About That 'Herbert West' TV Series....

This weekend we broke the news that a new TV series is the works that would bring Herbert West to the small screen as a young teenage Dr. Frankenstein. Almost immediately following the post one of the mad geniuses behind HERBERT WEST: RE-ANIMATOR THE SERIES dropped us a line to clear up any questions B-D readers might have about it. Read on for the skinny.

Here's the low down of the plot from Writer William Butler.

"We are currently working on a pilot for television, which follows a group of young science students while on their journey at Miskatonic University and the sci-fi and supernatural events that occur there," he tells Bloody-Disgusting exclusively.

But it should be clear that this show is going to be very separate from Stuart Gordon's masterpiece RE-ANIMATOR.

"This project in no way is connected to/or like the original classic movie [RE-ANIMATOR], which we respect and honor with all of our being, but rather a growing narrative inspired by all of HP Lovecrafts early works as well as new science fiction elements. 'Herbert West: Re-Animator The Series' will be for Science Fiction, what Buffy The Vampire Slayer was for gothic horror."

Something really cool we learned is that the project was created by Meredith Red, wife of legendary horror writer/director Eric Red, three time Emmy Award Winner John Vulich and William Butler.

The pilot presentation for HERBERT WEST is slated to shoot in April of 2009 from Transition Entertainment.

This has fail written all over it. I will give it a chance though. I won't just shoot it down, but I still think this is going to be terrible.

It's still going to suck, I can tell.

I hate to be cynical, but this sounds like yet another case of someone developing a supernatural-themed DAWSON'S CREEK around an existing property, in a crass and misguided attempt to cash in. I have no problem with the idea of following young Herbert West to his discovery of his re-agent serum, and the consequences, but the comparison to BUFFY in the email makes it pretty clear that we'll be treated to a West who looks like a catalog model and becomes embroiled in numerous angsty, weepy, teen romances along the way. If I wanted to see horror neutered and packaged for the SMALLVILLE set, I'd see TWILIGHT (and I won't be doing that!).

It doesn't matter how they try to paint it up pretty with flowery descriptions, it's still going to blow hard. And it's still blasphemy, not only to "Re-Animator" fans, but to Lovecraft fans in general.

So, if this is to science fiction what Buffy The Vampire Slayer is to gothic horror, then it's going to be ridiculously stupid and lame, right? Just making sure...

We'll see

This statement says it all.

This sounds pretty cool. Buffy is one of the best series (right after Angel) of all time and if they try to make this the sci-fi equivalent, it should be awesome. Of course they won't have all of the cool characters of the buffyverse, but it should still be good.

why bother with this? I mean which would you rather have this or House of Re-antimator?

could be interesting, but I rather see House of Re-animator. I btw don't really see what could make this an ongoing story line. hmm, we'll see what happens. I'm not to excited yet, but maybe in time...

If it is like Buffy, then yeah I guess it will suck. :(

I agree. "What's the point " ?? If it has nothing to with Re-Animator, then take the name and Herbert West off of it. Sounds lame and cheapens the original if they use the name and character for this.

yah I mean the only people that this would be interesting to are the fans of the Re-antimator series and they are not all happy about it, including myself, who thinks Re-antimato is one of the coolest horror movies ever made. If you want to make the fans happy, make House of Re-antimator and leave this idea alone.

Well Horrorphiles, I plan on giving this a chance. I must say, that I have read Lovecraft since I was in middle school, and I have never really been happy about the movies based on his works. I was never a fan of The Re-Animator series. I like Jeffrey Combs as an actor, and I liked the effects in it, but it was never my cup of tea. As a horror movie outside of Lovecraft it works as a horror-comedy, but not inside of the world of the Old Ones, it just doesn't jive. It was too silly, and the atmosphere was never the impending doom as suggested by Lovecraft. I think John Carpenter's The Thing is closer to a vision of Lovecraft, with a nihilistic view and with no escape. Not saying this will be the voice in the crowd that will silence all voices on things Lovecraft, merely saying I am hoping someone will get this right. Del Toro is my hope for that really, but who knows, maybe this could turn out somewhat interesting at the very least. Then again it could be Dawson's Creek with tentacles too.

The only Unspeakable Horror hear is the fact that this is still being worked on.
