'Oldboy' Remake Resurrected With Steven Spielberg?!

This is either the best news, or the worst news (I'm leaning towards the latter) as Variety reports that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's masterpiece Oldboy. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new pic will be distributed by Universal. In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. What do you guys think? I love Spielberg, but I still find myself gagging as I read this.

That doesn't sound like a very good idea at all. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith doing Oldboy? I don't like a whole lot of foreign films, but Oldboy was pretty damn good. It just seems to me that if Steven Spielberg and Will Smith get their hands on this, it's going to be PG-13 type stuff. And that could mean changing the ending. Meh...I don't know.

man I dunno, this story is way to bleak for the beard, I love Spielberg and he's definitely capable of making a great remake I just think he'll neuter the fuck out of the ending, and if thats the case he needs to step away immediately. As for Smith "awww hell naw" use Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis or Russel Crowe...I think Crowe should do it.

Oh please be bogus! This would be terrible. They (Spielberg and Smith) will never do the original ending. Fuck. This will either never happen, or happen, and never be seen by me.

i forgot to add that will should stick to action type(idependence day, irobot) or comedies (hitch, min in black) stay out of horror. granted he wasnt THAT bad in the remake of iam legend (even though i know some people might disagree with me).

I really can imagine why americans love remakes so much, why would they want to loose time on an ideia that's already been made. I don't think we'll ever fully understand that. Anyways, i loved The Departed, and i watched infernal affairs, but it's not my kind of movie, coming from the asian ppl, more of horror and kiss-ass, BUT... i did love Oldboy, strange and diferent, original, beautiful filmed movie. It's a waste of time if you ask me, but you can be sure that will be done as beautiful, if that is true

The Bollywood remake of Oldboy was terrible. Just seems to be one of those flicks reliant heavily on the original director's style.

Why the fuck would they make the second film out of a trilogy?

8:59am, November 7, 2008

What? No Shitty LeBuff? How can Spielberg possibly make a movie these days without that reject? Still, this will be goddamn terrible either way.

I'm not saying that Spielberg and Smith aren't great; they're just not right for this kind of movie. Which is a nice way of me saying - they're going to completely fuck it up!!! This is joke, right? You guys at BD smoked a bag of really good grass and then came up with this didn't you.

they keep making these remakes because people are still paying to see them. when the remake business stops making money, the remakes will stop. you can count on that. people love to bash these movies but then they are first in line at the theater. with so many original movies being produced today internationally why pay attention to this? let them remake oldboy, there is no way they can improve on the original and there is no way i'm supporting this.

the worst idea ever, oldboy is such a good cool movie, spielberg will just over produce it and it will ruin all its appeal, why doesn't he just go back and make another shitty new indiana jones movie. good this is the worst news ever
