One of my favorite directors of this decade is Korean maestro Park Chan-wook, who directed the incredible OLDBOY, alongside SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE and LADY VENGEANCE. Now, he's completing a new vampire film for Universal Pictures entitled Thirst, which will see a release here in the States come 2009. Inside you can check out the first ever still from the film that features star Song Kang-ho (The Host).
The story finds Korea's leading man, Song Kang-ho, as a much-loved priest who becomes a vampire after a failed medical experiment; he becomes a tortured and depraved soul. Title refers to a craving for sex, blood and love. CJ is pitching the pic as a love story with horror and drama.
I love asian horror, they seem to be able to instill the fear and impending doom that horror needs into their work as opposed to the flapping boobies and gore that Hollywood thinks is a key ingredient. I admit I haven't seen any of the actor's other work, but even from this pic I can see the 'impending doom' ingredient is going to be there. Look forward to it...
I thought "I'm A Cyborg" was a misfire, but the rest of Chan-wook Park's filmography is utterly stellar. And Song Kang-Ho has been great in other Park movies, too - particularly "JSA".
I've heard Park specifically describe "Thirst" as a melodrama and not a horror movie, though...
