I know this is tacky, but whatever... I dedicate this news post to all of those who claimed we were "making up" all of the Poltergeist remake news over the past two years - this one is for you. After MGM confirmed the news we broke over two years ago - that they were planning a remake of Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper's POLTERGEIST - it was revealed that Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Boogeyman, The Birds) would be penning the remake. Then last week we exclusively revealed that Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) was in heavy talks to helm the film, which was confirmed this evening, giving us bragging rights for infinity. More on this soon, until then talk among yourselves and tell us what you think they should do.
hahaahah they actually gave you credit in the article, amazing. Clint over at moviehole must be beside him self since he talked about those big trades never giving credit to the internet sites who break the news first, they must finally get the picture. i always liked THR better then Variety anyways
Well he has potential! If there´s a good director(mostly arthouse or artistic) then the movie might as well be good if not great but if they get a crappy music video director and try to turn this into a cheap teenypooper MTV flick then this could be horrible.
I really like the original, it´s a great horror movie and always manages to scare me and capture with it´s amazing atmosphere but it has not aged very well especially the ending.
This is a 50/50, I´ll stay tuned.
House of Sand and Fog was good by the way!
u gotta be shittig me......like i said NOOO NEED TO REMAKE THIS. i hope everyone dies on this set. well going to be toned down for the stupid tweenies......i guess the peitition didnt work. who in the right mind will play tangena, steven, robbie, carolann, diane, (robbies and carolannes sister i cant think of her name). i hope everyone dies on that set! poltgeriest curse!@ this is bull shit. talk bout disrespectint tobe hopper, and stephen spielberg a shot in the mouth. idiots.......
billbeast u never seen the first one?!?! uhhh how old are you?????? do u even like scasry movies?!? this is a classic the stupid assr remake wont ever live up to the original.
Im so fucking depressed now, again, after reading this . Still can't believe this perfect, classic , timeless horror is being remade. Another sad day for Horror fans everywhere. MGM, hang your head in shame!!!

I think the writers, confirmed director, producers and everyone involved with this remake, reboot, reimagining whatever the fuck they want to call it are brainless idiots!! I'm pretty sure between them all they do not have not one iota of talent on par with SPEILBERG, TOBE HOOPER, THE ENTIRE CAST, JERRRY GOLDSMITH (for his fantastic score), ILM(for the great effects) I could go on and on and on....
It makes me quite sad that this really good horror film is going to be remade. I wish that these Hollywood studios would get their collective heads out of theirs asses and actually make an effort to search out good original horror screenplays. Such a thing does exist but these execs seem to be taking the easy way out.
AHHHHHH! FUCK NO! FUCK REMAKES! FUCK HOLLYWOOD! FUCK SNOWDEN AND WHITE!!!! sign the petition against the movie! just google poltergeist remake petition and it's the second link.
i normally don't bitch about remakes, but this is completely unnecessary. The first poltergeist film is fantastic and does not need an update. I'm just confused as to why they've picked movies that are still scary as hell to remake. Why not pick movies that were a good idea in the first place, but executed poorly. This is just a bad idea.
"It makes me quite sad that this really good horror film is going to be remade."
You will still have your original movie. If you don't like the idea of it being remade, don't go see it, stay home, and watch the original instead.
horrorchick81; I like your style. Keep that shit up. And fuck all these remakes anyway. Like I always say; that's fine if they want to shove remakes at us, but what pisses me off is that the highly rated horror movies that play at film fests get fucking bumped and pushed back all the time. The hardcore horror fans should get their films just like the remake crowd gets their's - that's all I'm saying.
By the way; who the fuck will say "They're Here..."? They better get Dakota Fanning or Abigale Breslin to say that shit. Hey, that's a classic line in movie cinema history. You can't just get some rugrat to belt that out.
Vadim Perelman is a very talented director, so there is some hope for this. However, "Poltergeist" (the original anyway) is a classic and remaking one is a challenge I wouldn't want to be faced with. I could seriously do without a remake of this, the original still holds up to this day and I think we should just let it be. But alas, studios know there's money to be had.
