FINALLY Some Truth Regarding 'Evil Dead 4'
Tuesday, October 7, 2008

I am seriously fed up with hearing about EVIL DEAD 4. Every single thing reported is completely contradictory as Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell appear to want to do a sequel, and constantly tease that it might happen, only it never goes anywhere. Even beyond that, THE EVIL DEAD remake is still collecting dust. After nearly a decade of BS, I say, put your money where your mouth is. Thankfully, Bruce Campbell appears to be on his last straw too as he has given probably the most honest answer ever to the question, "where the eff is Ash?"

During a new interview with Toyfare Magazine, Bruce Campbell finally gets sick of the "Ash" related questions and spits out a fireball of what appears to be the God-given truth.

"Look, let's cut to the chase because you keep dancing around it, " Campbell exclaims, "if you're talking about Ash coming back again., Sam Raimi has the best perspective. He says, 'Look, I can go back and do Ash vs. whoever whenever I want. I can do that when I'm 70; I don't have to do that now. Right now I'm on a fast, fat groovy rain in Hollywood.' And he's going to follow that, and he'll come back and to EVIL DEAD stuff when he's unemployed and living at the Old Director's Home."

Now that's what I call the truth. Too bad Raimi has signed on to ruin two more Spidey movies... it's going to be a long wait until he's unemployed....

You can read the full interview in Toyfare issue #136, on newsstands now.

It's all a joke to him....

first off i loved spider-man 1,2,3. I don't think anybody could do a better spider-man movie to be telling the truth.Everybody knows there WILL be another evil dead film someday, maybe not in the distant future, be someday..now back to watching feast 2 later.

Evil Dead 4 and/or a remake is like the promiseland of the horror genre... right next to Creepshow 3 (which was fucked up pretty good and proper).

Spiderman and Spiderman 2 were great but 3 suffered the same everything and the kitchen sink bloat rhat affects most third entries. When and if Sam Raimi makes a new Evil Dead it'll be awesome. In the meantime, Drag Me To Hell sounds pretty cool.

Sam Raimi is a pompous sellout and Bruce Campbell has no right getting mad at people for asking him about the franchise that made him a household name. Screw them both.

Seems like Bruce is fed up after years of the question and Raimi's empty promises. I've lost some respect for Raimi if that is how he really feels. He cares more about being a hollywood big shot sellout than giving the fans what they want. I'm at the point where Bruce should just do it without Raimi. My Name is Bruce sounds pretty much like Evil Dead except Bruce plays himself. No one wants to see a 70 year old Ash fighting zombies and erectial dysfunction.

man Sam Raimi is a dick! DO US ALL A FAVOUR & SELL ASH SO WE CAN FINaLLY!! GET FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH!!!

Raimi needs to set his character free from himself. We need somebody to buy the franchise and I feel Freddy vs Jason Vs Ash would be amazing the comic book adaptation of the script was incredible!!! Sam Raimi let everybody down. Come on lets go, it's just not worth it, let him take his ball and go home. He is no fun anyway. He can't rule teh playground anymore, well he can so screw him and his 400 mill gross per Spiderman sequel. move on let other directors do them.

I've said this on this site before, but Sam Raimi is a total sell-out and is basically giving the middle finger to his fanbase. I thought Spider-Man 2 was pretty good, but over-all the Spider-Man series is very much lacking. Spider-Man 3 was terrible, and despite what you might hear, it's not because Venom was squeezed in the movie. It was because Raimi was really unprofessional and gave jobs to his entire family, like his untalented brother who wrote the script. He basically got too powerful and killed it. And even though all the fanbase was screaming for Venom, he only gave him a few minutes of screen time then killed him in an over-the-top fashion. If he isn't gonna make Evil Dead 4 till Bruce Campbell is in his 70s then he might as well of signed off on that Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash script. That was actually GOOD. Thanks for killing it, Raimi. Bruce Campbell should really just do the movie himself because Raimi is clearly a prick.

Evil Dead 4 was recently listed on IMDB last month, so could that mean anything or were they just slow to creating a page for it?

Everyone is just too obsessed with the VS. movies! FREDDY VS. JASON sucked ass! FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH will sniff balls!!! Fans need to stop bitching and get this straight through their hollow skulls. Raimi is at his "fame peak". Like hell he will make an EVIL DEAD movie.

