This morning we came across two new stills from John Hillcoat's adaptation of The Road, which stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Robert Duvall. The story centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. The film opens in limited theaters November 14th before expanding into more.
Other than "The Road", the only other film I'm more excited for this year is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". This is looking great, I'm in love with the novel and it looks like Hillcoat is delivering a movie of equal magnitude--or so we can hope.
Some things just seem too good to be true. I mean a great cast like this based on a great book. You guys have to admit; most of the really great horror movies have had lower budgets with lesser known actor and actresses. Whenever they put a big name in a horror flick they usually tone down the horror aspect. Hopefully, I am wrong on this one.
@ coldblood. Well, "The Road" isn't necessarily a horror novel--it's so much more. It is powerful, provocative, disturbing, and incredibly dark, but like "The Silence of the Lambs" or "Rosemary's Baby" or "Se7en" there's much more to it than the horror elements. It is very much a human drama, maybe even more so than a horror experience. It is these elements that make it as powerful and epic as it is. As far as the film being any good, check out Hillcoat's "The Proposition". Once you do, any lack of faith you have in this film will be diminished--it's a great, albeit violent, film with great performances by Guy Pierce and the rest of the cast. Plus, Viggo and Theron have had their share of violent and dark films in their resume-- Viggo has "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises (they don't get darker than that) and Theron has "Monster". I seriously can't wait.
@EscapeToTheWoods: What's your beef with Mortensen and Theron? They're two of todays biggest talents and they're not afraid to make offbeat, non-mainstream cinema. Mortensen proved that through his Cronenberg efforts and Theron proved it through works like "In the Valley of Elah" and "Monster".
TheDeadMayTasteBad; OK, you have got me on this one. At least I can admit when I am wrong. But on our other discussion; Lullaby is still a shitty name for a horror movie.
I was hoping this was based on the Family Guy episode - you know the one, with Randy Newman and the Hostess Twinkies factory. That would be freakin' sweet!
omg another post-apocalyptic cannibal flick. AS IF, how many inbread cannibal movies can you fucking make? I'm so tired of this kinda film it's been over done weather it's the post-apocalyptic thing or the cannibals..yawn. I'd rather watch reruns of HANNA MONTANA!
