'Orphanage' Director Chats 'Haters'

It's so nice to see a director break free from being typecast. After the success of PAN'S LABYRINTH and then THE ORPHANAGE, it appeared as if this might be the new direction to go in for director Juan Antonio Bayona. A new interview with the Spanish director that details his plans for his next feature, HATER, which sounds completely different in tone from ORPHANAGE. Read on for the skinny.

"HATER is about a sudden epidemic of hate that comes from nowhere and happens to everybody," Bayona tells Twitch Film. "It doesn’t care about race, sex or heritage. The media tells the story in a way that one has to wonder if everything is really happening, or maybe if it’s all result of collective hysteria. The uncertainty is frightening: nobody knows who will survive at the end of the day or who will die.

"What I really liked about the story was that it deals with the real world we are living. It asks if we want to live in a world where we are controlled from above, through fear. HATER is an answer to that fear: it shows what can happen when people react to it with uncontrollable fury. That’s an excellent start for a movie."

It does sound like the Signal, but I loved the Signal so this could be good. The Orphanage is one of my fav horror films of all time.

This is actually based on a novel by David Moody. Really cool book. He has also wrote a zombie trilogy (with a fourth companion book) by the name of Autumn that is in production by another director. If you enjoy horror novels check this guy out (they sell his stuff on Amazon) it will be worth your while.

I read this book too and let me tell you that it's really "not" like the signal. That would be like saying that Friday the 13th is just like Crocodile Dundee because they both use machetes. There's a hell of a lot more to a movie than just a couple of plot points. But then you wouldn't know that by looking at most horror films in the last decade.

I think The Orphanage is one of the best horror movies I´ve seen and I just cannot wait for more movies by this director but to be honest I´m so sick and tired of these epidemic and zombie apocalyptic movies so I´m not really "psyched" for this but who knows it could be great
