A huge update today on the official website for Hammer Films as they've announced their next feature film, The Wake Wood, the first horror film they've produced since 1976's THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER. Inside you'll find a very early production poster, along with details on the story, who will star and who's directing!
David Keating is directing “The Wake Wood” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Brendan McCarthy, who came up with the original story. Brendan McCarthy is producing the film along with John McDonnell through their Fantastic Films banner. Simon Oakes and Guy East are Executive Producers.
Still grieving the death of nine-year-old Alice – their only child – at the jaws of a crazed dog, vet Patrick and pharmacist Louise relocate to the remote town of Wake Wood where they learn of a pagan ritual that will allow them three more days with Alice. The couple find the idea disturbing and exciting in equal measure, but once they agree terms with Arthur, the village’s leader, a far bigger question looms – what will they do when it’s time for Alice to go back?
The cast includes Aidan Gillen (The Wire), Eva Birthistle (Middletown) and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter series, Sweeney Todd).
Principle photography commences today in County Donegal, Ireland.
As a huge Hammer fan, I can only hopev that the new leadership is committed to quality filmmaking and does nothing to lessen the Hammer name. This sounds very Pet Semetary-ish, but I"m hopeful.
The premise sounds like "Pet Semetary", the poster looks like "The Ruins". Either way, I'm looking forward to this but hope they'll return to period-piece type horror like Twins of Evil.
Hammer is such a classic studio that produced films of atmosheric genre horror that this both excites me and scares me. Plus is that it is filmed in one of the bleakest yet most beautiful places on the planet - Donegal. Negative is the cliche poster. Yet's all hope and wish for the best!
Oh yeah, someone else pointed out the correct title "To the devil a Daughter" of hammer's last film. The Devil's Daughter was the US title of Michelle Soavi's The Sect, which is great and damn hard to find on region1 DVD!
their Beyond the Rave internet movie was worth a look as well (for free at any rate) http://profile.myspace.com/beyondtherave
still doesn't feel very 'Hammer' though, if you know what i mean, but great to see them back
I auditioned for an extra role in this! they're filming a half an hour away from my house!(:
