You read it here on Bloody-Disgusting first (October 17), now the news has been officially confirmed that Pascal Laugier - who directed the incredible French horror film MARTYRS - is in final negotiations to both write and direct Dimension's re-imagining of Hellraiser, one of horrormeister Clive Barker's best-known creations.
Released in 1987, "Hellraiser" told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of demons called Cenobites, most notably one nicknamed Pinhead -- who became one of the most enduring horror characters of the decade -- who was summoned using an antique puzzle box.
Dimension has been hoping to relaunch the franchise for the past couple of years, first hiring Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo to write and direct a remake then tapping Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to write a new draft.
ICM-repped Laugier at least seems to have thematic sympathies with the material, with his "Martyrs" beginning as a revenge movie then entering the grounds of spiritual horror, with torture figuring as a focal point. Torture -- though not the so-called horror subgenre of torture porn -- also is a key point in "Hellraiser."
"This is a dream project for me," Laugier said. "I know Clive Barker's work very well, and I would never betray what he has done. Fans are expecting a definitive 'Hellraiser,' and I don't want to take that away from them."
"Martyrs" has been dividing audiences since appearing at the Festival de Cannes because of its unrelenting violent nature. The movie was hit with a 18+ rating -- a rarity in France and an equivalent of NC-17 in the U.S. -- sparking a protest by the country's Society of Film Directors.
At the Toronto International Film Festival, several people reportedly fainted during its midnight screenings. The Weinstein Co. is the domestic distributor, but no dates have been announced.
The remake is part of Dimension chief Bob Weinstein's master plan.
"If I could make all my films from franchises, I would," the Weinstein Co. co-chairman said at the recent Media and Money conference in New York. At the event, presented by Dow Jones and the Nielsen Co., parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, he rattled off a list of other films that he hopes to continue sequelizing, including SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE.
Being such a huge Hellraiser fan, I can't say that it makes me happy to know that anyone would want to re-make what I consider to be the greatest horror movie of all time, but in the same sense, I'm very intrigued to find out what another person could do with the story.
I saw Martyrs and met Pascal Laugier at Tiff, great film great director. I was pissed when the guys from Inside were dropped from doing this but I now have 100% faith again in this project. If they have to remake it at least they want the best to do it.
I love Hellraiser, and am all for a fresh version even...but that quote in yellow above, sounds almost word for word what Rob Zombie said while going into his Halloween. I certainly didn't hate his version, but many fans DID...so reading those words again kind of worries me about how the fans in general will respond.
I also had the honor and pleasure to meet Pascal Laugier at TIFF and he definitely has the balls to resurrect the beast and make it fun. I'm really curious to see how he will deal with all those entertaining, greedy American producers: "Ouais, ouais, VA TE FAIRE ENCULER... HAN HAN HAN!!!"
I'm all against remakes, why?
Cause usualy they are done with movies that just been released, and most of the times by directors we never even heard of. Now Pascal Laugier proved something with Martyrs, and if he's the one writing and directing Hellraiser, well, good news, cause american is now all about remakes, so we have to deal with that unfortunate reality, we just have to hope that good decisions like this one, one good director taking over the entire movie, AND... hellraiser is 21 years old. Like i said, it's not been released this year or the past year.
I'm not too excited about this. I really hope that they don't betray the fans and decide not to cast Doug Bradley as Pinhead. If Doug doesn't play Pinhead, there will be no point in seeing it other than out of minor curiosity.
I haven't got to see Martyrs yet, but based on Saint Ange, I'm really glad this is the director pick because the Hellraiser series has really gone to shit. That said, I don't want another version of "The Hellbound Heart" so I hope this story will be new.
I also seriously wonder in which context Bob Weinstein said that, so I'll look up that interview. Such a statement sounds quite bleak to upcoming writers and film-makers who wish to launch NEW franchises from a FILM, and not make films from franchises.
the only thing about this article i dont like is the bit at the end talking about Scream, i dont see how you could possibly either think about remaking it or making more sequels, that i just dont understand
other than that im totally psyched for the hellraiser remake!
I truly hope all effects refrain from using C.G.I.
If all Cenobites are scurvy, Pinhead has a slightly different look, they cast a slutty Kirsty, and a new Uncle Frank, I think it can certainly be done. However, if they use Doug Bradley, it'll just feel like a shitty sequal. Might as well bring in J.P. Monroe.
face
I JUST WANT TO SEE MARTYRS!!!!!@#$#!@#%$!#@$#@!$@!#$
I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT A HELLRAISER REMAKE AND BONDAGE GOTHIC DEMONS, I WANT A MARTYRS US RELEASE DATE!@#$%@#$^@#$%^@$%@#4
So the 1st half is going to be an absolute balls to the walls bloodfest, and the second half will be a lack-luster waste of time?! (cos thats what martyrs was.)
I'm not the biggest Hellraiser fan in terms of the series, but I loved the first one. The only other one I watched was Hellbound: Hellraiser 2, and I didn't really like it too much. The remake sounds promising, but hell, I said the same thing about Halloween......
but hey, screw Hellraiser, they should remake Nightbreed, and make it more epic and call it Cabal. That'd be cool. And Crispin Glover could play Decker!!!!
Should be a brilliant remake. I have never had the oppurtunity to see Martyrs either, which I am very bummed about since it is not planned on being released until fucking april 09. I am really interested to see what kind of influence an Extreme Horror director from France will have on this particular film. In my opinion France has been putting out the highest quality horror/thriller films in the 2000's. If Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes remake from Alexandre Aja was any sort of forewarning then this should be fucking brilliant.
It makes me feel better about a remake if they are bringing in (or attempting to bring in) directors who have a unique perspective. The one thing about the book and these movies is that is almost beautifully surreal. I hope it turns out well.
With a little luck, a Hellraiser remake could kick a lot of ass. As for Weinstein's plans on making more Scream sequels, give me a break. The first Scream was good, but they started to suck more and more ass with each sequel. Another one would just be an insult.
