Our boy Quint over at AICN just dropped me an e-mail that filled me with delight, an early Halloween treat if you will. Inside you'll find out who is filling in for Bruce Campbell in Don Coscarelli's long-delayed Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, the sequel to MGM's BUBBA HO-TEP from way back in 2002 (man, time flies). Inside you'll find a portion of an interview with Paul Giamatti, who has already been cast as Col. Parker.
Giamatti spills who is in the role now to Aint it Cool News, along with a little bit about the sequel, which includes (but is not limited to) Col. Parker as a vampire (both literally and figuratively speaking) and a peyote trip sequence.
While talking about director Don Coscarelli, he spills the beans on who could be replacing Bruce Campbell as Elvis.
"His [Coscarelli's] movies are amazing. They are totally unique, you know? So then he asked me if I was interested in doing this one and I was just like “You have got to be kidding me. Yeah, absolutely!” I said, “I have a little production company and we can help you guys do this” and he brought me in onboard and now we have got Ron Perlman interested in playing Elvis."
You might know Perlman as the big bad red machine HELLBOY.
So what happened to Bruce Campbell? Giamatti has the story...
"Every effort was made by us, he just didn’t want to do it and he was cool about it. He just didn’t want to do it, which is a bummer, because part of the reason I love that movie is him… a big part of it. He’s fantastic and I’ve always loved him. I’m a big fan of his, but he didn’t want to do it, which is totally cool."
Something that has been top secret until now is the plot, which is finally being talked about.
"It’s got a lot of stuff about Col. Parker being responsible for a lot of what happened to Elvis and kind of literally making him a vampire in some ways, you know? A kind of a blood sucker… It plays on a lot of things, this movie, in a great way and it’s got Sitting Bull in it and there’s a peyote trip in it that is amazing and it’s just a big leap beyond the other movie. It’s ten times more insane and bizarre and it’s great and hilarious, too. It’s funnier than the other one is even. It still ends up being this great character study of this Elvis guy...
"...Col. Parker is a completely bizarre, shadowy weird figure. He’s like something out of a horror movie or something. Nobody really knows much about him and I didn’t even know that he was Dutch! He’s not American! He’s this sort of quintessential American huckster character and he’s not American! He’s Dutch! He escaped the Nazis and it’s just completely bizarre. So it has this larger than life, grotesque weird lovely thing going on anyway and that Elvis was obsessed with astrology and the occult and all of this stuff. "

Hopefully the hottie that bends over in front of Bruce Campbell while they're in the bedroom will make an appearance.
All kidding aside, I look forward to this. Coscarelli is one of my favorite directors.

Campbell's gonna regret not doing this movie so much! It was probably the only thing that could have saved his career post-My Name Is Bruce.
This is great news.
Ummm...Ron Perlman looks nothing like Elvis, wrong build, wrong face. Bruce Campbell is what made Bubba Ho-Tep what it was, not Don Coscarelli. You can't make this movie without Bruce Campbell. That's like making an Evil Dead sequel with someone else playing Ash. At the same time Bruce should realize that without another Evil Dead on the horizon this is what a lot of fans wanted to see, him returning to this role. This was a big mistake on the part of both parties, Campbell's and Coscarelli's.
i think it's brilliant casting. as long as they cast actors as good as Perlman, they could hire a different actor to play elvis in each sequel. bruce is busy with cable tv these days anyway. bubbahotep is a truly great movie. this sequel sounds badass.
The whole Evil Dead topic angers me. Raimi and Campbell act like they're too busy to make this thing happen. Yet they continue to pump out crapper after crapper. Ghost House pictures is so overated and the only thing I'm looking forward to from them is Incident at Sans Asylum.
FUCK PETER PARKER

This will only work if in part 3 elvis is played by Jeffrey Combs and by Brad Dourif in part 4 ;)
buy yeah I can't really see Ron as Elvis, but I love Ron and Don (but not in a gay way) so I'll trust part 2 will be great
I think the best underlying news here is that Giamatti loves Coscarelli's stuff AND has a production company. Maybe we could see Phantasm V as a result of this. :D
i wasnt a fan of Bubba Ho-tep...
and now THIS killed it for me completely..
I cant stand Ron Perlman in MOST of his roles.
I only wanted to see Bubba Ho-tep because of Campbell. oh well.
I love Ron Perlman, but I dont think I could even imagine anyone less suited to play Elvis than him. There's just nothing about him that screams the king to me. Bubba Nosferatu without Bruce Campbell aint got much goin for it
Giamatti rocks. And I love Perlman, but I just don't see him playing Elvis. Campbell shouldn't have jumped ship on this one... even IF Burn Notice is popular.
Bruce Campbell looked nothing like Elvis also, but with make up and appliances he pulled it off.
At least part of the reason, I think, that Campbell doesn't want to return IS all the appliances and the fat suit that required for the role. I think Ron Pearlman is fantastic in everything he does.
Ron perlman is a great actor, cant imagine him as elvis but seeing as its a comedy and has supernatural stuff in it maybe they will make a joke or reference in the script to explain elvis sudden change in size, actually the more i think about it the more hilarious i think ron will be.
Ron Perlman's amazing. Nice to know that they can tap someone of that caliber. I gotta admit, I'm not getting the whole physical resemblance thing right now. But I'm sure they'll figure a way to overcome that. And Giamatti's involved? Coscarelli + Giamatti + Perlman = definite home run.
