Darkstone Entertainment, the production team behind PLAN 9, the remake of Ed Wood's PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, is prepping a new indie project with director John Johnson. Going into production this Christmas is the first of his series of the adaption of THE DARK TOWER, which i not to be confused with the comic or novel by Stephen King. Read on for more information on the adaptation.
DARK TOWER is based on the original poem by Robert Browning "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" and the English fairytale "Burd Ellen" also known as "Childe Rowland".
Johnson plans to tell a very dark gothic story of a man and his quest to the mysterious Dark Tower set in modern times. Very much in the genre of horror our hero Roland travels through the world of dreams and nightmares to find his lost love and the Dark Tower.
Although this is a very different interpretation than Stephen King's adaption, Johnson is a huge fan of the series of books by King and graphic novels based on the series.
"I've had an obsession with a dark tower in my dreams since I was five years old. Guess it is time to face it in the best way I know how." Says Johnson who is now known for his remake of Plan 9 From Outer Space set for production in March '09.
J.J. Abrams has the film rights to King's Novels (supposedly starting after finishing with Lost in 2010). This film based on the poem may never get picked up for distribution and get dumped direct to DVD if it is even lensed at all.
I'm a huge fan of King vision of the Waste Land series. Now knowing the movie will be bases on the poem is a huge let down.