Really? You guys would like to see Raimi sell off the license for "Evil Dead"? Think about what you're saying because I guarantee you, mark my words, we won't get a "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash". That’s a pipe dream. You know what will happen? Seriously, just guess. You already know the answer. We'll get a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Now, we can beat around the bush all day, but you know I'm right. I want "Evil Dead IV" as much as the next horror fanatic, but at least Raimi is making the smart decision by holding onto his creation and not placing it into the hands of someone else. After seeing "The Hitcher", "The Fog", "Black Christmas", and countless other films being raped by remakes I'm hoping that "Evil Dead" will be one of the few to stand its ground and be protected.

Yeah, what a sell out... to be doing something he enjoys doing and making money to do it. Wow, what a jerk he is to be bringing his boyhood fantasies to life on the movie screen. What a selfish piece of crap he is to care more about what makes him happy instead of living his life according to the whims of a fickle fan-base. Why would anyone take a few million dollars to do comic book movies when they could work for peanuts by giving a bunch of fan boy gore hounds some spank material that they'd more than likely rip apart with comments about how it just didn't measure up to the previous films anyway. What a schmuck he is, right? If you ever had any thought that this wasn't the case to begin with than I have some sub-prime loan papers I could sell you... on a serious note, if they do a fourth Evil Dead movie than I honestly do want to see an old, grumpy, somewhat senile Ash come back to fight the deadites. It's really the only kind of story that would be different enough to be worth doing.

Why'd they bite you?

Raimi is a moron. Sorry but it's true. If ever a director sold out it was Raimi. He is all about the money now and giving into the big studios. Spidey 3 was crap, he didn't want Venom but allowed the studio to put him in there and the result was a big pile of crap. Raimi for years said no to ED4 because Army Of Darkness tanked at the box office. Big deal. That film along with the other two films and video games and action figures has made a buttload of money. ED4 would be such a massive hit but of course it's no Spider-Man. The first two Spidey films were so overrated, packed with fake looking CGI and especially now with Nolan's Batman franchise and Iron Man they look even worse. Raimi's best film in years was the little seen The Gift.

What does it matter? Raimi is a fucking sellout. So what? Let the Evil Dead Trology be what it is. Why do we need a fouth? The Evil Dead is a true classic and stands alone as it is and certainly does not need a re-make. Raimi at one time had a touch of genius, let somebody else have an original idea. ED 2 and Army of Darkness were both far inferior to the original and Raimi is overated. As a horror genre guy I could care less about Spiderman. So, let Sam and his lame ass brother ride the gravy train.

i really don't understand the backlash against raimi and everyone who says the guy sold out. He's make some classic indie movies which will be eternal. But the guy also has a career/family... and why hate him for making it a success by doing big budget movies. sure Spidey 3 was horrendous and I have no interest in seeing any other Jap-horror remakes, but the guy has paid his dues and deserves to be coining it. I'm sure he doesn't want to be forever known as the evil dead guy forever.

Raimi doesn't seem to care anymore. He was up for a remake but when he figured out only he was interested in seeing a different actor playing Ash (I think I heard Justin Theroux's name mentioned) he totally dropped the idea of another Evil Dead at all. Given the direction the anthology was headed with Army of Darkness I suspect something closer to an all out comedy (ala Seed of Chucky) rather than a horror film with comedic elements if there were to be an Evil Dead 4. Personally I don't want to have to wait much longer and have to see Ash & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls with Bruce Campbell co-starring Shia LaBeouf just because Campbell is too old to play the character. The guy's still young enough to play Ash, they should take advantage of that fact and not make us wait until its too late to produce something not even half as good as the trilogy deserves.

I would like to someone to explain what it means when someone "sells out." I have a feeling a lot of people here think it's because he hasn't spent his entire career making movies of people in cabins fighting demons whose faces explode. He has consistently been active in the horror/thriller genre since then, going so far as to create a production company to release them. Why pick on him? When Peter Jackson announces his non-horror projects, no one gets up in arms, so get over yourselves.

8:54am, October 8, 2008

I dont blame them both, damn everyone needs to chill out. Raimi is doing what hes doing in hollywood, im sure hed love to do another evil dead but he has other things on his plate. I dont blame Bruce for being annoyed about another Evil Dead question, fuck its been so many years!! ..... but then again My Name is Bruce is coming out and uhh.. thats pretty much related to Evil Dead so....

hegemon13
9:53am, October 8, 2008

Wow, all this hate for Raimi because he is doing exactly what we would. He is not "selling out" just because he is hesitant to risk his career by taking time to give us another entry in a series to which he has already provided three entries and closure. Sure, Evil Dead is popular among us horror fans, but it did not "put him on the map." It wasn't even popular until it's video release. Right now, I am happy he gave us the three awesome, nearly flawless entries that he did. If he is more interested in moving on the other things now, then more power to him.

