Some remake announcements I just shrug off, some I get excited for, and then some just plain get under my skin. While I am a remake enthusiast, there are some films I consider untouchable, and if a studio is going to remake a film all I ask is that it's different. Universal did throw us a pretty damn good remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD, so maybe a remake of John Carpenter's They Live won't be all that bad? Besides, Zack Snyder's Strike Entertainment is getting involved, which can only mean good things (right?). The story also confirms that Strike is also still planning on remaking THE THING (1982), which is a remake of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951). Read on for the story and chime in on your thoughts below.
"They Live" is finding life again.
John Carpenter's cult 1988 film is getting the remake treatment from Universal and studio-based Strike Entertainment, which are in negotiations to acquire the film rights with rights holder Les Mougins.
Strike's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, while Shep Gordon of Les Mougins and Carpenter will serve as executive producers.
The original film, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. The man races against the clock to find a way to stop them.
The movie is known for a fight scene that lasts 51⁄22 minutes (watch it below) and for the line, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
No writer is on board.
Gordon, an entrepreneur and music impresario who worked with Alice Cooper and Blondie, holds the rights, having financed the film as part of a multipicture deal with Carpenter that also included "Prince of Darkness" and "Village of the Damned." Universal distributed the film as part of an output deal Gordon constructed.
Strike, whose credits include "Bring It On" and "Children of Men," had success in the remake arena with 2004's update of "Dawn of the Dead." Strike is also working on a remake of Carpenter's "The Thing."
Ill say it once and I'll say it again, if they do touch the Thing, the only way it would work is as a direct sequel...but its far to late for that.
As for They Live, I think in the right hands this could actually be a good remake, especially on a grander scale.
I've got to agree with these guys,in the right hands a they live remake would be great< but john carpenter's vision of the thing is untouchable,a remake should not be attempted....
They Live is a classic, and it pains me to imagine it as a shitty, overly-saturated remake that takes itself way too seriously and stars Samuel L. Jackson or something.
Wow. You'd think that Hollywood would learn from the Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog remakes. Not to mention that Zombie's Halloween really divided folks, and the Escape From New York remake is stuck in development hell. I swear, there is little to no originality in the studio system right now. This just makes me sick.
I'm all for a They Live remake as not a lot of people really know about it but please, leave The Thing alone. I only just watched it again a few days ago and there is NOTHING wrong with it.
I recall seeing THEY LIVE, but it's been so long I don't remember what I thought about it. THE THING however is a masterpiece. But once you have remade TEXAS CHAINSAW and HALLOWEEN, anything is possible these days and should not surprise anybody. I still can't believe no studio is talking about remaking JAWS, one of the biggest movies ever? I'll bet it will happen eventually.
Christ finally made an account, crappy set-up, takes ages for anything to update, like avatars and stuffff, anyway blahblahblah hope this ones good blahblah
I am getting the impression that John Carpenter must need money REALLY bad! This movie is a classic! I have hated most of the Carpenter remakes and I know they cannot top the original for this one too!
never seen the original, but it since it has to do with aliens five bucks says that will smith will prob. star in it......(nothing against him). i agree with ya johnny horror i am surprised to that they aint remaking jaws since they practically ruined/remade all of the classics already.
im not for remakes by any means, but dawn was cool and the texas chaisaw remake was alright, but maybe this will be awesome. They Live is one of the movies that i grew up with.
WHO GIVES A SHIT IF THEY ARE REMAKING THE MOVIE. You people are fucking insufferable. If it sucks, then so be it, They Live is sitting on my shelf right now I can watch it any time I want. Stop bitching. If Zach Snyder is involved this has a chance to be pretty decent anyway. Go ahead remake whatever the hell you want. They the same stage play with different actors and crews every year, why can't movies be the same way? Not every year, but every couple decades or so. I mean, no one is going to die from a remake. FUCKING CRYBABIES FOR NO REASON!
Just fixing a typo...They performer the*....also I love They Live by the way. I hope they let Pipper do some kind of side role in this. It would be sooooo awesome!
