Update: Schlock Around the Clock reports it will be a quasi-sequel, Movieset reports there will be underwater zombies, while STYD adds that it will take place on an island! Exciting! We learned of some very interesting info this morning that we've been trying to confirm for about a week now. What we have confirmed is that George A. Romero is currently in Toronto, Ontario shooting a new zombie movie, only it's NOT a sequel to DIARY OF THE DEAD like originally announced. No word yet on what exactly it is, but we're doing some more digging in hopes of finding out more. Something we did discover is that Alan Van Sprang is starring in the film, which reunites him with Romero for the third time (Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead). He also starred in Saw III for Lionsgate.
"What is he doing? Why does he keep returning to this genre?" ... "Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what he used to do. Making movies was an important thing in his life."
Could this be a continuation of Land of the Dead? I'm a huge Romero fan so I can't wait to read new details as they come in. I'm kinda hoping that this is a finale of sorts for George's zombie world. Not that I would complain if he continued making more zombie films. I'm a huge zombie film fan but I wanna see George try something else. He's proven he can make non zombie films such as Martin, Monkey Shines, The Crazies, etc and do a damn fine job at it. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
what if this is the sequel to the Dawn of the Dead remake? i know it's a hell of a long shot, but the remake DID end with the survivors landing on an island... just saying.
I can't believe everyone is bashing this movie so much already. Romero is a legend. We should be glad he's still alive and making new movies, even if they aren't as good as his classics. While Land and Diary weren't great, they are still decent flicks that are better than a lot of garbage coming out these days.
You know, I'm excited about this. As I've posted on my blog, could this be the follow up to Land of the Dead that George has been talking about before? Pure speculation on my part, but that would be absolutely fantastic.
I could have been in this movie!!!
They were doing a casting call for Zombies this mourning, but I had to work, I am so kicking myself for missing the chance.
I'm sure they would have picked me to becuase I'm a tall bulky dude with long dark hair, perfect zombie!
If I could go back in time I tell ya.
I wonder if it'll be something non-zombie related? I'd be more interested if was something different for Romero. As far as I'm concerned, he has lost his touch when it comes to zombies.
Oh great, Romero is making his own "House of the Dead"... oh well, I'll wait for reviews on this one. Hopefully Romero will pull through, I still think the guy himself is awesome even if his films are beginning to get stale.
Hope he drops the first-person view this time. Very few films actually pull it off and good ol' George is not one of them. Hope he does the underwater stuff right too. World War Z will probably be the best zombie in recent memory (when it eventually arrives) but hopefully Romero can produce something interesting in the meanwhile.
Man, I loved Diary Of The Dead. The great thing about Romero's zombie movies is how timely they are in what they're really talking about, and I really dig its critique of video culture. I can't wait to see what he'll take on next!
And dude, if he's involved in the film adaptation of WWZ I will be beside myself with glee.
What he is doing is setting up filming at Nuit Blanche in Toronto. The yearly all night festival of art exhibits around the city is doin something strange this year. "In the spirit of Diary of the Dead, people are encourageed to dress in their best zombie get-up and walk down the street being filmed by FAKE cameras". I call BS. George just doesn't want to pay for extras.
I can't wait for this film. I loved Diary and Land. Those films were chock full of political substance and great zombie gore. For anyone who remembers, that was the same recipe for Night, Dawn, and Day. I can't stand all the people who bash those films because it doesn't live up to some ridiculous expectation that they brought with them when they watched the films. I say kudos to George, and I hope he makes the film HE wants to make, and not worry about the petulant little crybaby fanboys and girls who poo-pooh an artist for daring to have a vision that they don't get.
G.I. Dan your lame, Diary of the dead was Great!!! It had great dialog, camera angles, and the plot line was good. it was a good way to put the audience in the characters shoes. I recommend it! Can't wait for the next one. I want to direct films myself, so i take everything in when i watch a film.
I so hope this isn't shot in the same cheap camcorder, puke-inducing, first-person style as Diary. Diary was the least effective of all Romero's zombie flicks IMHO, so I hope this one is a return to form.
I still can't believe how many horror lovers take Romero for granted. I hope he makes a new zombie movie every year. It took him almost 20 years to return to zombies after "Day" and now I'll take anything I can get.
So what if he has basically admitted that zombies are his thing - it's what he does best. Remember how the "Blair Witch" makers wanted to expand their horizons and make other types of films? Where are they now?
Romero is an excellent director. Diary of the dead was filmed the best way possible, if filmed any other way it wouldn't have given the audience the look and feel of what he was trying to do. How do you think there going to film the book by Max Brooks, "World War Z" all the stores are told from the characters point of view.
No matter how many Apocalyptic, End of the World, Zombie movies George Romero Makes, they will always Rock! I hear all this bashing on Diary of the Dead and on Land of the Dead, has everyone lost there minds!!Those are definitely classic simply because they come from the mind of George Romero!
I agree that We are lucky that a classic horror film maker like George Romero is still alive and still making classic style zombie films. I also agree that they are way better than any of the other crap you see these days, Oh! and another thing, the only REMAKE of all the George Romero Dead films that was done well, tastefully, and the way it should have been done, was the remake of, "Night of the Living Dead" Directed by non other than Tom Savini. Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead REMAKES were garbage and should have been stopped in Pre-Production!
I to loved Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. They were filmed with the same recipes used in the first three. The only difference is Night, Dawn, and Day were done in the 60's 70's and 80's. Times were different as they are now, and George Romero uses his beliefs in politics, and society from the current times that the movies are filmed, thats all. Everyone bashing him and his newer zombies flicks should think about that.