Hahahaha! What the Hell? Fuck Dakota Fanning! I mean, this isn't exactly Abigail Breslin's thing, but I prefer ANYONE over Dakota Fanning! Breslin is everything that Fanning isn't! I'll give you one guess which of the two is gonna outlive the other in the movie business!
I didn't realize my Dakota Fanning comment would spark such controversy. But you can't have fucking Miley Cirus saying "They're Here...". and I think that little girl from the original passed away didn't she. So someone good should replace her out of respect. Ah screw it - throw that younger Lohan bitch in there for all I care.
Good, you know what happens when a director not technically from a certain genre does a film? It turns out fucking awesome! Look at the batman franchise I think to breathe new life into the horror genre it needs directors who are not in that genre for fresher takes on it I think this will be good.
I agree with you to a point Irish Mic. Yes, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight blew away all three of Tim Burton's versions of Batman. And John Landis took a break from comedies like Animal House and Kentucky Fried Movie to give us the great American Werewolf in London. But this is different. Batman had lots of room for improvement from Burton's version. Poltergeist is pretty much fucking perfect and should be left alone. It would be like remaking Evil Dead of Frightnight or something like that.
why is everyone so pissed about this, i mean yes it will prolly suck but how does that at all detract from the greatness of the original, and for ppl bitchin bout hollywood only do remakes and are only interested in money, i mean it is a business, and im yet to see any of you present a good idea that could legitimately be made into a movie, and movies and books have been around forever i mean how many competely new and fresh ideas that would actually make sense are left out there eh?
Clot-Sandwich; you're right. My mistake. But I still think this whole Poltergeist remake idea fucking blows. And it was Heather O'Rourke who played the little girl in the originals who passed away at the age of 12. And "They're Here..." is a classic movie line like "We're going to need a bigger boat" and "I believe you have my stapler". That's some big shoes to fill. Not to mention that Vadim Perelman is no Tobe Hooper and whoever will write the story probably ain't no Steven Speilberg. But fuck it. When is Black Devil Doll hitting dvd?
It's because more shit like remakes of ONE MISSED CALL and PROM NIGHT are released in the field of horror than good stuff like gems such as MANDY LANE and [REC]. They always get shoved back indefinitely, but we always seem to get another SAW movie(?)
Here's a list of movies that should be remade because they could be improved, here ya go Hollywood!
Mardi Gras Massacre, Lifeboat, Death Weekend, April Fool's Day (that piece of shit "in name only" remake doesn't count), Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Wasp Woman, The Neptune Factor, etc.
It's pure laziness and greed when movies like THE BIRDS and SUSPIRIA (and this movie) start getting lined up to be remade.
stop going to remakes and they will all bomb like DISASTER MOVIE did last weekend, if spoof movies like that stop being made, horror remakes will stop drastically if they begin to bomb every weekend.
thedescent08: I couldn't agree more. Why doesn't Hollywood remake movies that could have been better instead of ones that were great. How many times have you seen a great movie concept that got fucked up by bad acting an/or bad effects? And yes; FUCK THE PROM NIGHT REMAKE!!!!!!
'If you don't like the idea of it being remade, don't go see it, stay home, and watch the original instead.' That's exactly what I plan to do, but I will respond negatively to every single pointless remake that keeps on being pumped out by brainless execs. I care about the horror genre and I will make my opinion known very loud and clear on the subject.
Hmmm... very iffy. I don't like the writers, but I think Vadim Perelman did an amazing job with House of Sand and Fog and The Life Before Her Eyes. We'll just have to wait and see.
Once again, Dakota fanning is 10 years past the mark to play Carol Ann, let it go! Secondly, horrorchick, wishing death on people? How old are like you idk, i mean like omg! The only thing we have in common is our reservations on this remake. You will go see it or rent it and you know it. How else can you cry about it intelligently? By the way, Robbie and Carol Ann's sister was Dana. You being "such the fan" should know that. If you have questions, try Google! A world of info at your fingertips. Stop hating, don't like it? Save your $10. I hope your "petition" is as real as your "curses." Really you are ridiculous. Simple and ridiculous.
