'Oldboy' Not a Remake, Still....
Friday, November 21, 2008

At the premiere of his movie SEVEN POUNDS, Will Smith explained that the Oldboy he's working on with Steven Spielberg isn't a remake. "We’re looking at that right now," he tells Film School Rejects. "Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film…" I'm sorry, does it make a difference? The problem isn't that they're remaking a masterpiece, it's that Will Smith and Steven Spielberg are remaking a masterpiece. I can't wait to see the PG-13 version of this story....

That's like Rob Zombie saying Halloween was not a remake but a "re-imagining" after he realized he's bashed remakes in the past. Keep Spielberg and Smith away from this! Actually, keep EVERYONE away from this. If there's one movie that doesn't need a remake, it's Oldboy.

I like Spielberg, but I'd rather see him work on JP4. *drools*

For a second there I had hope that they were making a movie that just happened to be named OldBoy and had no connection to the film. But no.....So its not the movie, its the comic they made the movie from....oh, that's totally different. Thanks for settling my mind on this one Smith.

at least Zombie made HALLOWEEN for horror movie fans (like the movie or not, it's STILL a horror movie). I Am Legend is atrocious, awful an insult. i don't even know the story of Oldboy (i never heard of it until now) but keep Smith (yuck) away from this.

djblack, I fail to see your point. Oldboy's not a horror film and you need to see it right this instant.

Someone, anyone... ! If you're planning to go off the deep end sometime soon, going all postal and shit, could you please take down Spielberg and Smith on your way out. The rest of us will heartily thank you for it.

Spielberg and Smith are claiming to go all the way back to the comic either to save face with the remake haters, or (and this is kinda funny) they actually believe that Chan Wook Park made too many mistakes with his adaptation and they plan to clean up his "mess." The movie was virtually perfect. A remake by any other name is still a remake.

I read "'Oldboy' Not A Remake" and was in the middle of my sigh of relief when I read the article... Damn my false sense of hope.

In fact, I think I'd rather watch the cheap Bollywood knock-off than a Smith & Spielberg remake.

Fuck that. Oldboy was good - it wasn't great.

First and fucking foremost. OLDBOY IS NOT FUCKING HORROR. WHY THE FUCK IS IT ON HERE??? Second, remaking a masterpiece? They just said, AND YOU QUOTED...FROM THE COMIC BOOKS. Seriously. What has become of this site...?

I am a huge follower of Spielberg and I have enjoyed (most) of Will Smith's movies. I read I AM LEGEND and didn't think the book was all that great. A good read, but not that great. My brother thought so, too. The movie wasn't much better, either. I know the talent of both these guys, but I don't know the source material at all. I live in a small town in Alaska so...I won't be able to go over the source material any time soon, but you can't knock Spielberg's work. He knows how to bring a gritty reality to a film and Smith can bring that emotion to the character. I'll try and get to the comics and try to see the movie when I can before I pass any judgment, but in the mean time...lay off the hate until proven otherwise. You haven't seen what they've done...they haven't even written it yet. Give it time before you hate something. Have reason first. You can be unsure of it, that's fine...but hate and wanting to kill them for even thinking of doing this film? Now we can see who the nuts are and whose sane...

Thanks Dekker, words taken from my mouth... cept the part bout not liking the *book* I am legend -- book is awsome, movie should have been called something entirely different and it still woulda sucked. Everything else -- damn right!

Two hollywood white guys who have zero talent re-making a masterpiece that to this day stands alone (except for the rest of Park-Chan's vengence trilogy)? It's simply sickening. First Suspiria, then the already classic Let the Right One In- obiviously nothing is sacred to these fucking money hungry narcisistic think they have talent idiots.

Actually, I think it'll be funny to see Will Smith do what the main character did at the end of the original. Assuming Spielberg has a pair, that is, and actually keeps with the big twist at the ending... won't mention it, but this is a movie that will hit you HARD. You expect it, but at the same time you're like... NO WAY! THEY DIN'T!!!! OH LORDY!!!!!
