertainment! This is shocking news to me as the only reason I found TWILIGHT worthy of a viewing was Hardwicke's stamp on the adaptation, which is nearing $160m worldwide as this article is being written. Beyond the break you can read all about the real reasons for the firing before the trades spin the story in a "nice" way.

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports:

"The word from inside Summit is that Hardwicke, the acclaimed Thirteen director, "was 'difficult' and 'irrational' during the making of Twilight," one insider explains to me. "That doesn't mean anything when you're talking about a filmmaker because they all are, but still..." (Indeed, Joe Roth and Sony kept saying those things about Julie Taymor on Across The Universe. Yet she made a cult classic and is now directing Marvel/Sony's Spider-Man for Broadway.) From another of my sources, "Summit didn't like her. They're saying the DP [director of photography] Elliot Davis is the one responsible for the film's sumptuous visual look, that the editor Nancy Richardson had to save the film in post-production, and Summit thought Hardwicke's [CAA] agent Beth Swofford was alternately ineffectual and hysterical [when it came to controlling her client]."

In fact, I'm told that the studio has even had quiet talks with other CAA directors for the last week. "And Swofford never told Hardwicke about that and that she was about to get kicked to the gutter," an insider tells me. "To add insult to injury, Hardwicke can now look forward to being grilled by the press for days on end, in front of the cast, about why she's getting shit-canned."
"

If anything, Hardwicke saved the movie from its trite plot and ridiculously cheap budget. Where's the love?

I think it's clear. Mean can be assholes, but whena women takes charge she is a bitch. That's why there are so little female directors in Hollywood.

The film was bad. Part of the reason it was bad was Hardwicke. Summit got themselves into this by hiring someone who clearly wasn't qualified enough to begin with. Now when they hire a man to direct the sequel, which we all know is gonna happen, they will be seen as sexist. IMHO, the series probably needs more testosterone in it.

I thought the direction in Twilight was crap. I didn't know a woman directed it and didn't care. Everyone was flat...didn't believe the love story and thought a stronger director like Ang Lee could have really made this thing epic.

Summit just sent out a press release: SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 - Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit's targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke's required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON. "I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON," said Hardwicke. "Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel-- it is a great story." "Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects," said Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production. "We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch."

After the fangirl obsession in school, I want to throw up every time I hear the title. Now I can just laugh at them all.

The film was horrible, Hardwicke did a terrible job...but its bull shit the way summit has gone about this...Catherine did not deserve to be fired as she wasnt the only reason why the film was horrible(even though she really did a fucking terrible job directing it) the script was horrendous as was the EDITING and ACTING and the rest of the whole goddamned film. really nobody shouldve been fired they shouldve just not made a sequel(s)

Should I really care what the financiers of one of the worst teen angst Anne Rice knock offs have to say about this director? Bloody-Disgusting has wasted more than enough time on this franchise when it has about as much to do with real horror as Monsters Inc. How about reporting on the Hellraiser blu-ray from Anchor Bay or the US DVD release of Four Flies on Grey Velvet instead?

Please stop reporting on this movie, this is not why I come to this site. This movie is beyond reprehensible to me. Just ignore it and maybe it will go away.... I doubt it though. Sigh.

Is Mr. Disgusting a 13 year old girl? I mean isn't that who this "Tripelight" thing is for?

i saw this cause my girl wanted too and actually felt icky walking in with all the super happy little people all around me -- it was just dumb, formulaic and without having read the books think it was boring as hell.

Yay a new director for the sequel! Yay!... Who the hell cares?!

When it comes down to it you can be as good at your job as you like, but if act like a total cunt with the people you're supposed to be working with they won't stand for it. I'm glad she got fired, she sounds like a nightmare to work with.

laobuddy4life2
3:40pm, December 8, 2008

Well, personally, I'm glad that she's not working on the next project...I didn't like the feel of Hardwicke's vision. It felt flat and the awkward angle shots were overused in the film. The movie had lots of potential and I hope they find a better director to do the next adaptation.

korollocke
5:35pm, December 8, 2008

the director stinks, thats why the film droped 62% after opening, she fucked the bedtime story for the little girls.

graelignites

Bah, I'm glad, her directing was the one of the few things I though make the film worse. Loved the cinematography, hated her choice in SFX direction. I would be into the film until those cheesy horrible slo mo running and jumping scenes. Better effects in day time television.
