We just added our official review of Sony Screen Gems' Quarantine, which took the number 2 spot at the box office ($14,200,000) behind that damn Chihuahua. Tex writes, "This year’s THE RING or THE GRUDGE... As a visceral screamfest, QUARANTINE seems unequaled in 2008 for it’s sheer audacity in propelling the audience directly into the story. It’s the closest a film has come to the total immersion of role-playing video games." Click the title for the full review and don't forget to write your own review of the remake, which is now in theaters everywhere.
I suggest the man who reviewed this shitty ass remake to go watch the original be4 giving it too much credit.
[REC] is amazing and this cash-in does not deserve to take its thunder, I know it won't since debuted at #2 in the box office with only 14 million, while the original has won several awards and its a hit with critics and fans alike.
Have you seen the film xtiand? It's actually one of the better remakes out there, and I've seen Rec. The critics seem to agree too, since it's currently fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
KatarineAddict: 63% out of 27 reviews isn't that wonderful and it's just BARELY a "fresh" rating (I expect it to drop to "rotten" pretty soon). Plus, "Quarantine" wasn't even screened for critics (you'll notice that none of the "Top Critics" have bothered with it). Furthermore, you missed xtiandf78's argument of this remake stealing all of the thunder of the original. Most American audiences will now either A) never hear of "[REC]" B) see "[REC]" and consider IT to be a rip off of Quarantine (this will happen, believe it or not, I talked to handful of young adults a few years back that thought "Ringu" was the Japanese remake of "The Ring") or C) hear of "[REC]" but not care to see it because of already seeing "Quarantine". As you can see, "Quarantine" reaps the benefits of "[REC]" universally. Thus, the term "stealing its thunder" applies perfectly.
You need to throw [REC] out the window when you talk about Quarantine. Because it will probably never be released in America. And if it does it will be a small release to dvd. The General audience only has Quarantine. So either way it doesn't matter; we should just be happy it was a good horror movie that is rated R that did well in the box office.
I agree with you Mikieblade. I really enjoyed Quarantine and am glad it is doing well at the Box Office. People are never satisfied though and you will still have BITCHES complaining well after Quarantine is on dvd about it.
Oh come on, although the second half of my argument can be considered bitching (even though I never attack "Quarantine", if you read my post), how can you simply ignore and brush off the first factual half of my argument? Guys/gals, that’s not debating. I'm not bitching, simply trying to enhance the discussion.
Quarantine was just another virus-that-turns-people-into-zombies movie with less originality than a dying tree stump. And I've never seen [REC]. It was boring. Why was it boring? Because I've seen this movie so many times before in THE PAST TWO YEARS ALONE (I Am Legend, 28 Weeks Later, Doomsday, and so on) just the thought of seeing it one more time makes me want to shoot my eyeballs out. Why was this even made?
HAHAH saw some parts of it.
it was mostly laughable
SPOILER
they ask that black couple to come downstairs and and the woman said, dont speak english in english.
LAME... felt like a spinoff from 28 franchise
You know what? with todays technology and the Internet there's just NO excuse to not bother finding the original, you can either download the damn movie or buy it thru Amazon UK.
You might think the US is the only market that counts but I got newsflash for you, [REC] has been a hit in Europe & South America, so it's hardly an obscure movie that nobody's gonna notice...
Quarantine might well be a good film, but so far I have seen quite a few reviews from people who have not seen REC or do not wish to compare them. I can appreciate why this is, however it would be nice to actually have the comparison for those of us who made the effort and have already seen REC. If this is just a shot by shot remake (with more dumbed down explanations of what is happening) it would be nice to know.
xtiandf78, your comments are elitest and, worse, insulting. This bullshit about "the remake will keep people from finding the original" is stupid, kneejerk, ill-considered idiocy. If somebody likes the remake more often than not they will seek out the original. People are not as dumb as you think they are., nor are you a better person because you saw REC. I saw it, too. Loved it. And I love the remake. It's a concept that lends itself to a remake like this. It's a trip through a haunted house, for all intents and purposes. The remake is the same haunted house, sure. But it's still a good fucking haunted house. Remakes are not the Devil. It's ok to retell a story in a different language or time. Like, ya know, man has done all through history. The original point, though, is don't be such a pompous baby. REC will have a life, it will be found. You don't sound like a purist or a champion of film. You sound like a fucking idealistic insular douche who hasn't fully thought the issue through. The you dummies always cry apocolypse everytime there is a remake, but the sky never falls. Nobody dies. True fans will find the original. Others won't. Who fucking cares about them??? Get a grip and reel back didactic melodrama.
