One franchise that appears to have been drilled in the ground is CHILD'S PLAY, which last saw Chucky on the big screen back in 2004 with the release of SEED OF CHUCKY. Nearly four years later, creator Don Mancini is hard at work penning the remake for the film (that he'll also direct), which kicked off back in 1988 with a killer who transfers his soul into the body of a Good Guy doll. We've broke a whole bunch of stories here on B-D, and today we had the chance to have a few more questions answered... like what will change in the remake, including Chucky's design. Read on for the skinny.
This afternoon Bloody Disgusting reporter BC chatted with CHILD'S PLAY creator Don Mancini who talked a bit on why he's remaking the film and not continuing with a sixth film.
"Well because the main thing is that we want to make it scary again, rather than comedic," Don Mancini tells Bloody-Disgusting. "And I think that was really the response to SEED, the fans sort of told us that they want it to be scary again. I think if we did a direct sequel to SEED OF CHUCKY, which is a horror comedy, it would be a little tougher to continue the aspects of that story which so inherently absurd."
Don Mancini tells us that what it all comes down to is making the franchise scary again, and remaking it is the best way to go.
"That the bottom line, our main mission was to make it scary again and the best way to do that would be to reboot it."
One of the main questions we have all been wondering is how much of the original will be in the remake. Mancini explains that even Chucky will get a slight reboot...
"...And it’s a remake, but there are a lot of new things in it" he explains. "None of the details of the murders in the first movie will be repeated. All of the setpieces are going to be completely brand new, and we’re going to do a slight re-design on Chucky himself, although Brad Dourif will absolutely be the voice of Chucky, and will once again play Charles Lee Ray in the flesh. And we’re giving him more to do than he did in the original movie."
This all sounds like exciting news, especially if you aren't a fan of SEED. Watch this spot for the full interview soon.
Bride Of Chucky and Seed i think are the best. I like it when a movie has the comedic sense aswell as a little scare. Tiffany should be in the remake series the whole way.
Hell yeah! I can't freakin' wait. I agree that the best way to make it scary again is to reboot it. I'm glad that they're making it new instead of having the same kills, the look of Chucky, and the screen time for Charles Lee Ray all the same. It's going to be so cool. I wonder how Chucky will look. Hopefully they can make him the scariest thing our eyes have ever seen!
This is the remake that could be beyond good. I like the idea of a new sculpt of the doll as well why not change it around? Love that Brad is going to do it again I hope they put more of him in it as a real psycho so that way when he becomes the doll its that much more freaky.
With Dourif and Mancini coming back to do this, and with their good intentions, I don't see how this can go wrong. My hopes will definitely be high for this.
This actually isn't bad news. It's not like "Child's Play" wasn't a B-movie anyway, albeit a very well-made one. Remaking it with the original creative team returning makes sense. I don't know if this will be any good (I haven't enjoyed any other of the films since the original), but I'll be open to it.
Seed was terrible but I would like to see tiffany again. The bride of chucky was a classic and it wasnt really a bad movie. It just had a sucky director
Bride's OK but Seed is damn near unwatchable... no story, just a collection of setpieces and gags. Only one of the series I couldn't be bothered to watch a 2nd time. Im glad they are starting from scratch.
Brad Dourif is the only part of the Child's Play series worth a damn. Don Mancini is a hack director, who managed to take a completely unoriginal idea and make 60 good minutes of film in a series that is 8 hours long.
I hate remakes but i wanna see this one. For one thing you can guarantee sequels, and if that's what they're going for than this is the best route. Why, well as Mancini said they got too comedic. Wow i'm looking forward to two remakes, this & F13. Hell has frozen over.
I´m actually all up for a remake. But I think Chucky is very 80´s and would´nt fit with today´s generation but we´ll see.
I saw the original last year and did´nt like it because then all movies had to be masterpieces for me haha but if I´d see it now I´m sure I´d enjoy it. I´m sad that I sold my copy though, maybe I´ll buy the 20 anniversary edition if it will have a R2 edition.
cool im glad that brad is doin more in this one than the first one...wonder if jennifer tilly would sign on at all. also wonder who theyd get to play andy.