This site is the Enemy to horror. They are dry jerking themselves over the fact that they knew about this. And they are so happy about it too. Fuck this site. It's dead too me.
So happy the nightmare remake fell on it's face. Thats the last good news this site spoke up on. But they were so ready to dry jerk over it if it happened. Fuck I'm getting old. I hate you teenagers and your fucking remakes. You don't have anything original to grow up on. You are not horror. Your all posers!
Its kind of silly to keep bringing up how you "broke" this 2 years ago but nobody believed you . . The remake craze is huge, it was 50/50 on being remade no matter what, like all popular horror movies. The story you "broke" could have very well been bullshit, even now. But taking a page from this site's book, I'm gonna "break the news" about a new Dracula movie. Yep, you heard it here first. There WILL be a new Dracula movie, somewhere down the line. You heard it here first.
I welcome the news that a good director is giving horror a chance, the way Håfström and von Trier have done. I laugh all the louder at the fact that there is an attempt to claim that the story was broken 2 years ago. Nothing but a blatant guess or pathetic rumour was broken 2 years ago. To bring that up as anything but an amusing anecdote is poor. Very very poor.
I'm actually excited for this. Not because it's a remake, but because I thought "The House of Sand and Fog" was a brilliant movie, it was so dark some might consider it a horror film. I'm curious to see what the director does with it.
Yeah Dakota Fanning??? I think not. For one, SHE'S TOO FUCKING OLD NOW. If anyone, get her younger sister that kinda looks like her, and I'm sure is probably just as good a young actress. I've been watching horror movies since I was like 4 or 5 and I love them to death. I'm 33 now and have seen countless remakes of originals... Some of which sucked in the 70's, but, some were classics and should NEVER be remade. I loved the original Poltergeist and think it really shouldn't be remade. Hollywood, in general, really needs to start coming up with original ideas and not sucking off of someone else's neck for a change. For instance... Fright Night? A classic, but, they're fucking that into the ground (remake that takes place at a fucking carnival with vampires) and it doesn't even follow the same premise as the original. The original had to do with a vampire that moved in next door to a teenager, you fucking moronic writers... YOU HEAR ME YET... If you remake a film... REMAKE IT THE RIGHT FUCKING WAY! God I hope you idiot writers read this shit. You're gonna piss off alot of fans if you don't stay true to the source material. Thanks and have a lovely day.
another horror classic getting the remake virus i knew when freddy was been remade no horror is safe the original poltergiest was brilliant and i urge evryone who hasnt seen it(where have u been!!!????)to do so before this remake trash gets released
I wonder if the child-eating tree will be in the re-make. I laugh my ass off at that part every time I watch Poltergeist. That movie is a fuckin' horror gem that hasn't lost it's shine. JoBeth Williams was pretty smokin' in that flick also. "Cross-over children, all are welcome"----Poltergeist.
I know I will get flack for saying this and I have never been a big supporter of the "Remake". But I have always felt that Poltergeist could have been better. The first one had some story holes and I would like to see what could be done? please dont yell at me too much...its just my opinion
Inga, you are a brave girl. LOL. You may have a point with those empty story holes. Since this is such a huge debate I think I may need to watch the movie again. It's been a while. Be easy on Inga guys!
being a poltergeist junkie im kinda bummed about this. the first one is my all time favorite horror movie. its the first one i ever saw as a kid and scared me retarded. ive always wanted another movie as good as the first one. a remake is just dumb. ittl probably be geared toward the MTV babies and thus suck.nothing is sacred in hollywood so im not surprised they are really going to do it.
I saw Poltergeist in the theater in '82...the scene where 'ol boy claws the skin off his face in the mirror scared the shit out of me so bad, I had to beg my aunt who took me, to leave.
This is tragic, but not surprising news.
This looks toooo lame to me.
