The other day a new interview was posted with Vince Colosimo, one of the stars of Lionsgate's vampire pic Daybreakers. Within the news post, it was reported that the film was pushed back until 2009, while questioning whether or not the film will hit theaters (considering the bulk of LGF horror is going straight-to-disc). Directors Peter and Michael Spierig got in touch with B-D to update the status of the film, which you can read inside.
"We wanted to update you on the status of DAYBREAKERS," the Spierig brothers write into B-D. "Yes it's true that the film has been delayed until 2009, this is simply because the '08 slate is so full, and yes it will be a theatrical release.
"It's been a long and tiring post production process, but it has been completely worth it. We are incredibly proud of the film and feel like we have made something really different for the genre. The information that has been released so far is just a snippet of what the film is all about. Lionsgate have been incredibly supportive of us and our intentions for the picture. To put it simply, the studio loves the movie and wants to see it released correctly, so it's about finding the right date. We can't wait for you guys to see it, we know the delay is frustrating, but we can assure you the reasons have nothing to do with the film being in trouble, in fact quite the opposite, it's about giving DAYBREAKERS every opportunity to be successful."
In the film, it is 2016, and it has been 10 years since the plague transformed ordinary people into Vampires dependent on human blood for survival. As the human race nears extinction and the Vampire population grows desperate for blood, a group of rebel Vampires battle military forces to save the last vestiges of humanity.
Here is why this film won't work: I Am Legend. Both films are too similar and I Am Legend and the powerhorse it was with Will Smith beat this film to the punch. They should have focused on beating I Am Legend to cinemas, now people will look at this film and go, didn't I already kinda see this film.
And there is just too many vampire films coming out. And all are really nothing special. 30 Days of Night was probably the best one that came out this year, but even it wasn't that amazing either.
Mira, I completely agree. It's a classic case of too little too late. I'll wait for the rental. As for 30 Days of Night, I loved that film! I liked the story and for me was the most original vamp flick in a long time. Maybe this one could possibly surprise us?
Maybe, DBlock. I think Lions knows the problem they have here, hence the many delays. I never did see Let The Right One In, but heard it was great. What 30 Days of Night and Let the Right One In have going for it is they are unique. I don't think Daybreakers will have anything unique to set it apart.
mira, i agree w/ you that 30 Days (which i LOVE! i haven't seen 'Let tro In' yet) is very unique. i'm actually excited to see Daybreakers. i think this has a good chance to appeal to the MANY people (myself definitely included!) who HATED "I am Legend". did i mention i HATED that movie. awful.
Theatrical release.
Just like Midnight Meat Train. I very much want to see Let the Right One In. And yeah, this sounds like I Am Legend but with more people. I'm tired of reading bout a virus that threatens to destroy humanity. Find a new plot device please. I'm being premature; I haven't seen any promotion for this yet, it just seems derivative.
Mira: I see your point, but people still went to go see "I Am Legend" when they could have easily picked up "The Last Man on Earth" or "Omega Man" instead. Of course, people just loooove Big Willie.
deadlover: I heard the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" remake is going to feature some kind of government concocted fish virus gone wrong or something... actually I'm just messin’ with you, but that's not much of a stretch.
