Columbia Pictures to Adapt 'Preacher' Comic Series!

Happy Halloween to me! My favorite comic book of all-time is finally back on the rails as Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Preacher, the popular 1990s Vertigo series, for an adaptation to be directed by Sam Mendes. I would have loved to see this as an HBO series, but at this point I'm willing to take it in any form I can. Read on for the skinny.

Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner are producing with Kickstart Prods.' Jason Netter.

Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, "Preacher," which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon.

Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

Getting a "Preacher" project off the ground has long been a favorite among the comic book literati in town, though none has been blessed to see completion. The project was previously set up as a one-hour series at HBO but was put into turnaround. Mark Steven Howard wrote a pilot which Howard Deutch was attached to direct.

A previous movie version, to have been produced by Kevin Smith's View Askew, among others, got to the casting stage, with James Marsden attached for the title role and a reported budget of $25 million.

The new "Preacher" has no writers on board, though Mendes will lead the search while putting the finishing touches on his drama "Revolutionary Road, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and due Dec. 26.

While comic book movies might seem as common as Joker Halloween costumes, CAA-repped Mendes directed one of this century's early comic adaptations, 2002's "Road to Perdition."

Moritz and Netter are working adapting another Ennis comic book, "The Boys," which also is set up Columbia.

Thank You Swett Genesis! I was bummed that there will not be 90 episodes from HBO, but with Sam Mendez at the helm, I feel safer than the team that brought us Grumpier Old Men! Casey Aflec as Jesse Cutter would be the best choice! This better be true and as vile and offensive as the series. If not, there is no hope for anything

I'm more interested in The Boys film adaption since I like it more than Preacher, but I highly doubt it will be anywhere near as insane as the comic is.

Personally I hate the idea of a movie and really hope its not turned into one. Now before you string me up for saying that, here is why I say that. 1- It would have to be severly censored for a mass theatrical release which would in turn ruin the film since the adult content is what is part of what makes it so charming. Censoring it would ruin the story and characters. The violence and depravity is as much a part of the story as the people are. This is one of the very rare times I would say violence and sex actually help the story. Yeah sure it could be uncensored on dvd or whatever but thats not the point, besides if they didnt add any new material in all the uncensored stuff would equal about 50 minutes worth of showable material. 2- It would have to be like 4 hours long to fit all the material in. Cutting out stuff would hurt the story and characters since all the misfortunes and good things that happen are what make the characters more likeable or detestable, even the little guy who screws dead meat is important to the story. The whole thing with its small nuances read over the series is what helps draw you in and appreciate everything that much more. 3- I dont think it would do well financially enough for anyone to invest what needs to be invested in it to do the project properly or even make it 2 films. Sure us hardcore fans really want to see it but most people dont. The general public wouldnt get it, all they would see is the cursing, the violence and so on, the whole point of the story and the relationship you build with the characters would be lost on them. People (at large) want something thats easily digestible in 90 minute segments. 4- The whole theme of god turning his back on man and the quest jessie takes to kill god will piss off more people than you imagine. Especially if they kept in the original ending [SPOILER!!!!!] then the saint of killers, a man who was used by god and cast aside will kill him. I dont think that will sit well with the christians at all. All the relgious zealots out there will be running around in a tizzy because of this. People will not be able to handle the god hating and god condemning overtones, I know some will say sure they can, but they wont. People as individuals are smart but in groups they are insane and stupid, especially large religious groups. They have no sense of reasoning as a whole (sorry wasnt making fun of anyone who is religious, just illustrating a point). 5- The story, content and such will be altered for a movie. You can not (to me atleast) make preacher any better, you can only make it worse by tinkering with it. Time constraints, ratings constratins, studio execs, movies run time, producers, writers, director and all these other facts will change the movie and personally you cant change it for the better. At any rate, I would rather see this not get made now because its potential for failure is huge. Id rather not see it, than see it made and just crash and burn and thereby ruining any other chances of it being done right. Its just a big and complex thing thats to much to digest in movie format really. The HBO series is still the only viable option in my mind, it was perfect. The total freedom of being on HBO, the episodic content where everything has room to be in it and not hampered by trying to censor it down to a R rating for theaters.

Sam Mendes will be directing this?!!!! Holy-fucking-shit!!!! Do you guys realize just how awesome this news is? Sam Mendes, one of the greatest and most artistic modern directors is taking a crack at "The Preacher"... wow, this is so awesome that I don't even know what to say. This is actually more exciting than the prospect of Robert Rodriguez making it.

@Gargus, while I agree with what you are saying to an extent, don't write off Mendes so quickly. I, too, am a fan of the comics and Sam Mendes is as trustworthy pf hands as us fans could have counted on to adapt the material. Look at his body of work ("American Beauty", "Road to Perdition", "Jarhead"), the man is the definition of a "daring film maker". Through his career, he's shown he doesn't pull punches and his films are full of adult themes and dark undertones. "The Preacher" would definitely be something different for his career, but I have the utmost faith in his ability.

Heres to hoping that Columbia doesnt realize what they just go into and drop it. To some, its pretty controversial subject matter.
