Del Toro to Direct Stop-Motion Version of 'The Witches'?!

As a kid one of the creepiest and coolest children's films I watched on a regular basis was The Witches, a big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl's book starring Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch. It was announced back in 2006 that Alfonso Cuaron would direct and Guillermo del Toro would produce a remake of the film, which could easily turn into a mega-franchise (if you've read the book or seen the movie you'll know why). New details have finally surfaced online, which report that producer Guillermo del Toro might direct!

In the original 1990 film a young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse...

Empire got the exclusive low down on Alfonso Cuaron's involvement in THE WITCHES, which would put Del Toro in the director's chair.

"Although it was rumoured that Cuaron was down to direct, it seems that he will instead be producing, while legend-in-the-making Guillermo Del Toro [taking] the helm," reports Empire.

"The pair were discussing the potential of adapting the much naughtier Dahl story Uncle Oswald, when the conversation turned to The Witches. Cuaron told us: 'Guillermo wrote this amazing screenplay really quickly.'

He also said that, 'It won’t be like the original Nicolas Roeg version, which was a beautiful film,' because (and this is the very exciting part), del Toro plans to 'do it completely in stop-motion animation.' We will just have to wait and see how they could ever replace Roeg's army of cross-dressing bald-headed extras, however.
"

the original is a classic! maybe this could work... but remakes will never outshine the orignals!!!

That's cool news. I love the original. What I'd really like to see, though, is an adaptation of Dahl's short story "Pig," which was (in my opinion) his best piece of short fiction.

I think a remake can outshine an original any day as long as the director takes it in a different direction than before. I'm very excited to hear more about this movie! It's an older movie that I for one didn't think it got all the recognition it deserved! =^.^= Keep posting more info on it! I'm very excited.

I'm a big fan of Jan Svankmejer and his use of stop-motion animation but I must be honest, the idea of The Witches going the same way as say Nightmare Before Christmas (a fan I really didn't like) leaves me disappointed. I think this project has great potential as a live action, dark, almost gothic project with Del Toro's unique vision. The idea of the film being remae is not an issue for me, but how it is being done is and while I'm sure i'll be in the minority, I am saddened by this news.

I really hope that Del Toro doesn't become one of those guys that spends more time discussing what they're going to do rather than get on and doing it.

More then 2 years ago in the Pan's Labyrinth panel at the SD Comic-Con Guillermo Del Toro says: "Next i will directed a remake of The Witches, i love this story i will make it darker" People clap and cheers, to all due respect to BD this is not news. And yes this is another one of those Del Toro announces.
