A can't recall where this little news bit was reported, but giving very little information it was announced that Silver Pictures would be remaking a film entitled They Came Back. We learned that the movie will be a remake of a French film entitled LES REVENANTS. Here's the logline: Having returned to life, the living dead now co-habitate with the living. One morning, a small French city wakes up to discover groups of recently deceased people walking into town. No one knows the cause and there's no time to find out. After tearful and sometimes strained reunions, the returnees look to resume their old lives. But their jobs have been filled, widowed partners have moved on, and Social Services struggles to cope with their various needs. And, also, though healthy and energetic, the returnees seem somehow different than before.

I don't know about that french movie, but this sounds an awful lot like the plot for the book Hantering Av Odöda (Handling Of The Undead), the second bok from swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist (Let The Right One In). Awsome book, sad and scary at the same time.

Upon further investigation I found out that the french movie came out in 2004, while Ajvide Linqvist's book came out in 2006. Still, an awsome book which is gonna become a show for television soon.

No thanks. I'll get the original and skip the remake.

You're absolutely right, FiXXXer. Most French reviews indicate that this is some kind of science-fiction epic that analyzes our relation to the deceased and, inevitably, personal "mourning" experiences. It makes you want to ask yourself how you would feel if one of your family members returned from the dead. There is no gore, or sophisticated special effects, because it is essentially a philosophical tale. I've never seen this flick but I'm sure it's gripping enough; the atmosphere must be very special - not necessarily gloomy, though. You probably learn something about yourself as you watch it. I really wonder what Hollywood's going to make of that one. Fuck, I'm scared.

The original is pretty great, but I didn't really care for the ending. I'm surprised a remake is in the works, really. It's intelligent, paced like a glacier and deadly serious (maybe even a bit pretentious), but it's definitely compelling and well worth a look.

A mix of typically French drama and ultra gory Hollywood zombie horror would be cool. No matter what - they have to use their brains!

Sounds wonderful! Whether it be the original or the remake, the storyline is original so I'm looking forward to seeing either incarnation. Is the French version available with English subtitles?

The original was released by Wellspring on DVD here in the US back in 2005, I think. I rented it at Blockbuster when it first came out, and Netflix probably has it as well.

Sweet Jeebus! Some movies just don't need to be remade. "They Came Back" was one of the most painfully boring movies I've ever seen!! I'd rather watch the Prom Night and Wicker Man (and Amityville Horror, and Black Christmas, and Hills Have Eyes II) remakes than suffer through this...