At least Tobe Hooper had some serious horror creds coming into directing Poltergeist the first. Wots Perelman done that makes him worthy to do the remake? He's probably cheap.
Dude poltergeist is now going to be the most disturbing saddest remake ever made. WHY you ask. Well if you look at his other films there pretty fucking sad and disturbing. House put me in tears and shock for a week something that is hard to do with me. The life before her eyes was a hard movie to watch and one you can't see again. So i say fuck yeah.
I'm gonna have to agree with flesheater there. This is another fine example of a studio rehashing an older movie for the sole purpose of making a quick buck. Anyone else tearing their hair out yet?
As long as movies like The Mist keep coming out we'll still have good original horror. And don't give me that "It was based off of a short story" bullshit because nearly every Clive Barker movie (ie Midnight Meat Train) was based off of one too.

Hey all of you bitching assholes! If you dont like remakes then dont GO FUCKING SEE THEM!!!! Every time a remake is green lit, every little greasepunk born in 85 comes in every horror forum on the net to start bitching! STOP IT GOD DAMN IT!!! Example: TCM Remake....One of the best horror films ive seen for years....Had the same atmospher and gritty feeling as the original...Only way much better in every technical aspect. And it did very good at the box office...PEOPLE LIKED IT! PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD LIKE THESE REMAKES. Is it a "movement" against remakes these days?? Do you think your "one of a kind" if you hate remakes? A grew up with all the fantastic horror films like TCM,Halloween,Friday 13th..jaws,King Kong...I LOVE THEM....A remake does not RUIN the original...its just a new way to explore an already great movie. The classics will always be classics....And YES...there are some bad remakes (Prom Night)...but dont piss all over everything before you even see the final product!
Pardon my french....English is not my native tounge
Pink; there's no need to say "pardon my French", we all fucking swear here. My personal gripe with remakes is not that they are bad (in fact some have been quite good), it just seems that remakes get pumped out and dumped into theaters very quickly where the cool movies that play at horror film fests that we here good things about get endless delays in release dates. It's like the remake crowd gets there movies and the rest of us get dicked around. At least that's where I'm coming from on this issue.
It's the same old security financial thing. If a movie does good the first time around the remake will do good because it is the same movie. Creativity gets killed because the finance behind many of these blodckbusters demand a guarrantee that the film must do good in the box office. New films are always a gamble. As far as i'm concerned these people that delay indie flicks because they think they will not do good are a bunch of losers because they don't take risks. Remakes do good but never they will be like the originals. Halloween and Texas Chainsaw massacre remakes did allright but they will never be bettor than the real McKoys.
Man, i am sick of all you dudes tolerating this remake shit - This movie will be a piece of shit compared to the original - PERIOD. Halloween, TCM - and soon Friday the 13th and Nightmare remakes...they all suck or will suck and as a horror fan i am outraged by the audacity of these studios to try and capitalize on the good name of movies that had a lot more going for them than any one can seem to conjure up these days - originality. Poltergeist is a classic - top pedigree directing, writing, acting & scoring - it CANNOT be topped no matter who tries...and NOBODY should try. Fuckheads.
Well, I am just wondering when the masses will demand an ORIGINAL movie again. A remake here and there is cool but it is getting absolutely stupid. I am of the mind that this movie does NOT need to be remade. Ill check it out depending on how the advertising goes but I wont pay to check it out if you get my drift. These days I tend to download horror remakes instead of pay to go see them, I hope many more will do the same and send a message. It is not completely hollywood's fault though. The FCC has tightened their grip so damn much the only thing they pass through these days are watered down remakes of truly frightening original movies. Independant film is where horror lives now.
We need to get pissed and call for original movies, if not then we will be sitting through this remake shit for the next 50 years. And one final note, I will puke the day news comes about for an exorcist remake. I know its just a matter of time before they fuck that one up.
aww FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK NOOOOOOOOOOO!
wth. you cant remake that movie. its a fucking classic! its like remaking gone with the wind! wtffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Poltergeist (remake)
STARRING: DIRECTOR: WRITER: Juliet Snowden and Stiles White
