Nearly four years after being announced, it looks like the Wayans brothers are still planning to bring their version of The Munsters to the big screen. When it was originally announced, it was revealed that Universal Pictures would release the film that would be directed Keenen Ivory Wayans by from a screenplay by Keenen Ivory, Marlon and Shawn Wayans. You can read the latest beyond the break.
The long-gestating Wayans Brothers’ “Munsters” flick is closer than ever to happening, Shawn Wayans told MTV News, with the team behind “Scary Movie” and “Little Man” finalizing work on their third draft of the script.
“I’m almost ready. It’s almost ready to be shot,” Wayans insisted during a late night shoot on his newest film, the musical spoof “Dance Flick.” “We had to finish this movie and now we’re going through our third polish on ‘The Munsters.’”
The original idea thrown around was that the movie will take the 1960s television show, which was about a family of friendly monsters who never quite get why people react in terror to them, and give it a 21st century makeover.
“If we do anything, maybe we’ll do a cameo, but we’re not gonna make The Munsters black all of a sudden,” Wayans laughed. “They’re gonna be green, white people just like they were in the TV show. Their characters are still who they were in the ‘50s. It’s just in modern day.”
But one question that hasn’t yet been answered? Why the freaking Munsters in the first place?
“We were big fans of ‘The Munsters.’ We grew up watching them. We loved the characters. We thought that they would be a very, very funny movie,” Wayans insisted. “You know, they did ‘The Addams Family,’ which I thought wasn’t that funny or well-thought out of a show, but they did it ‘cuz they had a catchy theme song and turned it into a movie. I thought ‘The Munsters’ had the real meat and potatoes rich characters.”
Wow. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I loved the TV show.
Most tv shows made into movies are pretty lame. I can't help remembering how the WILD, WILD WEST turned out with Wil Smith in the lead. Now he's a funny guy and a good actor, but James West ?? WTF !!! That did not work and made no sense at all. The Munster"s are great characters so I just hope they don't ruin it.

Try the '60s.
ya know what i have respect for the Wayans bros! they brought an aspect to the horror comedy that we had never seen (SM, SM2) i don't think they would take it on if they didn't think they knew what they were doing, i think they will do it justice.
I give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. I think it would be impossible to mess this us unless they took it in such a direction that it just shits all over the theme of the old show.
“You know, they did ‘The Addams Family,’ which I thought wasn’t that funny or well-thought out of a show"
yeah...cause Marlon and Shawn are known for coming up with such intelligent, funny and well-thought out ideas...
you know em...there's "White Chicks" and...nah, i'll just stop there.
Adams Family was a classic television show.
The Munsters was a good show for its time. But trying to stick the characters into modern day would just be tacky and silly. Not that it couldn't be an entertaining movie, but I see it being stupid more than anything.
Could end up like the Brady Bunch flicks or the Fox Tv Munster movies from the ninties, they featured the Munsters in modern day, it can't be as bad the Munsters Today show,
Munsters show was the best thing to come from black and white television IMO. Wayan bros havent really made me laugh in a while. White Chicks was OK if youre race conscious and laugh at shit like that. Addams Family is for kids. Hopefully this'll be raunchy somehow and edgy for the adults.
I really think the person who should be directing this is Rob Zombie. He shouldnt write it but deff direct. I say this cause he has so much love for this series.
If they get Brad Garrett for Herman Munster, then just maybe this movie will be pretty good. And may I suggest Brian Downey from the sci-fi show Lexx as Grandapa Munster? Brian kinda looks like a young Al Lewis.
