It appears that The Thing isn't dead as Latino Review chatted with director Marc Abraham, who is producing the inevitable remake of John Carpenter's 1982 classic. "This is more of a prequel than a sequel," he tells the site. "It's going to be taking place in the same time frame." In other words, “These are the events leading up to the 1982 film.” Could this mean we finally get to find out what Norwegian research team went through? Only time will tell, but at least it sounds like this really isn't much of a remake.
I fucking know what happened at the Norweign camp cause the first movie told us.
-- nors dig up alien.
-- Alien thaws and starts kicking ass.
-- Nors start killing each other.
-- Nors blow up camp.
-- Dog runs from camp.
-- nors follow in helicopter.
What are they going to tell us that we don't know already.
If this truly IS a prequel, and it leads up the the ORIGINAL, it's not a remake, is it? I'd much prefer the prequel over a remake, though. As it was, Carpenter's The Thing was also a remake. Maybe when you remake a movie for the first time, it isn't that bad. But when you start making a remake of a remake, you're treading down sorry ass territory. Seriously, you don't need to remake a movie every 20 years.
This sounds cool if true. Revisit without remaking. The only thing that will kill it is the bad computer graphics they'll through in. Boo. PRACTICAL ONLY. GET ROB BOTTIN BACK. Have him direct the damn thing!
Hulm. I'll need to hear a lot more than that of exactly what this "prequel" involves before I'll want it to exist. I'm inclined to agree with Shitbuster, but at the same time I don't want a straight remake. So maybe a straight sequel about the rescue team that finds the remains of the camp? It worked allright as a video game. It would play a lot like a remake (since it would, like the first remake, be about people finding the aftermath of the creature and then experience it themselves)but still fit in the timeline as a sequel. Or maybe do an amazingly bleak and expensive sequel about people experiencing the creature on the mainland as it takes over the world. Like a super grotesque version of invasion of the body snatchers. Whatever happens, they need to be fucking caareful.
What the fuck does Forrest Gump have to do with anything. We're not talking about a remake here we're talking about a whole new movie which will bring to life, events which were only talked about in The Thing. We all know pretty much what happened to the Norwegian team but i'm sure there's the potential for a great story. I for one will look forward to a prequel to one of my favourite movies ever.Just get the effects right and re-create the atmosphere Carpenter had and it can only be good.Think positive thoughts people.
"but everybody just speaks Norwegian"
Evil_Flip I think you mean the actors will be mostly American and talk with a "Norwegian" accent. They wouldn't dare be THAT creative to have it in any other language than English.
Stupid idea of course, but hopefully they avoid using much CGI. The original FX was what helped to make the original so effective.
Carpenter didn't really "remake" the first movie. He went back to the original short story "Who Goes There?" and did a more faithful adaptation. FAR more faithful. This could be interesting given a decent script.
I love John Carpenter's version and when I saw that so many Carpenter movies were being remade badly...I was worried about "the Thing". At least now if its a prequel...it wont really be a remake...so I for one am a bit happier....But I really wish all this re-making crap would just stop and some more original movies would come out...then of course....someone would remake those too in 10 or 20 years....jeesh!
corinnemic, I'm aware of that. But that's also like saying the made-for-TV mini series of The Shining isn't a remake because it follow's Stephen King's original story MORE closely than Kubrick's film(which was considerably different than King's novel, especially the ending). Nonetheless, it will still be considered a remake because the original is known fondly by people.
Remake? Prequel? Whatever, I'm into it. I know there are a lot of people who'll disagree but so what. Yes more of these remakes have been bad than good but I think this one could be great.
We're in the minority DBlock. I think this could be cool too. And since they're doing it in the same time frame, I pray that they decide to keep it 80's. Meaning, if the things weren't available in the 80's, the actors wont have them here.. like cell phones and all that crap.
i agree DBlock/Zombie Hell - can't wait to see it. there's been some decent remakes of late (ie Hills Have Eyes) so here's hoping. The Thing is up there in my top 5 movies of all time so i'm just happy to see more (and hey if it sucks i can just watch Carpenter's again - it'll still be as good as it ever was)
Right on guys! I wish them the best on this endeavor.
