Kevin Smith's 'Red State' Not Commercial Enough

While Kevin Smith's out and about promoting his latest dick and fart joke comedy, ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, he has also been chit-chatting about his long-gestured horror-thriller RED STATE. The good news is that Smith is apparently dying to make the movie, the bad news is that nobody will let him. Inside you can read the latest from an interview over at AICN.

Kevin Smith tells Aint it Cool News:

"I'm still trying to find money for Red State, though, admittedly, I haven't been looking that hard yet, since it's not something I'm gonna get to 'til March the earliest. Early prospects, however, look dim. Problem is, the flick is bleak. Beyond bleak, even. Remember how bleak Dark Knight was? This flick makes the bleakness level in that flick seem Beverly Hills Chihuahua bleak. Sadly, while the flick's bleaker than Dark Knight, it's also not nearly as good as Dark Knight. Or as commercial. Or commercial at all, really. The commercial prospects for Red State are not good. The only chance it'll have at the box office would be if it caught a water cooler-kinda buzz out of a film festival. So when you go down the checklist (overtly bleak, unlikeable characters making horrible decisions, unhappy ending in which everyone dies, a director of questionable talent who's never worked in this genre before), you can see why folks aren't whipping out their check books.

The question, then, would be "Why bother?" For some reason, I feel like I've gotta make this flick. Part of the reason is that I never really feel like a filmmaker most days; more of a writer who gets to direct his own flicks. Trying my hand at another genre that's 180 degrees away from anything else I've ever done might finally answer the question (for me) of whether or not I truly am a filmmaker, or just the guy who makes the dick and fart jokes movies. I suspect it's the latter. I guess we'll see. Maybe.
"
RED STATE is a horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

Why not ask the Weinsteins? They've been attached to just about every one of his projects.

Why doesn't Kevin just do it himself?!! Fuck the studios. He has the following and I don't see how he wouldn't be able to raise money for it.

Why not just allow someone else to direct his scripts for once?

Call them "dick and fart" movies if you want, but there damn good ones ("Jersey Girl" not included, every director slips up one time or another). Hopefully "Red State" gets made, it sounds like a blast and rather original (something we desperately need in the horror genre these days). If worse comes to worse, Smith needs to just break away and make this independently.

Allow me to correct this: The bad news is that Smith is apparently dying to make the movie, the good news is that nobody will let him.

The Weinstein's already turned him down. I also think that he should just sink about a five hundred grand of his own money into it and make the film he wants to make. Christ, Chasing Amy only cost 250 k. He could do it on a shoe-string if he wanted to. I'd love to see someone like him re-embrace the indie spirit rather than just keep eeking by on safe films that pay you. He's always been creative as hell. He could make a great film if he wanted to, and he'd have no one to answer to. Even if he didn't secure theatrical distribution fo it after it was done, he could more than recoup his costs by seeling it straight to DVD on his website. JUST DO IT KEVIN! You'll be happier for it if you aren't fettered by Hollywood and their shitty little criteria for what is or is not commercial.

IF it's NOT a commercial movie, than do it as an indie movie. But then I guess it MUST BE a commercial movie because he wants to make money of it thus it IS commercial.

Nobody wants to give him money because his films are small hits or big misses!

I like most of Kevin Smith's movies. I think he could do the horror genre justice if he put his mind to it... as long as he doesn't get involved with anything resembling VULGAR. Anyone see that one? It was beyond wretched.

"While Kevin Smith's out and about promoting his latest dick and fart joke comedy." Ironic that you'll get excited about pictures from fucking SAW 5, which is also arguably the same thing over and over again. Let's call it "the latest bloody chains and screaming movie" from now on, then, eh?

I actually think it would be pretty cool to see him do something totally different. I erally hope this gets made. Id be there to see it for sure. Im a fan of his so if he had his hand at a horror flick, hell yeah.

As for RED STATE; I think its good when movies want be different and dare to walk a very thin line of greatness vs failure with nothing in between. Kevin's first movie CLERKS was a great example of a non-commercial film that no doubt was awesome. Sometimes movies don't fall on the favorable side of the thin line which was the case for VULGAR. But you can't make great films by playing it safe. Watch the documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS and you can see what Coppola went through to make APOCALYPSE NOW - but it is a great fucking movie. Reading Kevin's words; he needs to be more confident. What I would say to Kevin right now is - find a way to make RED STATE fucking happen! We're standing here in remake, PG-13, and sequel hell. Throw us a fucking bone........

It sounds like Kevin's doing something pretty admirable. The whole reason that Clerks was such a good movie was that it was unlike anything the studios were doing. He seems to have gotten a little too cozy in the studio system, but he'll always be a maverick in my eyes. He does his own thing and this sounds like a welcome change of pace.