SummerCampSlasher
10:52am, October 8, 2008

Why is Raimi a sellout? Becuase he's successful? He made three Evil Dead movies and maybe he feels like there's no need for another. If you people look at Raimi's history as a filmmaker, he never said he was a genre filmmaker. Ever. He struggled for A LONG time to get mainstream success. I'm personally happy for the guy.

agentboolen
11:54am, October 8, 2008

There is no reason Sam Raimi couldn't take a break from Spider-man movies and please his fans with a new Evil Dead movie. He took a break to do the Grudge after the 1st movie, but since that it seems like he isn't interested in horror movies. Spider-man is Stan Lee's creation, its nice to see Sam Raimi is more interested in someone else's creation then his own. I also think he should have did everyone a favor and let Ash go up against Freddy and Jason, all he needed to do is ask to read a script and have to approve it. Its not like he has any respect for his creation, or the genre that made him!!!

stewietantrum
12:05pm, October 8, 2008

Let's face it: Sam Raimi is simply not content with having a lot of money, he wants more more more. Sure, ED4 would make a lot of money from horror fans like us, but that dollar amount doesn't even compare to what Raimi would make if he keeps churning out more Spider-Man movies. If ED was a franchise that everyone from toddlers to grandparents would pay money to see, Raimi would do ED. But that's not the case. Sell out? By definition: yes.

Pleatherface31
12:20pm, October 8, 2008

Much respect to Raimi. I still however strongly disagree with his logic. face out

Inga
12:32pm, October 8, 2008

I personally feel that Sam Raimi sold out a long time ago. From what I have read he has burned a few bridges with friends he has worked with on past projects. It's sad that we may never see another ED. Hell unless the start Remaking those too....arrrrgh!

Evil_Flip
12:45pm, October 8, 2008

and what the hell did Raimi say at the comicon then? he said he was writing a script the week after. f-ing bastard. just like when he said he actually liked Venom, while the character was obviously shoved into that movie

NixEclips
1:04pm, October 8, 2008

I'm torn. Raimi and ED were what got me interested in film making and I always hoped he'd hit it big in Hollywood. Now, I want him to take a step back and get back to his roots. Fuck.

DBlock
2:37pm, October 8, 2008

TheDeadMayTasteBad and GoreFreak are spot on! I'm with you guys. As far as Raimi "selling out" thats ridiculous. He, like all successful people, moved on to bigger projects. To fault him for not giving us Freddie vs. Jason vs. Ash is just stupid. Freddie vs. Jason was bad, bad, bad! ED4 would be awesome but not entirely necessary. I love the trilogy as it stands. By the way A Simple Plan was a great movie, I also loved it.

megomobile
7:03pm, October 8, 2008

I personally can't hold it against Raimi for moving on to more lucrative career opportunities. Regarding people saying Raimi should hand over the rights.... I love the ED films, and I personally am happy that he's keeping Ash and the rights all to himself. That way, no stupid MTV director with something to prove can jump in to do a crappy remake. I'd rather say goodbye to the thought of ED4 than see some other director spend millions of dollars to make a film that would be supremely sub par. And possibly star Ashton Kutcher or something when Mr. Campbell gets too old (or turns down the part because it's not Raimi directing).

MaximumMadness
11:52pm, October 8, 2008

Raimi is doing a great job with the "Spider-Man" films (even though 3 wasn't quite up to snuff, it was still very decent compared to other sequels), and he loves the characters and the stories, so I can't blame him for signing on to direct two more films. Plus, the money can't be all that bad, but I don't think making big movies makes you a sell-out. I would love to see an "Evil Dead 4", but personally, I can live with the current trilogy and the video-game/comic-book spin-offs. They tell a pretty complete story. "Freddy VS Jason VS Ash" is just a dumb idea, plain and simple. "Freddy VS Jason" was pretty cool, but adding ANOTHER character is too much.

Chainsawman81

Evil dead was the first horror movie I ever saw and It used to scare the crap out of me as a kid, now its is maybe my number one pic for alltime favorite horror movie, and I would love to see another one. 7:46pm, October 9, 2008

redcapjack, you said it. That is truly what it's all about. As a struggling filmmaker myself, I would gladly sell my soul to the devil, if he existed, in order to make my dream movies. "selling out" is NOT trying to reach your highest potential creatively, but giving in to the pressures of rabid fans actually is. Those first two Spiderman films were great. If Raimi does sell his rights, we will indeed get another shi*ty remake of a classic that simply won't work today. When and if he feels the need to come back to the series, it will be done.
