As I sit here still cringing over the idea of Steve Spielberg and Will Smith commercializing the incredible Oldboy, Smith is already running around Hollywood looking for someone to pen the remake. According to THR, Mark Protosevich - who wrote the first draft of I AM LEGEND - is in talks to write the film where a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. Has anyone else accepted this news yet? I'm still trying to force it down.
i have never been more against anything in my life. Maybe a good part of that is because of the people behind it Spielberg is so totally a dickhead...hackybastard...
who wants to take bets that they turn it into a enemy of the state/spy game type of bullbullshit. And no one can tell me that they are really going to stay true to the reason why he was put in the cell in first place. They will NOT put that in an american made film
I think its safe to say that we are all in agreement that this won't work. Anyone who thinks differently hasn't seen Oldboy. I can't picture Will Smith even watching it.
This is absolutely repugnant. Sure, I have the freedom to refuse to see it and they're free to make whatever movies they want (barring copyright boundaries of course), but this is sort of like getting a phone call from your daughter saying, "I'm going to marry a guy 14 years older than me that I met online last week." To see Spielberg and Smith looking around for a screenwriter saying, "We're gonna remake Oldboy".....you just want to send them to their room without dinner to think about what they're doing. Then again, when you think about how much crap these two have made in their time and the millions upon millions that crap has made, are any of us really all that surprised?

hey "I am legend" kicked ass and Will is a pretty decent actor...and I also think it would be nice to see a American version of oldboy with an actor that doesn't look like shit...but, it would be fucked up to watch Will fuck his movie daughter so disregard everything I just said. leave oldboy alone...
I don't mind Spielberg behind the lens, but Will Smith as the lead? No. Give it to Kurt Russel, or Kiefer Sutherland...guys who are excellent at playing tormented characters.

Texican666; thats the thing with Oldboy - the first thing we all think of is that awesome fight scene in the middle and think that mabey a remake could work. Then you remember all that other fucked up stuff that made this movie stand out and you know it just can't - especially with the prince of pristine Will Smith in the lead. I'd say this ranks up there with Hilary Clinton doing a porno. It really is that fucking ridiculous.
Will Smith?!?!? Oh, hell fucking NO! I take back what I just said about remakes -- this is fucking blasphemy! Keep Smith OUT of serious genre flicks. That guy is the middle-of-the-road ensuring kiss of death!
