jmacgrath, your phrase. "What is wrong with remakes? If it's done well, then I have no issue with a remake." is a grand dream that's ill fated. The fact of the matter is, NO, remakes AREN'T bad, but a good remake is like finding a diamond in the center of a mountain of pebbles. It's rarer now than it was, ten or twenty years ago. The reason why is, as the years gone by, commercialism as at an all-time high, and when that happens, artistic dedication is lost to the mindset of "making a quick buck". When that happens, people don't take their job seriously, and only do what they have to to complete a mediocre movie. Now, the mindset of "making a quick buck" has always been around, but there always has also been dedicated artistry associated to movies(all movies, even horror). Now, let's talk about ripoffs. Ripoffs are like remakes, they can be done right in the RIGHT HANDS, but most of the time you get them in the WRONG HANDS. The 80s slasher ripoffs, a lot of them, were done good. A lot of the writers, though riping off the common theme that, mostly, borrowed from Carpenter's Halloween(some from Hooper's TCM), everybody put their own spin on it, be it more realistic or more supernatural. The 90s did to ripoffs what the 2000s did to remakes.
