You want the good news, or the bad news first? The good news is for fans of Twilight who can go to bed dreaming of a New Moon, the sequel now officially greenlit by Summit Entertainment. The bad news is that you can get ready for another decade of TWILIGHT coverage, as the film took in a disgusting $35.7 million from 3,419 playdates on Friday -- including $7 million from Thursday midnight shows. Whether you like it or not, I think it's safe to say all four books will be making it to the big screen. No word on Catherine Hardwicke's return. Read on for details on the sequel and don't forget you can write your own review of the film.

Fresh from a massive opening day for "Twilight," Summit Entertainment has officially greenlit a "New Moon" sequel.

Summit made the widely expected announcement Saturday morning. "Twilight" generated first-day grosses of $35.7 million from 3,419 playdates on Friday -- including $7 million from Thursday midnight shows.

The vampire thriller's a ready-made franchise for Summit with four books in Stephenie Meyer’s series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

"New Moon" is the second title in the series and is centered on Edward Cullen leaving Bella Swan in order to keep her safe from other vampires. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart play the leads in the film.

"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment," Meyer said in a statement.

"Twilight" had been expected to open in the $50 million to $60 million range, although it looks likely to end up above that.

I saw this opening night with my friends, and I thought it would blow. But I loved it! I never thought I would say this, but I am so pumped for New Moon!

ok, so I thought it looked like shit. I saw it, it wasn't a shit movie, there are far worse, however it's far from a good movie. It was corny as shit, terrible script, insanely bad pacing. I thought the style was pretty good and actually I thought the vampire family was played and written in quite an original way. That being said, anyone like my self who went into this having not read the books and not knowing anything about this Potter ripoff will have a hard time going to the sequel because this movie just didn't do it. Also, this movie is far from BD worthy, it has vampires in it yes, but its not a vampire nor a horror movie, you dont see BD covering Harry Potter even though it has vampires and wolves in it.

Twilight was a big freaking dissapointment!!! It was cheesy as hell, all the serious parts were funny instead of oh I don't know... serious! Catherine Hardwicke sucked at directing this movie, the only thing she got right was edward, it looked like a tv movie and kristen stewart really didn't do well at acting she liked ruined it with her eyes always blinking and her depressed mood throughout the movie, edward was supposed to brighten her!!!!!! Hope the sequal comes with a new director and lead actress...

It's PG-13 emo GARBAGE; of course it's gonna make money. There's no accounting for taste.

The books are horrifically written, riddled with terrible grammar and cliches, but I'm still curious about the film. I think I'll give it a whirl on DVD when it comes out, but I won't bend over backwards to see it at the theater.

A movie intended for trendy poseurs does well? Your kidding! Why is everyone so shocked? Anything lame will do well these days with stupid kids.

Seriously, don't act like you detest this movie after you've been covering the shit out of it. I understand the site is not free to run, so if you chose to do it for revenue then fine. But don't act like Twilight is holding you hostage.

Haven't read the books or watched the movie. Never will. Time to move on.

Hey smalldarkfilms, the HORROR Fans are talking shit on this movie. Mr. D has been a gentleman regarding this huge piece of donkey shit of a movie...it is on this site that I first learned about "Inside" and "Frontiers", and last but not least, REPO! at least we get to speak our fucking minds on this site!

"The bad news is that you can get ready for another decade of TWILIGHT coverage, as the film took in a disgusting $35.7 million" Sounds pretty much in line with what I said. If it's just an unbearable movie, which I have no doubt that it is, stop covering it 24/7. As for speaking your mind, obviously you've never run afoul of Mr. D's personal opinions...

It ended up making a little over $70mil this weekend, is the fourth highest opener of the year and is the fifth highest grossing vampire movie of all time (after only one weekend!).

Fantasy, not Horror. PG-13, not Horror. "All Things Horror" Or "anything we will get paid to cover"?. Garbage.

PuNK45S
1:53pm, November 23, 2008

Since when does PG-13 mean it's not horror? Blood, gore, and excessive use of the word "fuck" don't make a horror movie, grow up.

Worst piece of junk I've ever seen so far in the year. Boring, cheesy as hell, predictable, ridden cliché, bad S/FX, shitty acting, cheap looking ass flick made for tv crap... God, it's so bad they didn't try to show some kind of transformation once they were vampires, not even some stupid teeth!! EPIC FAIL! p.s. guess you've to be a 13 year old female teenager to get it on with this caca fiesta!

niczilla

they aren't suppose to have teeth... but i'll agree with you on everything else.

Darkmotorbreath
2:40pm, November 24, 2008

Ok. This movie was like the battle of the brands, Lacoste vs Diesel(Beisbol scene). Then you have The Monsters meets Degrassi. And at least but not less fucking stupid The sparkly vampires WTF is that??? "I shine like diamonds"

Devils Daughter
1:08pm, November 25, 2008

This movie and it's sucess are exactly what's wrong with Hollywood. A teribble cgi infested, bad acted vampire movie is doing so well while an original kick ass movie like Repo is not even given a chance!

Horrorholic is still using that name even though that other guy on all the other horror and music sites was doing his thing years before and appears on many more sites. At least you could have called yourself Horror"A"holic. Not that I really care but if some other chick started using my Devils Danghter name which I got from an Ozzy song I would at least hope they made it more clear. Yeah I check out too many web sites, I'm an adult actress though so that's my excuse

Everyone who detests this series will just have to realize that this thing will not go away for awhile. As long as twelve to fourteen year old girls are going to the theatres (and reading the books) there is going to be more Twilight movies and more money to be made off of this franchise. Hopefully, in the future someone will make a entertaining horror film that includes vampires who actually have fangs and who aren't just standing around staring at some for a hour into the film.

I agree with the commenter above who said that if you hadn't already read the book, you wouldn't have understood it. Also, I despised the camera work in this film. They need a new director to create better pacing and more creative, yet realistic shots! Really! All of the swirling got on my nerves! Also, I love the role of Kirsten Stewart! She was pretty much what I envisioned Bella to be and the only reason why she didn't do that well in this film was because she was dealing with horrible pacing and tons of awkwardness! On a lighter note, I loved the acting of the entire Cullen family! The only thing that could be changed was Roselie. I imagined her daintier.

Twilight rocked! I read all 4 books 5 times. I can't wait for "New Moon" to come out!
